Seal of Manila found on different numismatic pieces. From left to right: (1) 1834 Proclamation medal of Queen Ysabel II; (2) 1890 Escuela Municipal De Manila Medal; (3) 1861 Manila Mint Commemorative medal; and (4) Sociedad de Tiro De Manila Shooting medal late 19th century. Always a thrill seeing this seal, though there have been ongoing debates or discussions on what is really the animal underneath the castle… #philippines #philippineshistory #philippines🇵🇭 #philippinenumismatics #medals #1834 #1861 #seal #manila #queenisabel #manilamint #medal #silver #escuela #ateneo #admu #shooting #shootingmedal #fiestaannual

Still Day 3: Remembering the Filipino and American soldiers who fought at Mount Samat in the Battle of Bataan and the locals who remain on You’re usually able to go up into the cross and get a view of Manila Bay, but we got there on the last day it was closed before it would open again for the following days national holiday: Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valour). The surrender of 78,000 soldiers led to the Bataan Death March. The exact figures of fallen are unknown. Estimates range from 5,500 to 18,650 POW deaths. (The last 2 pics are of cats. Always like to represent past athletes from the P.I Rodrigo del Rosario (Olympic weightlifter): Originally from the municipality of Cabangan in the province of Zambales, Rodrigo del Rosario represented the Philippines in featherweight weightlifting at three Summer Olympics from 1948 through 1956. At his first tournament he placed fifth in a field of twenty-three competitors. In 1952 he placed fourth of twenty-two in the event, his best Olympic finish, and set a world (and Olympic) record in the military press portion of the event. He lifted 105kg, surpassing the 100kg lifted by [Jafar Salmasi] at the previous Games, and became the first Pinoy weighlifter to set an Olympic record. ______________ After his competitive years were over, Del Rosario became a trainer of young weightlifters and was the coach of the 1968 Pinoy Weightlifting Team to the Olympics. A nephew who was in that team would eventually win a world title — Salvador Del Rosario. The Philippines was colonized by Spain for over 300 years before gaining a sense of freedom in 1898. Unbeknownst to Filipinos, the United States acquired the Philippines as a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898. After defeating the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Manila Bay, American forces took control of the Philippines. However, rather than granting the Philippines independence, the United States purchased the islands from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris for $20 million. The US justified its control over the Philippines by framing it as a form of liberation, promising to uplift and civilize the Filipino people. However, this promise was soon broken as the United States suppressed Filipino attempts at independence, leading to the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1902. Despite fierce resistance from Filipino nationalists, the United States maintained control over the Philippines until granting independence in 1946. Throughout this period, the US government exploited the resources of the Philippines and suppressed dissent, all while perpetuating the myth of benevolent assimilation and liberation. #philippinecolonization #freepalestine #freesudan #ceasefire #decolonizeyourmind #colonialawakening #palestinewillbefree #sudanwillbefree #PhilippinesHistory #USColonialism #PhilippinesIndependence #PhilippinesSolidarity #LiberationMyth #solidarity #PhilippinesEmpowerment #USImperialism #PhilippinesResistance #metgala2024

Maria Isabel Luisa de Borbon y Borbon-Dis Sicilias (better known as Queen Isabel II) was proclaimed Queen on July 17, 1834. As a young girl, she was known as “the Child of Liberty.” To make the proclamation event eternal and memorable in the annals of our history not to mention to make it a much sought after numismatic pieces, silver coins were thrown to the crowds during the Proclamation ceremonies which we now recognize as proclamation medals listed in Honeycutt’s book on Philippines medals and jetons as Honeycutt-11. These “medals” were considered coins due to their size as very similar to the 2 reales silver coins. After 34 years (1834-1868) and after all these years it seems that history has ignored the fact that despite all the turmoil in her life, Queen Isabel II was a strong and independent queen, one who will go down in history in Spanish history as a Queen that never really reached her full potential due to the fact that she may have been out of place — a queen in a society that wanted a king. She died in Paris on April 9, 1904. Sources: 1. Barilla: The Central Bank Money Museum Quarterly. Vol. II No. 4. Oct 1975. 2. Lopez Phd., Tom, 2021 “The Queen’s Moroccan War,” The Numismatist. The Casa de Moneda de Manila was inaugurated on March 19, 1861 which was an event that was commemorated with the issuance of a gold and silver medal. Presented here is the silver variant with the bust of the Queen, Isabel II with the inscription “Isabel 2a Reina De Las Espana” on the obverse and the inscription “Inauguracion De La Casa de Moneda de Manila” on the reverse. According to the same Barilla monogram dated October 1975 that was mentioned in our previous instagram post, the renowned Philippine historian and numismatist Angelita Legarda mentioned that the mint stood in the corner of Cabildo and Recoletos streets in Intramuros and was housed in wooden building which was later used as the Office of the Department of Education during the American regime. It was originally decreed that the Mint was established for the sole purpose of converting “onzas” of the Spanish-American republics into coins for the Philippines. The first coins were the 4-peso, 2-peso and 1-peso denominations which corresponded to the 80-reales, 40-reales and 20-reales of Spain. It was decided that since the basic monetary unit of the Philippines, then still a colony of Spain was the peso, the gold coins for use in the Philippines should bear denominations in pesos rather that their Spanish counterparts or equivalents. A medal that was what historian and numismatist Angelita Legarda described as “a puzzler to Philippine numismatists” when it was first discovered because its issuance was suppose to commemorate the building of a bridge which many historians, it seems have been unable to locate. The obverse has the image of Queen Isabel II, similar to the mint inauguration medal that was released a year earlier. The medal was struck in silver and the reverse depicts a bridge and bears the inscription “Inauguracion de Las Obras del Puente Tubular” around, and below is the supposed date of inauguration “21 de Junio - 1862”. According to Legarda, It would seem that the medal may have been issued prematurely for a projected that may have been aborted. There have been no known recordings of the event in the gazette (Gaceta) that records and describes all important events occurring at that time. Nothing about the “Puente Tubular” has been located or even the date given on the medal, nor even a quick search online has been found. Atlas De Filipinas Colleccion de 30 mapas by: Fr. Jose Maria Algue, SJ. Director Del Observatorio De Manila José María Algué, SJ (29 December 1856 – 27 May 1930), was a Spanish Roman Catholic Jesuit priest and meteorologist in the observatory of Manila. He invented the barocyclonometer, which is a a form of aneroid barometer used in conjunction with a dial having adjustable arrows to determine the location and movement of a tropical cyclone and the nephoscope, which is a 19th-century instrument for measuring the altitude, direction, and velocity of clouds, using transit-time measurement. Fr. Algue was commissioned to create this very rare book which consists of 24 maps of the Philippine Islands and one map of the Pacific Islands. What I find fascinating is the information on the mapping of the ethnographic structure of the archipelago which breaks down all the ethnicities in the country at that time. ATENEO DE MANILA Authorized by a royal decree back in 1852, ten Jesuit priests landed in Manila on April 14, 1859 to do mainly missionary work in Mindanao and Jolo. However, 4 months later, the ayuntamiento or city council requested Governor General Rafael Geronimo Cayetano Izquierdo y Gutierrez for a Jesuit school financed by public money. On October 1 of the same year, Governor-General Izquierdo took over the Escueta Municipal which was a small private school for 30 spanish children. Under the Jesuits, the Escueta became Ateneo Municipal de Manila. When the Americans colonial rule started in 1902, the school lost its government subsidy and a year later became a private institution and the Jesuits finally removed the word “Municipal” from the official name and named it Ateneo de Manila. These are 6 Postcards of different scenes at the Ateneo de Manila circa 1910-1920. Scene: 1. Ateneo Physics Cabinet in Manila, Philippines 2. The dining room of Ateneo 3. 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧? Did you know every April 9 marks the Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, in the Philippines? This significant day commemorates the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Filipinos and American soldiers during World War II. On April 9, 1942, Major General Edward P. King, along with over 76,000 soldiers, surrendered to the Japanese forces, leading to the infamous Bataan Death March. This harrowing ordeal saw thousands of prisoners endure starvation, dehydration, and disease during a grueling 90-mile trek to Camp O’Donnell. Despite the immense challenges they faced, the captured soldiers displayed remarkable resilience and heroism. The surrender of Bataan ultimately slowed down the Japanese advance, providing crucial time for allied forces to regroup and prepare for subsequent battles. It was a pivotal moment in history, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people in the face of adversity. Today, Araw ng Kagitingan stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom and democracy. Through national observances and public holidays, we honor the memory of the heroes of Bataan, Corregidor, and Bessang, ensuring that their legacy of valor lives on. #EdFolio #ArawNgKagitingan #BataanDeathMarch #9thofApril #PhilippinesHistory

Traditional Chinese Medicine in the PH 🇨🇳 * TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine. it originated in China during the Zhou Dynasty. TCM uses a blend of acupuncture and herbal remedies to treat symptoms. this is also where the symbol and theory of Yin Yang comes from. in Chinese Medicine it’s important that your Yin and Yang are balanced to maintain a healthy lifestyle. * TCM was introduced in the Philippines in the 1960’s but it didnt gain recognition considering the conflicts China and the Philippines have had. it wasn’t until recent times that TCM in the Philippines has been used and been recognized. * in 2019 the first Traditional Chinese Medicine center opened in Mandaluyong. it’s partnered with Fuijian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. since then other TCM centers have opened up in the Philippines with most locations ( if not all as of currently ) being in Metro Manila. #filipino #tsinoy #tsinoyhistory #tcm #philippineshistory #chinesehistory #chinesherbalmedicine #naturalmedicine

The Rio Grand Rubber Estates was a corporation organized in 1915 under the laws of the Philippines, with assets consisting of a rubber plantation in two parcels of land situated in Kabacan, Cotabato. The company was eventually sold in October 1943 to the Ohta Development Co., a Japanese corporation, and at the height of the war. Following the transfer of the entire shares of stock of the corporation, the Ohta Development Co. took possession of and operated the rubber plantation until the liberation of Cotabato in June 1945, when the United States Army, through its Alien Property Custodian, took over the custody of the plantation. The ownership and control of this corporation was later transferred to the Republic of the Philippines in accordance with the Philippine Property Act of 1946 (Act of Congress of the United States of July 3, 1946) and Republic Act No. 8. The Rio Grande Rubber Estate Co., Inc., together with other enemy-owned corporations, were abolished by Executive Order No.372 promulgated by then President Elipidio Quirino on Nov. 24, 1950. Finally, on June 20, 1952, Republic Act No. 763 was approved establishing the Mindanao Institute of Technology which took over the two parcels of land belonging to Rio Grande. Years later, the company tried to get back these two properties by claiming that the sale to Ohta was done under duress, but lost in a case they filed, which eventually led to the closure of the company. This token was used as currency inside the plantation and came in other denominations. This is the only one graded by NGC. source: https://lawyerly.ph/juris/view/c34b6 #philippines🇵🇭 #philippines #philippineshistory #riogrande #plantation #rubber #token #exonumia #1915 #wwii #war #japanese #usarmy #1943 #cotabato #mindanao #ohta

Full Moon Rituals 🌕 * our ancestors loved the moon! the moon deity is known by different names depending on the region but in Tagalog and Ilokano he is referred to as Bulan. his story also varies by region but across the board Bulan is a symbol of wisdom and light in the dark times and represented by the lotus and Takay flower. * during the full moon Filipinos would give offerings such as food and planting certain fruit trees to bring in a good harvest. some tribes would use this time to rest as a way to honor their ancestors. * something i do during a full moon is charge my crystals and bless my jade and gold jewelry with incense! since gold ( and jade if you’re tsinoy ) is such an important part of our spirituality, i’ve found that blessing it during a full moon keeps the anito close and happy. #filipino #philippineshistory #fullmoon #spirtuality #precolonialhistory #reconnecting
