These are 5 things I am tired of hearing trying to lose weight while struggling with PCOS 1. Exercise more and eat less Ohhh my.. I have lost count of the number of times someone has suggested this to me. Do they think we have not tried it. It is like the basic thing one does when they try to lose weight. However when you deal with PCOS things are not that simple. How much less can you eat and how much more can you workout without harming your mental and physical health. Pcos is not just a reproductive disorder. It affects our metabolism, our hormones and our energy making it even more difficult to lose weight. 2. Have only fruits or salads for Dinner So that I can feel hungry later and binge? Or stay in bed feeling hungry and being angry at myself for being overweight. Losing sleep and waking up with 0 energy? No thanks. Instead I will eat a balanced meal with protein, fat, carbs and enough fiber to fuel my body and brain. 3. Just walk and your weight will fall off. They think that overweight people are lazy and eat calorie dense food all the time. This is the reason why they make such stereotypical statements. However many of us follow mindful eating and keep ourselves active. 4. Skipping meals to lose weight is not a lasting solution. This will in turn promote eda and st@rv@tion. 5. If you are looking to lose weight then you should keep away from your favourite foods. Dessert and others included. Again eliminating your favourite foods will make you crave them more and you eventually end up having more than you want. No for real PCOS fam, who else gets sooo tired of hearing that? ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™‹ PCOS is a complex SYNDROME - itโ€™s right there in the name! By definition, a syndrome is: a group of signs and symptoms that go together but donโ€™t have a one-size fits all cause, course, or treatment plan. Weight struggles are just one of the issues that may result from PCOS. The existing weight bias in PCOS care not only boils down all symptoms to make it โ€œour faultโ€ for not having enough โ€œwillpowerโ€, it also neglects the importance of making lifestyle adjustments across any weight or BMI. PCOS is a whole-body condition, no matter whether you live in a thin body or a larger body. What we know is this: it is true what we see, that insulin resistance, inflammation, excess androgens, and excess fat stores or deposits can often move together, perpetuating each other. The idea is that through reducing body fat, there will be a domino effect on insulin resistance, inflammation and excess androgens. HOWEVER!!! If you are losing weight in an โ€œat any costsโ€ mentality, meaning you are under nourishing your body, over-exercising, eliminating entire food groups that you may not need to, etc., it is likely this will further disrupt your neuroendocrine pathways. Eventually you may also find that even extreme measures will not result in weight loss. Focusing solely on weight loss also neglects the full scope of changes you can make to see improvements in your PCOS symptoms. In the same way that lowering body fat can help improve insulin resistance, inflammation, and excess androgens, working on lowering inflammation, or on insulin resistance, can also help the system! Caring for your PCOS means a multi-faceted approach that is about understanding your body, advocating for your health, and finding balance in strategies that work for you and your unique situation! Continuing to care for ourselves before, into, and after menopause is crucial for PCOS ๐Ÿ’™ โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € Previous misconceptions about PCOS suggested that after menopause, symptoms disappear. But the reality is that hormone profiles, lipid profiles, and metabolic function, continue to differ in the PCOS population even after menopause. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € We want to get ahead of, or deal with, those conditions we might be at higher risk for with PCOS that might increase in risk with age as well.
