Today, I watched Babes, a comedy about a woman who gets pregnant from a one-night stand. She leans on her married best friend and mother to guide her through gestation and beyond. Babes was a bit of a hit when it played a SXSW, but it feels like the festival hype didn't do them any favors like it used to for films like this. While I did enjoy Broad City when it was running, I couldn't say I felt the same about stuff that Ilana Glazer has been involved with afterward. There were some laughs here and there with Babes, but I felt like most of the laughs came from the supporting cast. To be honest, I found Glazer's character to be rather annoying. Her character seems like the person who'd rather focus their time coming up with a joke rather than helping their friend in need. Glazer does provide some laughs here and there, but I also thought she was trying too hard to generate laughs. It felt like she needed to bust out some joke every 15 seconds whenever she was onscreen. It probably would've worked better if there was any time for Babes to breathe. Even the way the story moves forward kinda came off a bit lackadaisical in certain stretches. Pamela Adlon seems to try to aim for something grounded while Glazer tries to go over the top with her performance, and it just didn't mesh well for me personally. This is one of the best movies of the year. It was consistently funny and entertaining and most importantly heartfelt. Regarding the former, there were many laugh out loud jokes/scenes — my favorites being how much Upper West Side sushi costs, a reference to The Omen, and the scene around amniocentesis. The infectious energy and chemistry between the two leads also helped to elevate the material even more. In addition, there was a shocking reveal early on that impressed me with how bold of a decision it was, and the structure of the film was neat in how it follows all the beats of a rom com even though its central relationship is between platonic friends. The thing that sealed the deal for me and caused me to boost my score, however, was the ending. There are multiple moments where the film becomes genuinely and surprisingly heartfelt, and one scene in particular literally made me tear up. That scene used my favorite screenwriting tactic (delayed setup and payoff), too, so that’s always a plus. My only small qualms are that it doesn’t make sense as a woman living in New York to hook up with a random dude you meet on the subway that same day, and Dawn’s character was slightly inconsistently written with how she’s clueless about certain aspects of pregnancy/child rearing even though she’s already done it with her first kid not too long ago. Overall, Babes was an absolute blast at the movies, and it’s certainly the best comedy and funniest film of the year.

It’s films like these that make me feel equally seen and equally aware of things from a different perspective. Babes really shines a light on the dynamics of friendship between a coupled friend and the perpetually single friend. I appreciate films like these that really get to the rawness of change and responsibility life can put us through. Films that show us the different possibilities people can have that don’t conform to a societal norm and don’t always have to be negative. I wish I could have a hilariously intimate bond that Eden and Dawn share but I guess I’ll just have to settle with feeling like I’m a ghostly third party along for the journey with them. They remind me that everyone is strong in their own way but at the end of the day it’s the bonds (good or bad) we make that help shape us and get through life. Babes is raunchy, funny, emotional, and unabashedly proud. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau are dynamite. I was especially moved by Oliver Platt as well. Chef: 📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀 (9/10 discs) I feel it’s almost commonplace to say the following sentence whenever it refers to some films, but it has to be said; they just don’t make them like this anymore. ‘Chef’ is the stacked loaded cast of John Favreau‘s film about a chef who finds his passion to cook again while on a journey to get closer with his son. It’s a simple family film that has as much heart as it does food and I can’t stress enough. Do not watch this film hungry or you will pause it and make a grilled cheese like I did when I first saw this. The soundtrack is incredible. The feel and tone and colors of the movie are bright and inviting and just makes you want to hang out with everyone and have it never end. We travel all over the country seeing amazing food and great bonding scenes with friends and family. ‘Chef’ is outright just an amazing feel good movie that makes you smile as you watch it. It’s fun to see John Favreau step outside the MCU world when this was released and get some amazing people like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson and others that were very big at the time to do such a small and intimate film about food that he was clearly very passionate about. I’m so glad this movie was made. X-Men: First Class | Movie Review In the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them. X-Men prequels continue here with First Class and back in 2011, I had serious doubts of this movie, especially lacking Wolverine in it (despite the cameo) and I was very surprised when I loved it when I was still in high school. However, over time, I don't love it much but I do enjoy it. It was great seeing Charles and Erik in their early days coming to terms with who they are and working together while eventually going apart. Their relationship is the strongest point of the film with also leading new recruits was interesting even if some of the characters don't have that awesome of powers. As for villains, Kevin Bacon is a great actor but his villain kinda felt like he was just there as a precursor to Magneto and the performance from Emma Frost was just plain lousy, plus his sidekicks were very much bland and forgettable. There's not as much action in this film as one would think normally from an X-Men film but it's still pretty good since it's focusing on the characters and bringing them up more, which leads to Mystique. She's given a whole new side here which is interesting and thoughtful, especially her moments with Beast. There's alot of quips and exciting moments plus a pivotal divide by the end that is effective and sets up the future strongly. Just a few short comings that for me dial down my feelings towards this entry. La acción transcurre en Nueva York el día de Acción de Gracias, lo cual ese clima invernal le da un tono azulado y tenue a la fotografía que le sienta genial al género. La música de Mark Isham también funciona a las mil maravillas. Michael Douglas (The Game) y nuestra querida y añorada Brittany Murphy (Deadline) protagonizan el film.
