I have this condition for 7 years. Its quite rare and people often think its because i am overweight, Its actually to do with the brain. My brain cannot connect enough during sleep to keep me breathing and many times in the night it stops for periods of over 10 seconds with no breathing at all. This condition actually caused a lot of my extra weight. Its hard to explain the difference between CSA and obstuctive sleep apnea (the more common problem ) It currently is causing problems with atrial fibrillation on top of everything else. Last night we went back to where Logi bears life began 🐻 Oh how surreal it felt to be back at the place that he was born & where they nurtured him with the best care until he was strong enough to move back closer to home 🏠 We spent the night at Addenbrooke’s for an overnight sleep study & it didn’t give us the best results for our little bear but at least we can now get him the help he needs. Oxygen will continue overnight as without it his sleep apnea is extremely severe with 50/60 events per hour with oxygen levels dropping to the low 70’s. Now we need to get to the bottom of if there is a bigger cause than just prematurity which means an mri, an echocardiogram, blood tests & genetic testing all need to be done. We just arrived at sleep study #3 (or 4?)! Huddy has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which means his breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep due to a blockage of his upper airway. OSA is common in children with hypochondroplasia. At these overnight sleep studies, Huddy is hooked up to a machine that reads his brain activity, breathing rate, oxygen levels, etc. This helps the doctors see how many times he stops breathing each hour, and whether the episodes are caused by his airway (OSA) or brain (central sleep apnea). Huddy had his first sleep study when he was about 1 month old. That was when he was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and placed on oxygen therapy. Since then, he’s had sleep studies every 6 months or so to monitor his apnea and see if his oxygen dose (or flow rate) needs to change. As his body has gotten bigger and stronger over time, his oxygen dose has decreased. He is now on 1/4 L during sleep, which is a pretty low dose. At tonight’s study, we are checking to see if he can come off the oxygen completely! Throwback to this 5 year old cutie during a sleep study, thirteen years ago today. It showed up in my Fbook memories the exact moment I was on hold with one of Avery’s specialists. I was calling to discuss her recent uptick in sleep apnea episodes. We’re not sure why they’ve increased in frequency and severity but man, it’s disarming. Since her recent nocturnal seizure, this kiddo has been my reluctant slumber buddy. And when you sleep next to somebody, you can’t help but notice their breath. Or lack thereof. It doesn’t happen every night (or maybe I don’t always hear it?). And some nights are worse than others. Last night was particularly unnerving. There was a 45 minute period of… no breath, a shove from me, then a sharp gasp for air and resumed breathing from Avery for a few minutes, and repeat. This isn’t normal. And definitely not something we can endure indefinitely. Anyone have experience with this? I read about a new procedure that involves an implant. But it sounds invasive and scary. We also need to determine the underlying cause. We suspect it’s obstructive, but as we’ve learned, rare kiddos keep us on our toes. This could also be central apnea (neurological) or complex sleep apnea syndrome. We’ve had a referral in to see an ENT since last spring. The wait is a year. A year. We tried to get in to see a multi disciplinary team at Sick Kids but they rejected our request. They said by the time they get down the list to us, Avery will be an adult, and no longer eligible for treatment at a children’s hospital. 😔 Hopefully we’ll get in for a sleep study soon. Or, get our hands on a home test device. Do we have this option in Canada?? According to my doctor I have very serious severe sleep apnea and my events per hour are at 50 to 49 events per hour. That means I stop breathing for 10-30 seconds 50 time's per hour. Last night I got 2.37 hours of sleep and I stopped breathing about 49 times in one hour. Hopefully I can improve this but for now my health depends on me using this machine and I am blessed to have it. Don't know what would happen if I didn't. Life with a child with additional and/or medical complex needs doesn't always look the same at Christmas and that's ok!! Yesterday morning we went downstairs to see what Santa had brung. Jake shared the bed with Aneya Christmas eve as currently his bed is in our front room while awaiting for our extension and we knew father Christmas wouldn't come if he was in the same room as the tree 🎄 so he slept with Aneya. We went downstairs after opening stockings and Jake had a horrible seizure. So once it finished we put him into his bed to carry on the excitement with Aneya who was obviously excited to see the presents. Jake needed to rest so we just carried on doing the opening with him in bed ❤️ He was still included, even if he was not interested in the presents at all lol it just looked different. 12/12/23 ~ Sleep Study and Respiratory Review Anyone who has helped their child through a sleep study will know the awkward pressure you put on yourself to get them to sleep ‘peacefully’ in 4 sterile walls with a million wires hanging off their head and torso… it’s the worst! This is Daisy’s third sleep study but unfortunately as she gets older and more aware of what’s going on, it gets harder. She fights the nurses setting her up and then fights me to go to sleep. We finally got there in the end last night with only a few wakes and resettles. But the results are what I expected - she has severe obstructive sleep apnea alongside her central sleep apnea 💔 This is common with Apert bubs. She had been managing pretty well but the last 6 months she’s declined rapidly. You can see in the picture of her oximetry - all of the blue lines that drop are when her oxygen desaturated. Now it’s discussions between her respiratory and ENT teams. She will need to start CPAP for all of her sleeps so we’ve got our practice kit but unfortunately the sleep clinic closes now until mid Jan next year so won’t start it until then. We’re back to see ENT next week to discuss airway procedures to also help the obstructions. She’s had pneumonia three times in the last year so when they do her airway procedure they’ll also do a Bronchoscopy to check her lungs. I will say it time and time again, Apert airways are the worst!
