Dove's-foot Cranesbill (Geranium molle) in macro. This tiny, pretty little plant is very hardy and grows everywhere from verges to woodland. Although the common names make perfect sense, with the leaves resembling splayed toes and the buds tapered like a crane's bill, the species name 'molle' seems hotly debated in terms of origin. One of the heaviest things I’ve ever lifted is this cast-iron chair used for fastening rails to sleepers. Photographing track maintenance equipment on the South Devon Railway at Staverton meant that I came across a stack of original chairs for sale in the station yard. “Don’t worry”, the chap said, “I’ll get someone to put it in the back of your car”, and with gratitude I drove-off with the headlights pointing up into the sky. I go on about this piece of railwayana because in the Towers’ yard yesterday I noticed the flora that has somehow sprouted underneath all that old iron and fought itself out of oppression into the light. How is that even remotely possible, and what is it? My guess, scouring the wild flower bookshelf, is that it might be Dove’s-foot crane’s-bill, but I’ll probably be pathetically wrong and need stern correction. The Dove's Foot Cranesbill, or geranium molle, is a tiny little wildflower that mostly goes unnoticed. After all, the blooms have about a 1 centimeter diameter. I love the tiny heart-shaped sparkly petals. So, found these in the garden. The first is #europeancornsalad and the second is #dovesfootcranesbill both of which I have never seen come into bloom in my town, let alone in our garden. How they got there I don't know but they're beautiful. The #europeancornsalad flowers themselves are only about a milimetre in diameter which is bonkers. The come in sprays of about two hundred and the lawn just sprang up with about sixty sprays. Utter magic and right on my own doorstep practically. The third photo is of #lemonbalm I mis identified them in a previous post and when gently bruised the leaves do indeed smell of lemon. This week in Backyard Wildlife: Dove’s-Foot Crane’s-Bill! A tiny 2x2 inch illustration. I see this little geranium growing amidst clover and grass along my walks. It is a beautiful and wild ground cover. The “Dove’s- Foot” refers to the shape of the leaves. Having love for both doves and leaves, this makes me happy. The “Crane’s-Bill” refers to the shape of the fruit. Which isn’t around quite yet, but I’ll keep an eye on these plants and sketch some updates throughout the year. While this is not native to NY, it doesn’t seem to pose a threat to the ecosystem here. Indeed, I think it’s a beautiful alternative to our grass lawns – a low maintenance groundcover that sprouts pretty pink flowers in warmer months. Dove's-foot cranesbill These plants are growing along a short section of mown path on Ingleby Clay, which was last cut sixteen days ago. Some of the species were included in the seed mix sown in 2020, others have arrived by themselves. No chemicals are applied. The turf is not scarified. Unlike the meadows, the cuttings are left to rot down. We mow when the grass is too long to walk on without getting wet ankles. Oh look! Another flower in the Geraniaceae family 😵💫 This is dove's foot crane's bill (Geranium molle) 😸 This species is a cute little, low growing native that likes to chill in short vegetation and grass. They're very similar to some other species, particularly small flowered crane's bill (Geranium pusillum), but also hedgerow crane's bill (Geranium pyrenaicum). The pictured species differs from the first in that all ten stamen have an anther (which can be seen very well in pic 3), wheras G. pusillum only has anthers on half the stamens; the petals tend to overlap a little, wheras G. pusillum's petals do not; finally, the hairs on the stem tend to be longer than on G. pusillum. The pictured species differs from the second in that G. pyrenaicum gets much taller before producing flowers (usually over 30cm as opposed to less than 15cm) and that they generally have larger features. These are from the archive, being taken back in late-mid May. They do often flower into September, though, so can still be seen blooming in the UK at the moment. I spotted them along a cycle path/walkway that I like to go down from time to time. Check out the petalless flower (pic 4) that allows for easy viewing of the calyx! This little fella; dove's-foot crane's-bill (Geranium molle L. syn. Geranium villosum Ten, Fam. Geraniaceae, O. Geraniales) has no business blooming mid-December. But that's (manmade) climate change for you. This branched, hairy annual herbaceous is typical spring ephemeral species. The actinomorphic, pentamerous, mauve to purple flowers are a typical aspect of a spring anthropogenic (disturbed) habitat. Yet, this picture was taken today (17.12.2022.) bearing witness to just how off and unpredictable the weather can get. Ovom malenom geranijumu (Geranium molle L. syn. Geranium villosum Ten, Fam. Geraniaceae, O. Geraniales) nije mjesto u zimskom pejzažu. Naprotiv, ova zeljasta jednogodišnja biljčica, sa granatom, dlakavom stabljikom i suprotnim usječenim prostim listovima, pripada proljećnom aspektu antropogenih staništa (onih koje čovjek često narušava). Aktinomorfni, pentamerni roze cvjetovi su dakle dio proljećnog aspekta travnjaka.
