It’s #NationalWineDay! We thought we’d talk a bit about our Managed Alcohol Program. When we realized our community members needed a non-residential managed alcohol program, we set one up! The program hosts participants who brew their own wine and help with data gathering and evaluation. Their wine is a safe supply of alcohol that helps them manage or even eliminate their use of alcohol (and even tastes great!) By all accounts, the outcomes have been life changing. By reducing their reliance on non-beverage alcohol (things like rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, or mouth wash), participants can make and keep health-related appointments, report stronger mental health, and improve their overall quality of life. Many participants were able to secure stable housing, get proper health care, and establish lasting relationships with their peers that help them reach their goals. One participant was even able to reconnect with his child because of the help he received! Her Nazareth Housing case worker was able to secure the money she needed to address her rent arrears. But we didn’t stop there. Our team helped enroll her in the Fair Fares program to receive a half-price MetroCard, completed her annual recertification for public assistance benefits, and connected her to our free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to help file her taxes. Our #housingstability strategy is driven by data. A key source of that data is through the efforts of residents volunteering to go door-to-door for Neighbor to Neighbor, our flagship neighborhood canvassing initiative. Neighbor to Neighbor provides residents with critical housing-related resources and also gathers information to better understand the needs of the community. In 2023, we launched the program in Atlanta, and we are using the findings to better support Atlanta #homeowners and #renters.
