* 책상을 정리하다가 오랜만에 열어본 필통 안에 새 연필들이 있었다. 무언가를 적거나 그리고 싶은 마음은 없었지만 커터 칼을 찾아 이곳저곳을 뒤적거리기 시작했다. 단순히 시간을 깎으며 그저 그런 날로 하루를 정리하고 싶었을지도 모르겠다. 결국 커터 칼은 발견했지만 칼날을 찾지 못했다. 부엌에 있던 식칼을 잠깐 바라봤지만 포기하고 다시 책상 앞에 앉았다. 생각해 보면 어린아이가 칼을 다루는 것은 미숙하고 위험할 수 있지만, 막상 어른의 손에 쥐어진다 해도 모든 어른이 연필을 예쁘고 정교하게 깎지는 못한다. 특히 이 시대에는 더욱 그렇다고 느껴지지만 동시에 그게 무슨 의미가 있는지 질문할 수 있는 시대이기도 하다. 그래도 왜인지 연필깎이에는 의존하고 싶지 않을 때가 있다. 결과가 모나더라도 때로는 직접 칼을 쥐고 연필을 깎아보고 싶을 때가 있는 법이다. 이튿날 집에 돌아오는 길에 문구점에서 칼날 심을 구매했다. 하지만 이날도 딱히 연필을 사용할만 곳은 없었기에 느긋하게 연필을 깎으며 연필밥이 밀려나가다 떨어지는 것을 감상했는데 고된 하루였는지 비관적이 생각이 들기도 했다. 사람은 한 사건을 이겨내고 성장한다고 하지만 실은 그로 인해 깎여나가는 것은 아닐까. 그저 연필처럼 총량이 정해져있지 않나. 오랜 세월을 보낸 건 아니지만 여러 사건을 지나치면서 경화되는 느낌이 아니라 한 사건이 다시 찾아오면 이전보다 이겨낼 힘이 줄어든 느낌이다. 정확히는 요령껏 넘기고 나면 이후에 찾아드는 피로를 이겨내기가 힘들다. 긴 여생을 적어가는 것이 연필이라면 보이지 않는 곳에 금이 생긴 상태는 아닐까. 그래도 이런 날만 있으리라는 법은 없다. 누군가의 작업대에 놓인 연필, 닳고 닳은 몽당연필 같은 것들을 볼 때 느껴지는 감동 같은 것들이 있다. 속은 모르겠으나 지나간 세월을 가늠할 수 있기에 오히려 누군가에게 안위를 가져다주기도 한다. 연필은 모난 모양일 수 있으나 정성스레 깎아가는 모습만큼은 모나지 않다. 지금까지 자신도 모르는 사이에 흘려버린 연필밥들이 때로는 아름다워 보이는 순간들도 있을 것이다.

A far uccidere Impastato è il capo indiscusso di Cosa Nostra negli anni Settanta, Gaetano Badalamenti, bersaglio preferito delle trasmissioni della Radio libera che Peppino ha fondato a Cinisi, dove passa l’intera giornata e l’intera notte dell’8 maggio 1978. La sera successiva però, Peppino non si trova più. Gli amici si mettono a cercarlo. A casa non sanno niente di lui. E’ successo, l’irreparabile: Peppino Impastato è stato ucciso, dilaniato da una bomba piazzata sulla ferrovia Palermo-Trapani I familiari e gli amici non hanno dubbi, ad uccidere Peppino è stato Gaetano Badalamenti, eppure le indagini prendono tutt’altra direzione; si ipotizza il suicidio oppure che il giovane sia morto saltando per aria mentre preparava un attentato dinamitardo. Impastato è un terrorista o un suicida; questo è l’ultimo oltraggio della mafia contro il giovane che ha osato sfidarla. Nessuna indagine viene fatta sull’esplosivo, mentre vengono portati in caserma e interrogati i suoi più cari amici. La scena del crimine viene alterata: le prove, gli occhiali, le chiavi di Peppino Impastato, due pietre insanguinate sul luogo della morte, scompaiono nel nulla. Al funerale di Peppino Impastato si presenta spontaneamente una folla di giovani, accorsi da tutta la Sicilia, ma la gente di Cinisi non si presenta, e lascia la famiglia sola.
