A nuchal cord, or cord wrapped around a baby’s neck, is a common complication that occurs in 15-35% of pregnancies. The incidence of nuchal cords increases with the length of gestation, from 6% at 20 weeks to 29% at 42 weeks. Nuchal cords cannot be prevented and can develop due to babies movement or excess amniotic fluid. My baby girl was born with the cord wrapped around her neck 2x and she was born at home, unassisted! Her dad pulled her out and immediately unwrapped the cord…he acted as quickly as he could and his immediate action saved her life! She was purple when she came out and she did not cry immediately. However, she was immediately placed on my chest and even nursed right away…so in addition to dads quick thinking and acting, immediate skin-to-skin and uninterrupted nursing all played a major role in her absolute perfection 💜. It is vital to educate yourself on ALL of the what ifs…an excellent way to do this is by reading, researching, taking a class or two and/or hiring a certified doula to guide you through it all. Palatine postpartum night shift #6. I arrived at 9PM. We talked for a bit and then the parents went upstairs to bed. I got busy immediately on some tasks since the baby was already sleeping. By 12:30AM, I had made some cinnamon rolls for the family (it was a request), the baby had a feeding from his mother, the baby was burped. He was put back in his bassinet. A load of clothes were folded, the dishwasher was emptied, the microwave was cleaned, and the stovetop was sparkling. The baby woke up every 2 hours after that for nourishment from mom. Once mom was done, she would bring him back to me. I would burp him, and hold him upright for a bit. Then, he would be placed back in his bassinet. At 6AM 🕕, I left for my drive back to Wisconsin and my own kiddos. I’ll be doing 58 hours a week between both families for the month of June. I will work on my birthday and the night of my anniversary; that’s how this industry goes. My 21-year-old son asked me yesterday if I get PTO. I couldn’t help but laugh. No. We don’t get PTO No. We don’t get IMRF No. We don’t get benefits No. We don’t have Health Insurance through our employer No. I don’t get sick pay when I don’t feel good. No. We don’t get most of the things other jobs do. We DO get the satisfaction that we are helping. We also get the satisfaction that the fourth trimester is better with an extra set of hands. Upon my arrival, I found her calmly embracing each wave with her husband by her side. After about an hour, as she approached transition, I provided counter pressure and heat to help alleviate the intensity. Soon, I called for the midwives. She entered the pool to navigate through transition, floating gracefully and releasing all tension, allowing her baby to descend peacefully. When the urge to push became undeniable, she moved out of the tub to maintain control and beautifully birthed her baby boy. Ashley made the waves look effortless. A beautiful homebirth experience. Fun fact: 🎂 Baby Nolan is my Birthday Buddy! It’s such a fun experience to have one of your doula babies to share the day with. Getting back to it! I’ve been slowly dipping my toes back into work life, attending birth worker meetups, holding virtual consultations, and today I had my CPR re-certification. I will say, doing CPR on this baby doll gave me a whole lot more feels than usual, now that I have my own baby at home. I pray I never ever have to use these skills in my life, but so glad I have them!
Today is an often forgotten day in both regular society and the birth community. Today is Birth Mother’s Day. It is celebrated every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Today is a day to recognize, support, and love the women who chose adoption. Their stories are vast, complicated, joyful and sad, and all of the in between. I don’t want to speak for those women here because I have not experienced adoption placement myself. But unless a true emergency (where they wouldn't be having a conversation with you), time is your best assest. Start by having a conversation asking your provider these questions: 🅱️ Benefits: What are they? 🆁 Risks: Any to consider? 🅰️ Alternatives: What are your options? 🤔 Intuition: What's your gut saying? 🚫 Nothing: What if you wait? When I started supporting births 5 years ago, I would leave and feel a deep pull to worship and thank God the entire drive home. It took months for me to identify why though… what I was witnessing was holy and deserving of reverence. The act of preparation, be it labor or preparing for a cesarean, there is an undertow of expectancy that increases every minute that goes by. It culminates with that baby’s skin hitting the air and new life. If you know me then you know my journey of birthing my own children several times unassisted with just my spouse and I mainly. I’ve had the support of family and friends each time and I believe it played a big roll in the mental aspect throughout my labor experience. Just the presence of them was enough motivation to feel like I can do this! I believe having that kind of support not only then but throughout pregnancy plays a big roll in a woman’s confidence who’s about to have a child. Throughout my pregnancies I’ve learned so much about the benefits of holistic living as well as physical, mental and emotional, and nutritional support for a pregnant mama and her partner. This kind of support can really change the outcome of your pregnancy and can be crucial to mama and baby. For years I have been supporting other woman in their pregnancy journeys with knowledge and hands on support! With my background of being a trainer, a yoga instruction, certified chakra healer, meditation, nutritionist, and mother of 6; I have finally decided to to become a DOULA! I’m a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator and postpartum sealing ceremony master. I work with families all the way through parenthood starting in pregnancy, supporting people in birth and taking care of them afterward, wrapping up our connection time with a postpartum sealing ritual. My journey into doula work began in 2010, with my own experience of motherhood. As I was pregnant with my second child I had an urgent call to revise my first complicated and emotionally pulling experience of birth. That’s how my interests in holistic childbirth education and birth story healing awoke. I ended up studying trauma-informed care approach and postpartum rituals performance around the world. Now as a mother of four, I recognize the joys and challenges of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery.
