We're big Groundhogs fans here at spitzsounds, but it took some years before we found a decent copy of The Two Sides of Tony (TS) McPhee. The great thing here is that the solo project isn't a secret bid for solo stardom, or a vanity breakaway from the Groundhogs. This is a genuine effort by the late Tony McPhee to take musical risks that wouldn't have made sense within the band. Side A is a mostly acoustically driven slab of Tony's signature raucous slide guitar and bellowing. But Side B is the big splash: 'The Hunt' is one long electronic studio jam, with voice effects and tinkering in an almost Krautrocky vein. It's a total thrill. Woof woof!! King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Gumboot Soup (2017) Had a record shopping trip kind of weekend in town just gone and admittedly tried to eye out on King Gizzard each time. Managed to get two more for the collection and this one I become more and more fond of no matter how popular (or not so popular) amongst King Gizzard fans. Some of their tunes hinted at heavier material to come whereas "Muddy Water" has such a Jethro Tull vibe that it's hard not to love. On other hand, it's understandable how this one gets easily overlooked given this was one of the five releases of 2017. Yes vs. Aphrodite's Child! It's #vinylbattlewednesday hosted by @vinylwife It's a double battle today: two titanic prog rock albums and two sets of pressings: Australian (above) and Japanese (below). Between the albums, Side A's 'Close to the Edge' is my favourite single prog track: it is so uplifting and divine that it makes me want to become a better dog. Yes' fifth album also feels like the zenith of classic prog. It has all the big moves made in the most complete way. 666 is a different beast. Messier in execution, rambling in construction, but filled with ideas that would effectively mutatute into electronica, industrial, indie rock, post-punk, alt folk - the list goes on. It's the less satisfying album, but it's genuinely progressive, in the sense of reaching toward far away musical futures. I still cannot believe what I hear on Side D. And for the pressings: I don't know the science, but these Japanese versions are to the Australians what steaks are to kibbles. I think the pressings were better originally, and they were much better looked after. A surprise commercial splash at the time, the album mixes some colourful rock numbers in a Tropicália vein (check out the bass on 'Sangue Latino') with two particularly haunting folk tracks: 'O Patrão Nosso De Cada Dia' and 'El Rey'. The contrast between the bouncy rock jams and careful song craft is incredibly effective - never a dull moment! Satori | Flower Travellin' Band, 1971 (Atlantic, JPN, '71) Rollin' over for one of my favourites: Satori 🤘 For fans of Black Sabbath. But also Can. And Hendrix. Oh, and anyone into post-punk... and ... and .... The songwriting on this album didn't pull me in the first time. It's not really catchy, some of the melodies have that Zappa-ish chromaticism, and the vocals are rarely melodic. But the total effect of this guitar driven opus is undeniable: it churns up big riffs and big solos with a trembling, brooding power. Every part is good, but in particular, Part 5 of Satori points to the future of countless metal subgenres - it's utterly uncanny. After a few spins, I now understand why Julian Cope picked this as his favourite Japanese psych rock album. I'm floored. La Fresa Acida - "Exitos Con La Fresa Acida" (1972) Here's a great album by Mexico City's La Fresa Acida! This album is a compilation of some of their "hits" which are actually covers of hits from the 6os/70s, songs like "(I'll Be) Never alone," "Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon" and "How Do You Do?" The band was formed in 1969 by Germán Gonzales, former trumpet player for Los Boppers, together with Javier Burciaga (former lead singer for Los Zignos) they would release 5 albums between 1970-74, they would mainly do covers of international hits but in a more psychedelic/folk rock style, they would also sing in both in English and Spanish. This album has an A side track of 16 minutes and 16 seconds, consisting of a multi-phased immersive, generally dreamy psychedelic rock interspersed with quotes from Macbeth. There’s some Macbeth, field recordings, knives and toads, strings, and shallow dives into other musical styles. The result is a novel, relaxing and heady listening experience. Split | The Groundhogs, 1971 (United Artists, US, '71) Possibly the best Groundhogs album ❤️ The strength of the Groundhogs was the volatile mix between acoustic and clean channel guitar rhythms, on the one hand, and explosive rock riffs with wah wah psych-outs, on the other. Underneath all this, propulsive bass lines and drums that, despite many personnel changes, always ensured top notch dynamics across Groundhogs albums. Split is the sweet spot in the discography. Huge, catchy riffs driving Split Pts 1 and 2 on Side A and the divine 'Cherry Red' on Side B (the closest the band comes to Budgie). Next to that, guitar freakouts scattered across both sides, all wrapped up by a closing masterclass in electric blues, 'Groundhog'. The atmosphere throughout is more delirious than any other Groundhogs: they are bursting with ideas, every track points toward 3 or 4 other song ideas. Dashiell Hedayat – Obsolete. Major props for my homie @itsounjian for hooking me up with this very cool deep cut. Dashiell Hedayat (real name is Daniel Théron) is a French musician/author, and I think this is his only record. This jam dates from 1971 and was released on Shandar Records. They musicians are basically from the band Gong and this record features some of Daevid Allen’s shredding guitar work. If you’ve heard Daevid Allen’s album Banana Moon or Gong’s Camembert Electrique (also both 1971) then you are going to want to check this record out. Psych Rock/Krautrock/Jazz are the genres I’d put this in. Dashiell Hedayat lays down some cool spoken word throughout.
