One of our "goodwill givers" on WDSD was Mike, a young man who joined our Pathfinder School community earlier this year. He and his family generously made ribbons to share with his school friends, spreading awareness and smiles. And then there are the many gifts of #nycm socks ... our colleagues at NYCM support sock fundraisers each March 21, amazing us both with colorful patterns and their touching generosity (more news to come!). At the end of a long and sunny saturday, we really keep in our hearts all the joy and the warmth we experienced at the Netherlands Young Catholic Meetup, that took place between the Singel Kerk (that we thank for hospitality), the Papegaai and, of course, our beloved Krijtberg. Around 80 young boys and girls from all the country and of all nationalities came to meet each other and welcome all the surprises this day offered. Through a very deep and magistral lecture by P. Jean Paul Hernandez about hope and exile, a session about gratitude and group sharings, we really felt being part of a great family gathered by the same faith. Antes que el Sol nos derrita, salimos tempranito, incluso le dimos pelea al gallo madrugador! Hoy fue el famoso empezar de cero otra vez, recuperando fuerza, piernas y aire! Volviendo a la pista intentando sentirme cómodo, pensando y calculando cada paso, aprendiendo de los errores y dejando todo lo que fue atrás! Una mañana especial, pues post entreno, el sábado tuvo su propio color tan lindo como las mismas fotos y eso es porque pude disfrutar de la pista con Guadita, mientras veíamos entrenar a mamá! The ugly side of racing…. Revel Big Bear left me unsettled. I hoped to finally set a lifetime PR in the half at this race - something I have yet to do as a mom. 5 years after having my twins, I’ve been running and strength training at high levels now for a few years, doing speed work weekly, long runs consistently. My body is physically stronger than when I PR'd 9 years ago. I have more experience, a stronger mindset, more cumulative miles on my legs. I feel like I’m due for a confidence boosting breakthrough, and was hoping this would be it. But it wasn’t. I’m FRUSTRATED by it. I said it. I’m annoyed that it’s taking so long. It feels like I have worked harder than I did before kids, yet I do not run faster. But here’s the thing: I didn’t show up to Revel Big Bear half like it was going to be a lifetime PR day. I showed up casually thinking that I “deserved” to run fast because of the fast course and my base fitness level, even though this race wasn’t the focus of my training. That attitude just doesn’t bring out the mindset we need to push through tough moments. I like to leave a race feeling like I truly gave it my all, but there’s a part of me that wonders if I held back too much in the early miles. I also don’t truly believe I pushed as hard as I could in the later miles, which I hate to admit. I think I’m unsettled not because I missed my goal, but because I don’t feel like I gave it my all. I feel like I wanted to work hard, but not THAT hard during the race. And I mentally accepted the defeat. I share the ugly side of my competitiveness & self criticism to be real. Running is hard. It brings out a side of us that most of us don’t see in our every day lives. I actually LOVE that part of it. The eternal puzzle of figuring out performance mystifies and intrigues me. Failure and frustration is just part of the game. So while I left the race frustrated, you know me….now I’m fired up to figure this out and get better. This was absolutely priceless to medal my running crew Jillian, who is not on FB at the moment and Patricia Alzate Salebe at the biggest marathon in world yesterday.
