This weekend is so layered with tender joy and grief. Today, we celebrated our incredible @baylorsocialwork graduates (sic ‘em, bears!), and I got to sit beside my wonderful mentor, Dr. Danielle Parrish, who I’m so thankful I get to call both a colleague and friend. As we watched the students graduating, I was reminded that it was 10 years ago this month when she hooded me for my PhD graduation. What a whirlwind the last decade has been, full of learning curves and sweet opportunities, and I’m thankful for her ongoing support, mentoring, and care throughout all of it. 💛 Tomorrow, our family is headed to Houston to attend the memorial service of another beloved mentor who meant so much to me, Dr. Andy Achenbaum (light blue regalia in the last picture). Andy was passionate about mentoring, gerontology, spirituality, and only taking the *really* important things seriously. (Oh, the stories...) We met regularly throughout grad school, traveled to Turkey for a study abroad trip with a group from UH, he served on my dissertation committee, and we continued meeting virtually after I graduated (mainly to laugh with my kids and be a kid with them). He loved his students and colleagues and their families well — not just as students/colleagues, but as fellow travelers, as whole people, as others who carry the spark of the divine. 💛 The side-by-side of these two days seems as tender as my heart feels. I’m filled with gratitude, grief, love, and the honest hope of being a fraction of the mentor to my students/mentees as my mentors have been to me. May my students/mentees know they are just as loved and valued as my mentors have shown me over the years…may it be so. 🤲

💣️Discipline is the best way to get what you want in life. . Most people will bail on doing the right thing because they're tired, don't feel like it, need a break, don't have time... and then beat themselves up for not following through. . And that's not going to get you where you want to be in 6 months or a year. . You see the outcomes all the time - people talk about relapsing because they got complacent, they stopped going to meetings, stopped hanging out with other like-minded people, stopped doing the activities that got them sober in the first place. . If we start focusing on the follow through, and stop focusing on how we feel in the moment, we can create whatever outcome we want. . And if you are leading by example, and want to show people what's really possible when living a sober life, it's our responsibility to focus on the right things and teach the next person coming in how to do it WELL and get RELIEF. . As opposed to modeling a half-assed approach and wondering why it's not working. 🤷♀️ . What if you did the right thing just because it's the right thing, even if you don't feel like it? . What if you showed up for yourself and your recovery consistently, NO MATTER WHAT? . It’s not only me who suffers but it does become a family disease as well. I thank GOD everyday for his love to continue to carry me through! I am extremely blessed to have my life back.
