“Around the turn of the twelfth century A.D., a group of men abandoned a baby in a remote forest. The men had already carried out their nefarious plot—murdering a nobleman by the name of John d’Uskglass, whose estate once rested in the north of England. Lest they one day be outmaneuvered by Uskglass’s heir, they left the baby in an ancient wood, hoping the wild beasts would finish the job. But the fairies found him first.“ Thoughts on Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, twenty years after it was originally published. #crossroadsgazette #susannaclarke #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #jonathanstrange #ravenking #fairies #fairy #fairycore #fantasynovel #fantasynovels #fantasybooks #mrnorrell

SPOTTED 👀 Numbered UK ARC for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. $650 on Mercari 🥵 Jonathan Strange had a cool release where they had both white and black covers in the first printing. There's a non-numbered ARC out there as well that has a black cover but a dual black & white spine! That's cooler imo 😂 I don't know which ones are UK or US, but a numbered Bloomsbury has got to be UK. I imagine the other one is UK as well but I'm not sure (going off of Starless Sea, there was a UK numbered arc, a UK non-numbered arc -the red one on my page-, and a US arc with the US cover). #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #jonathanstrange #ukarc #bookcollector #bookcollecting

❤️ A love letter to the three books that got me into fantasy - Part 3 - See parts 1 and 2 for LOTR and Neverwhere ❤️ ❤️ Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke - this book deserves far more recognition! Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (what a mouthful!) is a debut (how?!?) historical fantasy set in early 19th century England, around the time of the Napoleonic Wars. It’s an alternative history novel with a premise that magic used to exist in England and it’s now making a comeback thanks to two men, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell ✨ Both men could not be any different in character 👀 and yet so begins an unlikely, not exactly friendship.... relationship 🙈 The story follows their attempts to bring magic back to England, their personal struggles, flaws, selfish aspirations but also goodness. The book is phenomenal, rich in historical facts, often altered to suit the story. Similar to the other books I mentioned, you will get lost in this fictional world and stepping out of it will change something forever ✨❤️ ❓ Have you read this monumental story? Or watched the TV adaptation (which btw I haven’t seen so curious to hear reviews!)? #susannaclarke #jonathanstrange #historicalfantasy #mrnorell bookstagram reader fantasy romantasy books review recommendation

🌊A narrativa é única, original e criativa.

✨ First, Last, Next: Favorite Author Edition ✨ 🐉 Robin Hobb First: Assassin’s Apprentice Last: The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince Next: Shaman’s Crossing I was immediately captivated by The Realm of the Elderlings upon reading Assassin’s Apprentice almost four years ago. I went through the whole series in less than a year, and have been mourning the ending of it ever since. I’m a little scared to pick up the Soldier Son trilogy, since it has mixed to poor reviews, but at the same time, I have complete faith in Robin Hobb and think I’ll still enjoy it. I think reading that series will be one of my 2024 reading goals. 🪄 Susanna Clarke First: Piranesi Last: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell Next: The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories I almost feel like I shouldn’t say an author with only two novels out is my favorite, but both were such easy five stars for me that I can’t not include her. I’m excited to read her short story collection soon and crossing my fingers for the possible JS&MN sequel. 💓 Jane Austen First: Pride and Prejudice Last: Emma Next: Love and Freindship and Other Youthful Writings Pride and Prejudice was the first classic I loved. I saw the 2005 movie sometime in middle school, and I was immediately hooked. I then proceeded to read the novel countless times over the years, and it usually takes the top spot when I’m asked what my favorite book is. A couple years ago I read all of Jane Austen’s full-length novels, but I’ve yet to dive into any of her unfinished, early, and short works. Do you have any authors whose work you are saving because you don’t want to have nothing left to read from them? I’m dreading the day I have no new Robin Hobb to read 😢 🐉🪄💓 #RobinHobb #RealmOfTheElderlings #AssassinsApprentice #TheWilfulPrincessAndThePiebaldPrince #FoolsErrand #ShamansCrossing #SusannaClarke #Piranesi #JonathanStrangeAndMrNorrell #JonathanStrange #MrNorrell #TheLadiesofGraceAdieu #JaneAusten #JaneAustenBooks #PrideandPrejudice #Emma #LoveAndFreindship #FavoriteAuthors #FavoriteAuthor #FavouriteAuthor #FavoriteBooks #FavouriteBooks #BookishFlatlay #FlatlayBooks #BookFlatlay #BookstagramFlatlay #IReadBooks #BookPics #BookReader

Autumn is here, which is the perfect time to delve into books (well, that's my excuse anyway)! Took a trip to the wonderful Waterstones in Truro - a place I have spent so much of my time! I haven't been here since April, so it was nice to be back. Picked up a couple of books on Monday (as you can see, I've already started one of them!) ➼ A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton ➼ Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke Out of curiosity, I wanted to find out what book was number one in the charts on the day I was born. It happens to be the 14th book in this Sue Grafton series (according to NY Times - I'm not too sure about Sunday Times). Rather than reading the 14th book, I thought I would just read the first one. So, it's technically a book from 1982, not my birth year, but that's okay! As for JS&MN - that was a recommendation from a friend! The sheer size alone is pretty daunting, but I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to books!

#jonathanstrangeeilsignornorrell #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #jonathanstrange #mrnorrell #fazzieditore

𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 & 𝐌𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐥 📚 by @susannaclarke_ It is a fantasy novel, an alternative history, and a historical novel. It inverts the Industrial Revolution conception of the North–South divide in England: in this book the North is romantic and magical, rather than rational and concrete. The story set in 19th-century England around the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Its premise is that magic once existed in England and has returned with two men: Gilbert Norrell & Jonathan Strange. Centred on the relationship between these two men, the novel investigates the nature of "Englishness" and the boundaries between reason & unreason, Anglo-Saxon & Anglo-Dane, and Northern & Southern English cultural tropes/stereotypes. In a world where magic has not been practiced for many years, magic has become only theoretical in nature, and theoretical magicians gather to discuss old papers and writings left by magicians of another age. However, one practical magician appears to reshape the course of magic in England, and summons a faerie with unintended consequences. If you like fantasy and older English novels, this is definitely the book for you! Although this is a modern fantasy book, it is written in an older style–it’s not fast-paced, and it loves delving into the lore of its world and the interesting characters that inhabit it. The pages were often marked with little footnotes telling a little tale about the magical past of England, which I found fascinating. Despite not being a fast-paced novel, the world and characters were rich enough to keep me intrigued throughout. This scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had, and this was definitely one of my favorite reads recently. #bookreview #bookstagram #instabook #bookish #bookishcommunity #reading #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #magic #fiction #fantasy #adultfiction #gaslampfantasy #susanaclarke #jonathanstrange #mrnorrell

#nuoveuscitelibri #libri #susannaclarke #fazieditore #ledamedigraceadieu #fantasy #librifantasy #piranesi #JonathanStrange

Magic! One of my all time favourite themes in board games, books and well..everything really. I've taken 2 shots for May's #boardsandbooks challenge as I love magic so much. This photo is probably an obvious choice - I've paired the incredible Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell with the Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell Board Game of English Magic. If you have not read this book, you are in for a treat when you do! It's absolutely brilliant! (As are all of Susanna Clarke's novels! I love them all!) * * This books and games challenge is run by @gamingoverboard and @getintogames (originally started by @blendedfamilygamers). This month's theme was chosen by the lovely @boardgamingwithmyfamily . * * * #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrel #susannaclarke #jonathanstrange #fantasybooks #fantasybook #fantasybookstagram #fantasybooklover #boardgame #boardgames #tabletopgames #booksandboardgames #bookloversofinstagram #bookishlife #boardgamelife #boardgamesandbooks

Le parole di Dorian Gray calzano a pennello per questo romanzo: "there is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about" che parafrasato significa "parlarne bene o parlarne male non importa, purché se ne parli". #liberludens #strange #jonathanstrange #salamandra #wizard #janeausten #fantasia #caracas #venezuela

Hello world! Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri / Eid Mubarak to my fellow muslim friends! 26th day post op and here I am with a selection of books I planned on reading but have yet to start 😬. So far I have only read three books (not pictured). I have all the time in the world but most of the time I just wasn't in the mood to read. I didn't even watch Netflix or any other shows that much. What have I been doing actually 😂😂. Aanywayyy. That's my update. Maybe I'll read that Backman today, since it's the shortest. Maybe Tombs next. We'll see. What are you currently reading? . . . . . . . #richardosman #thebulletthatmissed #maryanawakeningofterror #nadcassidy #jonathanstrange #tombs #junjiito #faultlines #emilyitami #fredrikbackman #andeverymorningthewayhomegetslongerandlonger #ronaldmalfi #ghostwritten #malaysiamembaca

#tbr23in23 - Book 5/23 Currently reading The Ladies of Grace Adieu, a short story collection set in the fairy-crossed alternate history England of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I tried tackling the tome that is the latter a few years ago but found it to be a bit dense and gave up. But this one’s much easier (and fun) to read…maybe because of the witches, I guess :P Also, this particular edition is such a beauty with its cloth bound hardcover and beautiful floral illustrations by Charles Vess, that adds to the pleasure of reading these delightful stories. . . . . . . . . . #susannaclarke #jonathanstrange #jonathanstrangeandmrnorrell #theladiesofgraceadieu #ravenking #faerieworlds #unitedbookstagram #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #fantasyfiction #fantasyfictionbooks #bookworm #bookdragon #tbr23in23 #booksbooksbooks #shelfiesunday #bookstagramcommunity

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke An absolute beast of a book. Take England's foremost magician, make him a reclusive prig, force him to work with an unreliable, drifting and curious mind and then just sit back and watch. From re-arranging roads, to other less honourable magics, Strange and Norrell's journey is epic in scale and hilarious in more than a few places. Thank you Susanna Clarke. #jonathanstrange&mrnorrell #SusannaClarke #Bloomsbury #fiction #magic #books #herbiereadsagain

𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒔...... What can you say about a book that's been nearly two years in reading? A book that's seen you through some fairly trying times, accompanied you on countless trips, become a sort of fixture by your bedside? How would you feel when you finished reading such a book? Relief? Sadness? Exuberance? The enormity of the fact that I finally, finally finished reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell nearly two years after I (yes, me) initiated a buddy read (with @mostlybooking and @candid_copywriter ) is yet to sink in. Usually, three months is what I give a book. If in those three months I'm unable to finish it, it gets moved to the DNF shelf (or what I'd like to call The Graveyard). So, it's a testament to Clarke's writing and the gentlemen Mr Strange and Mr Norrell that I stuck it out for as long as I did. And I don't regret it. Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite fantasy authors said, "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years.” – an assessment I wholeheartedly agree with. In a way, I'm glad I took as long as I did because I got to savour the book in its entirety and have come to the conclusion that JSMN is weird, deliciously deranged, is English humour at its finest and the best example of dark academia there exists. What I mean to say is, I loved the book. I loved the difficult, self-involved, arrogant Mr Norrell, the equally arrogant and presumptuous Mr Strange, the pitiable Stephen Black, the villainous Gentleman with the Thistle-Down hair, the gentle Arabella, the detestable Lascelles, the alternate England of the 1800s, the various references to famous names of the era (the Duke of Wellington, Napoleon, Byron), the writing, the footnotes, the infuriating ego-war Strange and Norrell have (to the exclusion of everything around them), that strangely romantic final act, and that painful open end. JSMN is a book I cannot recommend enough. So, what's the longest you've taken to read a book? PS: a more traditional review on my GR page, if you'd like to read one.
