Trying a couple of non-alcoholic wines. From what I’ve tried so far, it seems sparkling wines and still wines with residual sugar have the best chance of being balanced and having some body and structure to match with food. Reds seem particularly challenging. ONES sources grapes from BC’s Okanagan Valley to make fully dry wines (zero sugar) with 0.5% to 1% alcohol by volume. This 2021 Cabernet Franc has 1% alcohol. I try not to post too many negative reviews here, but this really is not good. Everything is light: colour, aroma intensity, flavour intensity, body (water thin), finish. It truly is bone dry, and probably could use a bit of residual sugar to give it some sort of viscosity. I think I’d rather have a can of Bubly. The non-vintage Noughty Rouge Syrah from South Africa is in a different class. The nose is medium intensity with dark cherry and plum notes along with some subtle oak derived complexity (vanilla, toast, spice notes from aging in 3rd and 4th fill barrels and the use of French and American oak staves). The body is about medium, with medium + acidity, slightly grippy medium tannins, medium flavour intensity, and a short but pleasant finish. Residual sugar works out to about 28 g/L but the acidity and tannins balance that out to give a fairly dry impression. #wine #dealcoholizedwine #alcoholfree #yeg #yegwine

This wonderfully light and elevated Smoked Trout Salad with Horseradish Cream and Avocado Crema, paired with Allure Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine is ideal for a lunch table 🥂 Serves: 4 Prep time: 30 minutes SALAD: - 200 g smoked trout ribbons - 1 large cucumber, shaved into ribbons with a vegetable peeler - 100g baby asparagus spears, steamed and blanched - 80g snap peas, steamed and blanched - 3 radishes, thinly sliced/mandolined - 2 or 3 baby cucumbers, peeled and sliced into rounds - 1 tbsp (30 ml) poppy seeds - 2 sprigs of dill, picked - lemon wedges - microgreens for garnish (optional) HORESERADISH CREAM: - 60mL crème fraîche - 60 ml creamed horseradish - squeeze of lemon - salt and pepper AVO CREMA: - 1 large avocado - 1 tbsp (15 ml) crème fraîche - squeeze of lemon juice - salt and pepper HORSERADISH CREAM: Add the ingredients for the horseradish cream to a small bowl and blitz with a hand blender until smooth. NoLo? NoNoNo🙈 Very disappointed by the alcohol-free wines available, particularly the reds. Been trying a few recently. First up was the Eisberg Merlot Alcohol Free Wine (not pictured) found at Tesco for £3.50. Apparently, it started as wine and then had the alcohol removed – unfortunately everything else went with it! Next up was the Thomson & Scott Noughty Rouge Dealcoholized Red Syrah. If anything, this was probably worse. Didn’t really taste like wine and was quite sweet. At £13.95 on Amazon it was not cheap and a big mistake. Third example was the Gratien and Meyer Festillant Sparkling Sans Alcool. This was a whole lot better, quite acceptable and would purchase again. It was just £4.50 from The Wine Society and was very good value IMHO. So far, it certainly seems that NoLo red wine👎 is harder to make than white 👍 Interested to see whether looking beyond NoLo wine might bring better results. So next up is Saicho Non-Alcoholic Hojicha Sparkling Tea. If it is worth the wait, I shall report back.
