Ready made sauce bottled for another day. I had a whole heap of ripe tomatoes that I harvested from the garden this last week. I turned them into “ready to heat & enjoy” sauce by cooking them with onions, garlic, a bit of chilli, oregano, basil and salt & pepper. I usually store my ready made sauce in the freezer but it’s packed full of veggies, berries and pestos that I froze away over the summer. Working with the herbs in this way I feel I get to know and appreciate each herb more fully, its unique plant profile, taste, smell and effect, and it is particularly rewarding when we taste the finished tinctures. I love using herbs from the garden for medicine. I also love that we use just the right blend of the precision of science and the wisdom of tradition. 🌼 What makes these tinctures special? Their taste and effect, the time taken for each one to be made, and all the love that goes into them. Some of the tinctures are fresh plant tinctures, which means straight from the garden to the Apothecary, locally grown and locally made which I feel is very special. 🌼 Anything else we should know ?? Surprise distillation day! I wasn't planning this today, but our white sage was ready to harvest so might as well seize the day! Distilling your own hydrosol from the plants you grow in your yard is kind of an amazing feeling. True garden to bottle in one day! What is hydrosol you might ask? It is the byproduct of steam distilling the plants. The liquid contains microscopic drops of the essential oils from the plants. This can be applied directly to your skin. Hydrosols can be used in making skin toners, aromatherapy, perfumes and much more. I personally use them as my facial toner every day before applying moisturizer. It's very refreshing to spray on a hot day too! It takes about 6 hours each time I run my still. I can't walk away, it must be monitored at all times, keeping the heat steady and refreshing the ice water that runs through the condenser. There are a lot of folks working with their hands, creating art, and pieces to adorn. This is no small feat. Beyond skill, and the creative mind, it takes countless hours of testing, sitting and thinking, conjuring up ideas. These ideas usually come to me when i am trying to go to sleep. And I often have to get up to sketch them out so that I can get them out of my head and onto paper before they disappear in slumber. For some these ideas come easy. But the materializing of them is far more difficult. So much time, energy, money, and heart go into creating something beautiful. Something that speaks to people. As crafters, artists, and creators, we are often stuck between making money and fueling our need to feed the creative itch. Sometimes, if we are lucky the two intersect. Supporting creatives is imperative to humanity. What would the world be without these folks? Without their art, adornments, music, poetry, and skill, and their need to make the world more beautiful, we would be lost. Without these gifts, and supporting their endeavors these arts will die. Our society has given every break in the world to corporations and large companies. But there are no breaks for the artist. We do it because we have to. Because our souls would wither without this outlet of song and making. And in turn, the world would be lacking the gifts and the soul they provide. I say this all not to necessarily encourage someone to buy something from me, but to hopefully encourage some to support any creative who is putting their heart out there for others to experience and enjoy. I know it is not always financially feasible, or convenient to purchase or wait for a handmade piece. But these are usually things that will last a lifetime and can be passed on. Heirlooms for the soul. I thank every single person who has ever purchased something, shared my work, or written words of encouragement. It means more than you know. Today…at The Iris Country Fair, Range Road, Mittagong, Southern Highlands, NSW ‘til 4pm… It’s a very, very long time since I’ve taken a stall anywhere and certainly the first time I’ve packed up Hildegard and taken her on the road! Southernwood cordial🌿 I have a southernwood bush in my backyard, which grows (perhaps too) vigorously. The smell is very similar to cola, hence it gains a nickname “cola herb”. I made it into cordial, which took me 3 days. Topped with soda or sparkling water, I think of it as botanical cola. I’m currently working on a way to share recipes with all of you, so you can try to make my food by yourself. Some Beauty from my day. As I said about another of my soon-to-be released all natural botanical perfumes - "Mulled Rose" - I want to have this year's batch of an ingredient from my garden needed for "..And Other Apparitions" [Southern Gothic in a bottle] well on before releasing that perfume. With perfumes such as these two, I'm working with an ingredient I extracted that has aged for at least a year. The fresh flowers from the majestic tree that is taller than our three story house smell of lemon cream whereas my extraction is dark pollen wine. Fantastic. I spent a sweet Saturday at the Dandelion Festival at the For-rest Retreat center near Salmo, BC. There were multiple vendors set up with unique creations. There was also great music and amazing workshops happening all day with a focus on health, wellness and community. There was even a mobile sauna set up and also really nice walking trails. I love events that bring consciousness & community connection together - really lights up my heart & mind. The few days prior to the festival, I pulled myself out of the garden and got into some medicine making. A few exciting creations were restocked. While going through my inventory, I ended up finding a rogue jar of Wild Rose infused oil - the special ingredient for the Wild Rose Anointment Balm. I had thought I was out of stock - but I got to make a whole new batch of this beloved balm for your smelling and feeling pleasures. Illumine was also restocked - a magical shimmering aromatherapy oil. In mid winter, I felt compelled to try my hand at bottling sunshine...and so became Illumine. It has quickly became a most loved creation with pretty much everyone who got a bottle from the first batch coming back for more....which I didn't have until this past week. An exciting restock! Another exciting addition is the Lilac Honey. Fresh Lilac flowers infused into 20 year aged local Wildflower Honey... it's soooo yummy! And, herbal plant starts also joined this market. I have slowed down this part of my business to make room for other ventures this summer - I have a few varieties of herbal plant starts available, get 'em while you can! A brand new aromatherapy mister also joined the market - Radiance - an uplifting, inspiring alchemical aromatherapy blend. I'll speak more to this in a later post. And, of course, always available, a variety of single homegrown tinctures, alchemical tincture blends, tea blends, hydrosols, aromatherapy blends, smudge blends & salves I will only be at a select few markets this summer - New Denver, Slocan City, Nelson. It is such a joy to visit my little garden.
