A wonderfully original and emotional horror film. @janedoesnotknow’s @isawthetvglow is a visually captivating and narratively satisfying @a24 picture that wrestles with many different themes, making it a deeply human and poignant piece. It’s one of the best films of the year. In her sophomore directorial effort, Schoenbrun proves that she’s someone to look out for in the future. She directs the hell out of “I Saw the TV Glow”, giving it a distinct visual palette and a very personal story. Its neon drenched dreamy aesthetic is just gorgeous to look at. But not only is the film beautifully framed, it’s also an intimate portrait that shines light on the trans perspective and our attachment to works of fiction. “I Saw the TV Glow” so perfectly illustrates the positives and negative aspects of fandoms in such a unique and intelligent way. With a Lynchian eye that seamlessly blurs the line between reality and fantasy, Jane Schoenbrun tells the story of an unexpected friendship that feels so new and fresh. Breaking convention with ease, she created a delightfully idiosyncratic picture that was unique to her vision. @standup4justice and @briiiiiiiiiig both shine as the two leads, providing the film with its emotional center. They carefully navigate through this character study together with nuanced performances that speak volumes, allowing the disturbing nature of the film to rear its head. It’s wonderful, especially as a filmmaker, to see Jane Schoenbrun swing for the fences with such a small budget. The creative risks “I Saw the TV Glow” took created a specific atmosphere that we haven’t seen before. Indie filmmaking at its best, fearlessly taking the art of film to new places. After much delay, I’m so glad to have seen “I Saw the TV Glow” in theaters. Its beauty and horror are best experienced on the big screen as you’re completely enveloped by the neon glow of its visual language. A fantastic piece of horror cinema. Everyone go see “I Saw the TV Glow” in theaters now! #isawthetvglow #A24 #janeschoenbrun #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine @iamianforeman @helenahoward_officially @freddurst #danielledeadwyler #film #movie #review #ianforeman #helenahoward #freddurst

I Saw The TV Glow tells the tale of Owen, a socially awkward and asthmatic teenager who befriends another socially awkward individual, Maddy. The two bond over their love of the cult TV show "The Pink Opaque." From there, their obsession with the show turns into an existential journey that blends the lines between reality and fantasy, causing both to question themselves and the world around them. Firstly, I need to applaud Jane Schoenbrun's brilliant direction as they imbue the film with constant discomfort and uneasiness. They had me transfixed with the clashing imagery of neon and darkness with the palpable undertones of loneliness. The aesthetic and vibes of this film made for a gorgeous yet haunting cinematic experience. The world they made was immersive and seductive and lures you in like a siren song, but you can't stay there for the sake of your own sanity. The horror of I Saw The TV Glow lies within its themes and the behaviors of its characters. I Saw The TV Glow is an intimate story about identity, purpose, connection, escapism, self-discovery, and the queer experience. It's is about two individuals so unsatisfied and unsure of themselves that they strive to find purpose in anything. It's about two individuals who live as husks longing to fill themselves with substance, yet they are unsure of what they're filling themselves with. The unhappiness that takes place from having to live a fake life haunts an individual who can't rightfully express themselves. Changing your name or location isn't enough to cease the comforting discomfort. Your identity is your prison. The performances of Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine exquisitely express the descent into madness shown in the film. They showed tremendous versatility and provided two of my favorite performances of the year. Both of them play socially awkward characters so unhappy with themselves that they search for anything to fill their souls with anything that resembles joy.  I Saw The TV Glow is unlike any film I've seen before. It's paranoid, honest, bleak, and somber. The performances are great, and the aesthetic is perfect. It's the film of a generation. Final Rating: 5/5

I SAW THE TV GLOW (2024) dir. Jane Schoenbrun I just watched this movie in theaters about a week ago and wow I loved it! I’ve never seen a film capture the nostalgia and aesthetic of 90s television in this particular way, while still maintaining its distinct style and color scheme throughout. The film sucks you in pretty immediately and becomes a trippy, fascinating experience. Plus, the MUSIC!!!!! The soundtrack is made up of all original songs (most film soundtracks only have about one or two originals) and is said to center around the films themes of memory and what could have been. Fun fact: the fictional show “The Pink Opaque” that the film centers around is named after a 1986 compilation album by Cocteau Twins. Though I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I definitely don’t think it’s perfect. There’s a bit of messiness and confusion that comes with the story and I feel like some of the beats could’ve been moved way up in the story to add in more horror elements. If you haven’t seen the movie, I doubt any of this makes sense! But if you have watched it, hmu cause I wanna talk about it more teehee! I wish The Pink Opaque was a real show! #film #isawthetvglow #janeschoenbrun #justicesmith #a24 #90snostalgia #pinkopaque #brigettelundypaine #cinematography #filmaesthetic

5/28/2024, 3:35:12 AM

As the credits rolled for I Saw the TV Glow, I was left with many more questions than answers. I’m not sure I totally understood this film, but it’s a bold story that is certainly meant to be felt more than understood.. I think calling this film horror is a little misleading, but at the same time it’s one of the most unsettling movies I’ve seen this year. It’s going for more of an existential dread type of horror, and I think you have to prepare yourself for that if you are going into this expecting a standard horror film. The story follows Owen, a teenager just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack. I Saw the TV Glow is a mixed experience for me, on one hand I connected with the story of our main character feeling like they are missing out on their true potential, like everyday is just slipping by and blending together, not a bad life necessarily, but a life of regrets, unfilled dreams, and lost ambitions.. It’s scary to see a film so vividly portray the horror of mediocrity, and growing older but never wiser. Just existing in a limbo state, waiting for the inevitable. On the other hand, I really liked the concept of the blurring between the real world and this television world within the film. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s ever explored enough, and it’s left so open ended that I’m still not sure what to make of it. When they do try to explain bits and pieces of the reality vs TV world more, it’s done over lengthy monologues that feel more like exposition dumps. It’s not bad storytelling, but I think with this film’s visuals and aesthetics it should have shown more, rather than just have the characters occasionally turn to the camera and monologue. Overall I Saw the TV Glow is an ambitious story that felt a little too ambiguous in the end. It won’t be for everyone, but it’s worth experiencing if you are intrigued by its dread inducing premise.

What a beautiful movie. There’s a lot to unpack with I Saw the TV Glow (2024), but I’m going to keep this review as brief as I can. My reason for trying to keeping this review short, is because this is one of those films that you really just need to experience. Knowing too much about it before going in could potentially hurt the viewing experience, especially because this movie is on another level. I haven’t seen a movie since A24’s The Whale (2022) that made me think about life, its experiences and purpose on such a humane level. What’s important to know about this flick, is it explores the importance of knowing who you are. It’s important not to conform to what everyone wants you to be, or be what they think you should become. This movie, while exploring some of life’s most important struggles, has so many other elements that further push its uniqueness. I particularly enjoyed how immersive this film was, particularly in the first half of the movie. I felt like I was on the bleachers with Owen and Maddy, so much so that I could almost feel the wind blowing through the trees. I also loved the dynamic soundtrack, the incredible performances and the symbolism throughout. With so much jam-packed in this movie, particularly with its’ important messages like dealing with loss, lack of self-confidence, understanding your true identity and so much else, the movie never feels exhausting or tedious in any way. Just another reason to experience this movie. I Saw the TV Glow (2024) is an easy 9/10 for me. It took me over a day to give this movie a solid rating, because there was so much to take in and think about. Check it out, another A24 success ✨ #isawthetvglow #a24 #drama #movies #movie #film #comedy #philosophic #understanding #love #thewhale #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine #bluray #dvd #4k #4kultrahd #immersive #arthouse #symbolism #symbolic #tv #friendship #loss #confidence #tvshows #tvshow #janeschoenbrun #comingofage #meloncholy

I Saw the TV Glow is a movie that works on many different frequencies, some of which the viewer might never have known they could hear and feel. The film begins in 1996, and it follows the life of Owen from adolescence to adulthood. Owen feels out of touch with himself, but while in high school, he finds a connection with his schoolmate Maddy and their shared obsession with a TV show titled The Pink Opaque. What this connection means to both of them, and how they both react to it over the course of their lives, is what I Saw the TV Glow explores in a beautiful and devastating way. This is the type of film that won’t work for everyone, but for those it touches, it can be a profound experience that will stick with them for a very long time. 🍿 #goodmovie #horrormovie #isawthetvglow #justicesmith #janeschoenbrun #horrorfilm #cinephile #queerhorror #queermovies #horrormovies #horrorcommunity #horrorgram #horrorreviews #horrorfan #horrorlover #horrornerd #newmovie #movielover #movies #moviegeek #brigettelundypaine #cinematography #movielovers #horrormoviefan #queerart #movienight #90s #tvlover #moodyaesthetic #cinema

I Saw the TV Glow feels like an elegiac journey through ‘90s nostalgia, wandering the ruins of memory. It sleepwalks through a hazy past of pop culture melancholy. It’s a funeral for an isolated, lonely childhood with comfort found in front of a television. I saw a version of myself in the movie, watching wrestling in my grandparents’ spare bedroom. Quiet and hypnotized. Alone. I Saw the TV Glow is stylistically confident and carefully paced. It moves gently through fog. Neon in darkness. The vision is fully formed. Dreamy. Mesmerizing. Devastating. It lovingly and faithfully recreates the kind of TV show that might’ve existed in the ‘90s, full of lore and monsters. Degraded video. Handwritten labels. Familiar faces appear briefly throughout the film like nostalgia personified. The movie is something like Channel Zero with shades of David Cronenberg—a Millennial Videodrome, but more than that. It’s a somber and stunning mood piece—a kind of poetry. I know I Saw the TV Glow is an allegory for the trans experience. It may not be my own experience, but it’s nevertheless powerful to see such an artfully made, purposeful film playing in theaters nationwide. It feels important. It is important. Maybe it’s not a funeral after all, but a beginning. #ISawTheTVGlow #JaneSchoenbrun #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #A24 #ThePinkOpaque

I knew I would like I Saw The TV Glow. The nostalgia of a suburban childhood—summer nights spent walking in the middle of empty, silent streets, drop offs at the end of your friends’ driveways, the feeling of wet dew and bits of grass sticking to your ankles—rose up from the opening sequence like heat rising from pavement. I settled in to watch as if I were back on the futon in the den of my childhood home, the stack of computer games off to the side of the desktop computer we all shared.  I also felt reassured to learn that director @janedoesnotknow was, like me, clearly a Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network kid—when we see the two main characters tuning in to their favorite show on the Young Adults Network, a little colorful splat sits in the bottom right corner behind the network symbol. This movie made me think about Courage the Cowardly Dog over and over and over again—they’re both grotesque, horrifying, expressive and highly emotional. ——————————————- Full review is at the link in our bio, or subscribe to the yearning.substack.com to get them sent directly to your inbox 💌 #theyearning #isawthetvglow #brigettelundypaine #janeschoenbrun #justicesmith #writing #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #substack #substackonig #substacknewsletter #substackwriter #queerfilm #tvreview #queerwriter #rupaulsdragrace

I Saw The TV Glow (2024) <<>> I'm gonna be thinking about this one for a while. This isn't going to hit for a lot of people but it did for me. If you grew up in the 90s watching Are You Afraid of the Dark, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this flick has put a bullseye on your heart. A haunting trans/queer/outsider allegory that made me laugh and question and squirm in the theater, and want to cry when I got home. Strange and beautiful. Great score and soundtrack. It's either made for you, or it isn't. “Maybe you’re like Isabel, afraid of what’s inside of you.” Today’s pseudo polarizing flic was #ISawTheTVGlow about two lonely classmates that bond over a TV show. One thing you can’t say about this film is it ain’t original. An experimental journal like flic about kids channeling and trying to accept their inner self. My first impression was it was like a feature length segment of #LiquidTelevision. Hmmm. I liked parts of this movie. Some not so much. It literally was hit and miss moments. But gotta give director #JaneSchoenburn credit for keeping it real and a thanks to #A24 for letting the message out. Gonna be vague on the premise just because it really can be a different vibe to different people. Gotta shout out #comingofagefilms. One thing I do love about these films are those moments… those little moments that you take with you forever. It’s always fun how people portray them moments in movies. Anyways if you’re looking for an offbeat movie with a strong artistic vision, give this one a watch. I like these challenging movies, going to give this one a 7.4 out 10. Two points for the soundtrack. Movie stars #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #PhoebeBridgers #ConnerOMalley #IanForeman #HelenaHoward #FredDurst #moviereview #ISawTheTVGlowReview

I Saw the TV Glow: 3.5/5 Weird stuff. It captures a childhood nostalgia really well and the disturbing elements give me a “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” kind of vibe in a good way. Some of the moments hit really really hard. The first big miss of this movie, though, is the casting. We go from a literal child in 7th grade to two years later where he has aged to a 28-year-old Justice Smith with a fully hairy chest and 5 o’clock shadow. Completely ridiculous. The other big miss is the ending. It needed something either satisfying or thought-provoking. Instead, it just sort of ends as soon as it gets going. It feels more like it’s figuring itself out along the way rather than a focused, intentional story being told. I’m glad I saw it for the ideas and the atmosphere and I really wanted to love it, but you don’t need to go out of your way to see it. #isawthetvglow #janeschoenbrun #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine #psychologicalhorror #surreal #supernatural #teenagers #friendship #obsession #mediacriticism #comingofage #a24 #indiefilm #newrelease #mustsee #dark #mystery #moviereview #film #moviereviewer #moviereviews #hollywood #reviews #reviewer #cinema #movies #review #movie

Recently watched: I Saw the TV Glow (2024). - “I think I was born bored. I think I was born blue. I think I was born wanting more. I think I was born. Already missing you.” - Whether you’re trans, queer, or bi-curious, I think there’s A LOT to relate to in this film. If you’re straight or identify as something else, I still think there’s A LOT to love about this film. Growing up and having trouble making friends, I just turned inward. A lot of this is being on the Autistic, but I was obsessed with movies and television. Epic stories like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and, especially, Star Wars were worlds I could most relate to. I found meaning and purpose in these stories, and this translated easily into television. I went through phases of going back and rewatching certain shows and movies, now seeing how not as grand or special some of these things are. Then years later, I watch them again, and accept them for what they are. I love them all over again, knowing elements have aged. This applies to every aspect of film, television, music, games, and all forms of entertainment. Nostalgia isn’t by itself a bad thing, but it can be destructive if we choose to live there and never face reality. I find this interesting because being a filmmaker and on the spectrum, movies are ALL I think about every day. I’m not kidding. If it’s not movies, it’s Star Wars, my first love. That being said, I still think I have enough understanding to know the difference between reality and my reality…I think. There’s many other things I want to say, but I’m not comfortable yet going into it. I loved Jane Schoenbrun’s previous micro-budget film, “We’re all Going To The World’s Fair”, and she’s proven here they’re a director with a voice that deserves to be heard. Important note: Justice Smith is incredible here. He gives a very heartbreaking performance that I found a lot of relatability to. He should not be left out of this coming year’s awards talk. This film feels like a blood relative to Blue Velvet and Inland Empire, and that’s a good thing. - #movie #movies #film #films #cinema #cinephile #2024 #ISawtheTVGlow #JaneSchoenbrun #EmmaStone #A24 #A24Films #JusticeSmith

Schoenbrun brilliantly uses nostalgia and fandom as a vehicle to explore the adolescent mind and it makes for one of the most unique and thoughtfully crafted coming-of-age films I’ve seen. It manages to be both devastating and empowering in the same breath- its ability to balance these two tones feels all too true to the teenage experience. 5/5 #reviews #review #film #films #filmreview #filmreviews #movie #moviereview #moviereviews #geosquickreviews #gqr #a24 #isawthetvglow #janeschoenbrun #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine

I Saw the TV Glow ~ PG-13 ~ 2024 ~ #JaneSchoenbrun #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #IanForeman #HelenaHoward #LindseyJordan #DanielleDeadwyler #FredDurst Two social outcasts form an unlikely bond over a science-fiction television series. While A24 is the one studio I could trust to output a quality film with tons of bizarre, unconventional decisions, something about the trailers for this movie still had me skeptical. This put those reservations to rest pretty quick. Don’t get me wrong, this will have plenty of haters who can’t get past some of the eccentricities in the structure of this story. That cause for concern is not unwarranted. Personally speaking however, this sparked a degree of awe that I can only call unexplainable. Not since The Neon Demon have I seen a film that mesmerized me so much while I still didn’t fully understand it off one viewing. The first half of this movie is an awkwardly charming friendship drama, coming across almost like an edgier Napoleon Dynamite. The second half goes ballistically off course & incites a wide range of emotions to reflect the character’s views & perspectives. There is a handful of moments & imagery that, while not explicitly graphic, resulted in so much discomfort that I’m honestly shocked this got by the MPA with a PG-13 rating. The soundtrack is fantastic, towing that line of vibrance while also carrying an ominous undertone. Justice Smith turns in easily the best performance of his career thus far, & his co-star Brigette Lundy-Paine is commendable as well. There are moments when the pacing slows down with an excessively long scene & the dialogue can sometimes be a bit dull, but truthfully everything about this movie fascinates me. I’m confident I’ll be revisiting this many times over the years & constantly viewing it in new perspectives. There’s nothing that excites me more than a movie I can’t stop talking about, & this leaves plenty up for conversation. 4.5/5 #ISawTheTVGlow #newmovie #newmovies #a24 #experimentalfilm #scifi #tvshow #tvshows #fanbase #unlikelyfriends #offbeat #hiddengems #movie #film #moviereview

“I Saw The TV Glow” is fascinating. The story is open to multiple interpretations, from a more literal #fantasy one to a surprisingly effective #allegorical. #JusticeSmith and #BrigetteLundyPaine are subdued yet strong and #JaneSchoenbrun‘s script/direction are assured. 3.8/5. It’s an odd duck whose wild swings and implications won’t float all boats, but I’ll definitely remember this through the year and think it will resonate strongly with many, especially social outcasts. If you like weirder stuff, check it out if you can

Didn’t make it down to the theater last weekend and that felt like sacrelige so today I made sure I hopped on the bus and headed down to check out Jane Schoenbrun’s compelling, batshit, haunting, and truly jarring latest feature, I Saw the TV Glow. #ISawTheTVGlow #JaneSchoenbrun #2024 #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #HelenaHoward #FredDurst #DanielleDeadwyler #LindseyJordan #AmberBenson #ConnerOMalley #EmmaPortner #IanForeman #MichaelCMarrona #DannyTamberelli #SloppyJane #HaleyDahl #PhoebeBridgers #KristinaEsfandiari #KingWoman #AmericanCinema #A24 #A24Films #EricKYue #AlexG #SofiMarshall #AMCTheaters #film #cinephile

“I think I like tv shows” 3/10. I wasn’t really hyped about this but saw people talking about it and getting excited. I liked that the kid from ‘let the right one in’ series is in here. The movie’s visually striking, with vibrant neon colors, a hallmark of A24 I think. However, I didn’t find it particularly captivating; it seems like something you need a prior interest in to engage with early on. The plot revolves around two outcast kids with an unusual interest, and while the visuals were compelling, the story itself didn’t hold my attention. It has a creepy ambience to it. I liked when they met up later, things get more interesting from there. But ultimately though, it felt like an artsy project without enough substance. The movie dragged, and the characters didn’t have much to them and lacked a compelling storyline. Although it became more interesting in the final third and is undeniably unique, it just wasn’t memorable for me. The movie felt like it had more to offer visually than anything else. I’m sure some will like it but to me Justice Smith’s taken two L’s this year; it was better than “The American Society of Magical Negroes” though. #a24 #isawthetvglow #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine #atypical #caseygardner #fivelstewart #atypicalnetflix #atypicaledit #hunterschafer #cazzie #netflix #1300 #1300hrs #movies #dungeonsanddragons #drake #chrispine #michellerodriguez #lgbt #cinema #hughgrant #sophialillis #regejeanpage #kendricklamar #thegetdown #shameikmoore #thegetdownnetflix #lgbtq #jadensmith

I SAW THE TV GLOW, i loved this film and I can’t Recommend this film highly enough. It’s a film where not only about the filmmaking but the experience. As afterward it feels like a religious experience. This film Destroyed me and made me feel devastated in a good way. Had me deep in thoguts after wards still thinking about it. I don’t know if I can ever do this film Justice in writing or talking about it. As I know emotionally or even intellectually I can be right or express my feelings exactly about this masterpiece. I purposely tried to know very little about it so that I knew only a few details and didn’t know where it was going or what to expect? But was willing to go wherever it took Me, come what may This film feels aimed For any outside or misfit whoever felt or feels misplaced or like they didn’t belong. Who is struggling in life and most importantly in an Identity? For anyone Made to feel like every move and decision is a mistake and there is something not quite right about you. Never seem To fit in with any crowd even the ones it seems Like You should. How others seem to be on a different wavelength than you. Who just don’t Or can’t get it. This film might not be for everyone, but it’s Beautiful full of heart and tragedy. Full of emotion. The film is alive with so many questions, theories and realities. Almost every shot is filled with imagantion, depth, style and creativity. Thought and passion has obviously been put into each facet, Every moment felt filled with emotions. Another masterpiece from writer/director Jane Schoenbrun @janedoesnotknow who’s previous film WE ARE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR. Was just as strong and surprising. It will also exists in a nostalgia itself. as there are quite a few cameos from people who were popular and recognizable to those who came of age in the 1990’s. As well as the pop culture on display and definitely the soundtrack No spoilers, it’s a film Best to go into blind #Isawthetvglow #Masterpiece #a24 #bigscreen #Movietheater #Janeschoenbrun #Justicesmith #Highlyrecommend #Bestoftheyear #Brigettelundypaine #Helenahoward #Lgbtq+

"I Saw the TV Glow" ... a movie that gave me an excuse to talk to Danny Tamberelli, aka Little Pete from "The Adventures of Pete & Pete"! This is a film any child and teenager of the '90s should definitely see ... along with everyone else. Fruitopia! Inflatable planetarium in the school gym! "Buffy" and SNICK-inspired programming! New Jersey doing New Jersey things! I have to see it again sometime. What an experience. Expanded to theaters nationwide today. ****Link to interview, behind the scenes gems in stories and bio**** Photos: @spencerpazer, @A24, Fotos International via Getty, Nickelodeon #ISawtheTVGlow #JaneSchoenbrun #movie #film #director #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #ThePinkOpaque #trans #transgender #nonbinary #dissociation #NJ #NewJersey #Jersey TheAdventuresofPeteandPete #DannyTamberelli #BuffytheVampireSlayer #BTVS #Buffy #SNICK #Nickelodeon #AreYouAfraidoftheDark #Fruitopia #MrSprinkly #VHS #TV #VoidHigh #Verona #CedarGrove #A24 @janedoesnotknow @standup4justice @briiiiiiiiiig @dannytamberelli @iamianforeman @__themfatale @verona_high_school_athletics @njmotionpictureandtv @funplexparks @pumpituprp @saintapnj @keansburg_amusementpark

I Saw the TV Glow is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, starring Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine. ————————————————————— Shy Owen is quietly trying to get through life when he meets the openly gay freshman Maddy who introduces him to the TV show ‘The Pink Opaque’. As the years go by the two start to have trouble telling real life from the tv show. ————————————————————— This movie had an interesting affect on me. One that a movie has never had on me until this point. Usually if I cry at a movie it will be during the movie or as the credits are rolling. But for this film I didn’t start crying until I was in my car on the way home collecting my thoughts. While I am not always the biggest fan of this style of movie that borders on surrealism this movie profoundly influenced me. This story can speak to cis/het people and I’d encourage those who identify that way to seek this movie out but this movie is uniquely tied to the LGBTQ+ community. To have a movie so perfectly capture what many in the community do by attaching ourselves to a piece of media because it is where we feel most seen is something that rocked me. This idea is brought to life by beautiful direction and the specific use of color, sound, and soundtrack. And hats off to Justice and Bridgette who nailed their performances. If anything it’s a tad too much for general audiences and has some pacing difficulties. ————————————————————— All in all I Saw the TV Glow is a triumph of modern filmmaking Recommended Rating: A- #movie #movies #a24 #isawthetvglow #justicesmith #brigettelundypaine #janeschoenbrun

2024 Movies #225 I Saw the TV Glow - ★★★ (2024) Directed by Jane Schoenbrun 65/100 How badly do you want to experience a nightmare? That's the question that I Saw the TV Glow, the second feature film from Jane Schoenbrun, creator of We're All Going to the World's Fair, doesn't actually raise, but it's the experience it proposes to the audience. Set initially in the 90's, the film follows Owen, a stalled teenager who finds solace in a television show called The Pink Opaque. Thanks to the show Owen forms a bond with Maddy. For both the show represents an escape from their troubled home lives and their social shortcomings. Once again Schoenbrun explores themes of loneliness, depression, identity and the desire for escapism. Heavily charged with topics of queer representation and racial issues, yet the main focus for this film's approach is fueled by surrealism, depicting it as a commentary on nostalgia and pop culture. Especially in terms of its emotional resonance. The journey is bizarre and ambitious, but the narrative is extremely disjointed, the direction falters at various moments and the director seems to be more invested in enhancing the conceptual profoundness of the story rather than aiming for a more efficient execution. I applaud the points I enjoyed and the eeriness of some of its passages, but I Saw the TV Glow never delivers the definitive punch. We are perpetually connected to the past times from which we come from and I Saw the TV Glow is another exploration of adolescent disillusionment, augmented by the reality-altering power of the media when you take refuge in it. Its limitations seem to be self-imposed or perhaps the director was unable to give a more crucial complexity to the narrative, but the path they're carving out is a good one. This film is a good example. Now they just need to take the leap to the stage where lasting impressions are really made. #ISawtheTVGlow #2024Movies #JaneSchoenbrun #JusticeSmith #BrigetteLundyPaine #IanForeman #HelenaHoward #LindseyJordan #DanielleDeadwyler #A24 #FruitTree #SmudgeFilms #HypnicJerk #AccessEntertainment
