“Praying Honestly” “Are you honest with God when you pray? Lots of people struggle with being completely honest with Him. Instead, they pick and choose the things they pray about. They hide certain sins and confess others that aren’t as embarrassing. But Scripture says that we don’t need to clean up our life before we come to God. God is the one who created us, and He knows everything about us. So there is nothing that we can hide from Him. He already knows the innermost parts of our thoughts and desires. The writer of Psalm 139 prays for God to search his heart and mind, and to bring up anything that he might be unaware of that is hiding beneath the surface. This is a prayer that we’re all invited to pray. We cannot be healed from the things we try to hide. In order to experience the grace and mercy of God, we must bring everything to Him. When He searches us and brings things to mind, He’s inviting us to humbly confess them to Him. This prayer in Psalm 139 is an open and honest plea for God to continue to purify and sanctify our hearts. God can handle the heaviest parts of us, and He is not surprised by what happens in our thoughts. Honesty before God is the only way we can grow into the people He wants us to be. We cannot grow in our spiritual life by hiding secrets or guarding our thoughts from God. So take a moment today to make Psalm 139 your prayer. Takeaways: 1. God knows my heart better than I do. I don't know what I don't know, I can't see what I am blind to, and I can't overcome what I don't know needs overcoming. This prayer helps bring anything to light that may be hidden so that we can be freed through repentance and the forgiveness of God from anything keeping us from experiencing true freedom in Christ. 2. God is the judge of us, not our hearts. Don't get it twisted and don't allow your heart to judge yourself, others or the world; leave that to our Maker who is qualified to do so. King David, Israel’s most beloved king, closed his beautiful psalm the same way he opened it, but this time, he was asking God, inviting God, to search him and to know his heart. David also asked God to try or to test him and to reveal if there were any wicked way in him. It is one thing to acknowledge that God created us and knows everything about us, as David did earlier in this psalm, but it is another thing to ask Him to examine us, to test us, and identify any wickedness in our lives. The intent of asking God to do this was for God to lead David in the way everlasting. What a different state our world would be in if each one of us did this! Sadly, a large percentage of people in the world do not believe in the one true God, the God that sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to offer salvation from our sins to all who believe in Him and put their trust in Him and in Him alone for their salvation. A few weeks ago, I decided to pray the same prayer David prayed. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. ~Psalms 139:23-24, NLT The great I am, the Lover of my Soul, my faithful Shepherd is He. And, mercifully, tenderly and often painfully, He is revealing to me ... ME. The real me. Not my reputation, but my character. Not who I think I am, but who I really am. And... it hasn't been pretty. But, it's exactly what I needed. Unless we come face to face with real us, we will never come face to face with our need for a Saviour. The closer I get to God, the more I realize just how wretched I am. The more I learn of His spotless character, the more I discover the sinfulness and filthiness of my own. The deeper I fall in love with my Savior, the more I humbly bow before my God and thank Him for the gift of Jesus, the gift of salvation, the gift of redemption, the gift of re-creation. Slowly, but surely, one revelation at a time, God is remaking me into His image. At times it is painful, embarrassing and down right humiliating, not to mention depressing, but I am learning to let God search me and try me, and then, to miraculously change me. Nope! Upon Godly inspection, I am definitely not who I thought I was. But, hallelujah, thanks to Godly sanctification, I am not who I used to be either. Yesterday was not a day I have ever looked forward to. Having a medical condition that is dependent on others not messing things up is one of the most aggravating things in life. There aren’t many situations that test my patience or upset me but my health, our children, and money are definitely areas I need to work on. Deep down I know there is something inside of me that is triggered when these areas of life are messed with and they are issues established a long time ago. When I pray, I don’t pray about them. I pray for safety, for others…but not the internal turmoil I experience daily. Todays devotion hit me like a brick wall. Psalms 139:23-24, Search me God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. I have not been honest with God. I have not dealt with the underlying cause of my anxiousness when it comes to my health, our children, or money. I know I am not able to work through these areas of anxiousness without being honest. A prayer I wrote for anyone who can’t find the right words to pray because the noise is too distracting. Pray this prayer: Father God, Teach me to discern your voice and shut out all the other noise. The distractions are constant and the discouragement is everywhere. Shower me with hope and only vision to see you. The earthly noise is loud but you are louder. The earthy chaos is big but you are bigger. The earthly destruction is mighty but you are mightier. Help me remember Luke 18:27, when Jesus said “what is impossible for man is possible with God.” Keep my eyes fixed on you and guide me in your holy path always. For whatever Satan wants to destroy around us, I know your plan is better and will bring ultimate redemption. Send your angels to protect us. Keep my eyes open and my head clear. You are almighty, you are merciful, you are all-knowing and with all that, may peace overtake any anxiety. Thank you God for never leaving me and for always loving me. We learn from our mistakes (Whole blurb - cause Hope likes it that way 😉) My kids all like to cook. When they were younger it was a highly supervised endevour. Now as they get older it requires that I am close at hand but NOT interfering. I listen and interject when I hear statements like, “it calls for a 1/4 cup of salt.” No. Never, in any recipe, except perhaps a brine do you eve use that much salt. Or my son will ask, “What colour is this?” when cooking ground beef (he’s colour-blind). I told my husband the other day that most times it is still easier and faster to do things myself. But, then they wouldn’t learn. He laughed and said, “Yeah, like me I had to learn how to cook after I left home.” I explained to him that what he did was keep himself alive, it couldn’t be described as cooking. I’m not a very nice wife! When faced with my daily struggles there are many times that I wish God would just reach down and do it for me. It would be easier for both of us.
