This is a two part Dharma Talk from The Lotus Sutra, which is a foundational piece in the Buddhist canon. We will be reading from the translation by Gene Reeves. This week we will be exploring Chapter 15, entitled 'Springing Up From The Earth', the Buddha of this Eon Shakyamuni is delivering a sermon from the top of Vulture peak to a massive assembly of beings from different star systems and dimensions. When they ask, “Can we help spread this Teaching?” The Buddha replies, “No, I already have Bodhisattvas here in this Earth to spread the Teachings.” Once spoken, countless Bodhisattvas emerge from underneath the Earth. There are Four Great Leaders of the assembly that correspond to the familiar Four Bodhisattva Vows that we recite at the end of every service. The story shows how many ancestors of this Earth there are, and how we are the Bodhisattvas the Buddha is speaking of, not needing to rely on any outside force to save ourselves. It is a reminder of the power we all have within to plant the seeds of goodness and to nurture them. #EnergyAndWisdom #May27 Raising money for the starving, first by recording #BandAid at #Christmas this year and then by sLiveAid's international concerts in 1985, he acted, albeit briefly, as the embodiment of the #BodhisattvaWonderfulSound ( #Myo'on ) which alleviates suffering through music and the arts. While we cannot act quite as spectacularly, we can all act as incarnations of these great bodhisattvas when we decide to use our personal skills and talents to help others.This is a very important point to remember, as it helps explain some of the more esoteric aspects of #Buddhism. For example, the #LotusSutra describes a time when #ShakyamuniBuddha, having finished preaching the #Law at a huge assembly included great bodhisattvas such as the #MedicineKing and #Maitreya, repeatedly incites them to protect and propagate the Law after the death of he. Of course everyone shouts their assent to this request, but suddenly #Shakyamuni says, "Desist, godly men! You don't need to protect and embrace this #Sutra." The earth opens up and out of it arises a host of wonderful bodhisattvas, more numerous than the sands of sixty thousand #Ganges rivers, which no one in the assembly had ever seen before. These are the #BodhisattvasoftheEarth, led by four bodhisattvas even more admirable than the others: sHigherPractices, sUnlimitedPractices, #PurePractices and #FirmPractices. It is to them, and specifically to #HigherPractices, that sShakyamuni entrusts the task of expounding the #LotusSutra in the distant future, on the #LastDayoftheLaw. From people who are saved to people who save others #May14 President Ikeda writes: «Each of us, in the course of his #life, is faced with certain circumstances or situations that, like it or not, he has to face. Sometimes it is incredibly hard and difficult trials or suffering. However, there is the #supremewayofexistence, which allows us not only to understand that there is undoubtedly a profound meaning in the fact of being assailed by this #karma which, precisely because it is ours, we are able to face, but it also helps us to consider this #karma as a " #mission". This way is represented by the original life (without beginning, Japanese ganjo) of the #BodhisattvasoftheEarth who, from the time without beginning, have made the vow to be born into the world of saha in the evil age of #theLatterDayoftheLaw and to propagate the Lotus Sutra ”(forthcoming in BS 195). “ #Thethreethousandrealmsinasinglemomentoflife” is classified into two as the theoretical principle and the actual embodiment of this principle. These are respectively termed the theoretical three thousand realms in a single moment of life and the actual three thousand realms in a single moment of life. The theoretical principle is based on the theoretical teaching of #theLotusSutra, which expounds the equality of #Buddhahood and #thenineworlds. Both, it points out, are manifestations of the true aspect. The theoretical teaching also reveals the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds based on the principle that persons of the two vehicles, who were denied #Buddhahood in the provisional teachings, also possess innate Buddhahood and can attain it. Strictly speaking, however, the theoretical teaching reveals only the hundred worlds and, multiplying by the ten factors of life, the thousand factors, and does not reveal their eternal nature. Only when supported by the essential teaching (the latter half) of the #LotusSutra, can the theoretical teaching be said to expound theoretically, as a possibility, the three thousand realms in a single moment of life. 💥 On the other hand, the essential teaching reveals #Shakyamuni’s enlightenment in the remote past (the true effect, eternal Buddhahood), the eternal life of his disciples, the #BodhisattvasoftheEarth (the true cause, the eternal nine worlds), and the eternity of the sahā world (the true land). These explain the eternal Ten Worlds and the eternal three realms of existence, and thus “the actual three thousand realms in a single moment of life.” Despite its comprehensive view, the essential teaching does not go on to reveal the practice that enables one to embody directly this principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life. Though the sutra says, “If there are those who hear the Law, then not a one will fail to attain Buddhahood,” it does not identify what the Law is. That is why #Nichiren (1222–1282) defined the entire Lotus Sutra—both the theoretical and the essential teachings—as representing “the theoretical three thousand realms in a single moment of life.” 🙏🏽 #nammyohorengekyo
