Drams with friends- The Glenallachie and two Glencadams didn’t spark much interest with folks finding them too light and subtle with little going on. Excitement built when we got on to the Craigellachie, that PX influence inspiring tasting notes that sounded more like a Starbucks order (coffee, mocha, oat milk, cinnamon dusting etc.) It’s rival for favourite of the night came with the Scarabus, rich and earthly with sweet caramel undertones. Do you remember the last time an inaugural release was readily available and pretty affordable? I don’t! And coming from Islay, that should be even more complicated but Ardbahoe have made it possible again! And I picked up 2 bottles of this one after trying it yesterday. Expectations for a new Islay malt are always going to be high but this Inaugural release from Ardbahoe definitely doesn’t disappoint, it is absolutely delicious! Presented very naturally, aged for 5 years, bottled at 50%, this is the way to do it. And with a lot of sweetness, some tasty peat and a slightly ashy salty finish not too dissimilar from Caol Ila, this is well worth the £70! Bottle will be opened soon for full tasting notes so stay tuned! . Ardnahoe Inaugural Release! Den 10 maj 2024 händer något anmärkningsvärt inom whisky världen. Hunter Laing Co. Ltd lanserar sin första buteljering från destilleriet Ardnahoe. Av en ”ren händelse” råkar jag befinna mig i Edinburgh denna dag och ilar iväg till The Whisky Shop på Multrees Walk där lanseringen äger rum. Till min stora glädje är Stewart Laing, en ikon inom whiskyindustrin, på plats och jag får ett givande samtal med honom. Stewart har tillsammans med sönerna Andrew och Scott grundat Ardnahoe och tillsammans med Master Distiller Jim McEvan skapat en ny spännande whisky. Hur var då whiskyn? En 5 årig whisky lagrad på 80% Bourbon fat och 20% Sherry fat buteljerad med en styrka på 50% (ABV). Resultatet är alldeles lysande😋. The inaugural release of Ardnahoe whisky will be available soon but we need to wait a few more years until the bar is filled with various Ardnahoe editions. For now, as the distillery is owned by Hunter Laing company, we can choose whisky from their stock at the bar. And that was my second pick that day (along with the obvious pick of whisky of the month at an absolutely fantastic price). Bunnahabhain 27, 1989, 50.8% was really light, full of fresh fruits, with noticeable notes of grain, grass and honey. Nose - Clean ashy/mineral peat, bright lemon zest, honey, salt Taste - Salty bright ashy/mineral smoke, vanilla, lemon, black pepper, citrusy, lemon zest Finish - Lingering salt, fruity ashy smoke, vanilla, lemon zest, light mineral Score - 78/100 Final Thoughts - So I'm no Islay expert by any means, but I've been quite fortunate to have been able to try a few Caol Ila in the past and this screams young ex-bourbon matured Caol Ila to me. It's got the ashy/minerally peat smoke and the refreshing lemon/citrus zest vibe to it from start to finish. Add to the fact that they're a fairly large distillery that is owned by Diageo and so has the capacity for volume for something like this blend by Hunter Laing. It's not bad for the price and delivers a pleasant drinking experience. I'd say it's good enough to sip neat when you want something peated and don't want to think about it, or it'd also be good as a peated mixer.
