Honestly? If I ever tried to be a comptetitive speed swimmer, the world would be in chaos. [@oshunswimschool follow + favorite] Imagine this: The race begins, all the swimmers are already to the end of their first lap. The audience begins to point at a blurry figure swimming in loops in the deep end. Where did she get that mermaid tail from and why isn’t she racing? The commentator is at a loss for words. The race has to be called off 😅 Yeah, that would be me. I love the techniques for speed and efficiency, I love the excellence that it fosters, but I am much more of a water explorer, a meandering playmate, and a mermaid, than a racer. Now, maybe if there was a delicious meal at the end, I would be the first! If I’m being honest, we all have those things we’re just... not cut out for. And for me? It’s absolutely the world of competition. I once joined a recreational flag football team in college, and the coach wouldn’t play me because I “”looked too happy”” when I played lol. I have strategically avoided all organized sports my whole life. But hey, that’s why we have pros like @afroswimmers who train swimmers for competition with their eyes closed. So many peole thrive with the thrill and focus that competition can bring. Kudos to them! 🙌 Have you followed them yet? What if I told you that you could be part of a dynamic group of Black swimmers who are coming together to address the recent increase in drowning rates? I want to highlight the couragous folks who came out to test their swim skills at May’s BIPOC open swim. Imagine this: everyone is cheering each other on, and we all have a shared purpose of supporting Black communties and all people to be safer in the water. Well, so far six hopefuls have passed their lifeguard pre test certifications, and many others are continuing to practice their endurance, diving skills, and deep water comfort, to get prepared! 10 other BIPOC swimmers and allies of all swim abilities came out to deepen their water comfort in community. 🌟 What makes this experience so unique and exciting? A community of other Black community minded swimmers of all ages, a $500 stipend to complete the certification, and a pipeline to paid city lifeguard jobs. Here’s the real deal: Drownings in our community are on the rise. This is a preventable issue. We still have 2 spaces in the pilot cohort, and are working on creating additional cohorts. It was located at 276 NW 6 St on Little Broadway, the Northwest Second Avenue strip at the time was filled with clubs, theaters and nightlife for Black Miami. Black artists performing on Miami Beach couldn’t sleep there, so they had to cross the color line back to Overtown hotels after their sets. Past experiences and unpleasant memories of the water can be damaging to a kid’s confidence when it comes to swimming and other aquatic activities. In 2023 we released a study with 1,000 children between the ages of 9-16 to survey their swimming ability, confidence in and around the water, and their knowledge of the Water Safety Code. Here we take a look at some of the reasons given for their lack of confidence and fear of the water. As you can see there are many factors that have kept so many away from the water, but even so, we still found that majority of the kids just wanted to feel safe in the water and trust that they have the tools and knowledge to do so. So my super inspirational daughter Madison-Avery 6years old , has been entered into her first swimming 🏊🏽♀️ gala , she has definitely taken after me ❤️ I love swimming. Madi is competing in 25M Front stroke and Back stroke. She is considering the 25M breaststroke as she is not quite mastered this stroke as yet , but we are training to upskill . Fun fact about Mummy ; I am an Ex Lifeguard 🏊🏽♀️ and I advocate water saftey and inclusive swimming . In my youth, I was a seasoned gala swimmer 🏊🏽♀️ I used to compete for Clapham Swimming club and then I was selected to compete for Battersea JAGS. Competing was extremely hard the training even harder but it was exhilarating, back then often I was the only black swimmer in my club ,which was daunting and I often felt out of place at times , but I remember being coached by Olympian Susannah "Suki "Brownsdon who is a former competitive swimmer who won a silver medal in the women's 100-metre breaststroke at the 1981 European Championships, and represented Great Britain at four consecutive Olympic Games, with her best results being sixth place in the 100-metre breaststroke final in 1980 and seventh place in the 200-metre breaststroke final in 1984. She also represented England at three Commonwealth Games, winning a total of five medals. 🏊♂️ I thank Suki for believing in me and seeing my potential. I am thrilled that Madi has a love for swimming 🏊🏽♀️ and we have found something we both can do together and enjoy, also the health benefits are great too . I do see more black children attending swimming lessons. I do wish that more of the adults will join too and take advantage of family swim , children under 11 can swim for free in Lambeth council run pools . I am so glad that there is a Black Swimming Association founded by the legend Ed Accura . There are more opportunities to learn to swim, especially for Black people. Swimming is for everyone. 🏊🏽♀️ 🏊♂️ 👨🏿🦯🧑🦽👩🏾🦼. SYNCRO STORY TIME 😍🏊🏽♀️✨ When Zuri was 8, I learned two statistics: Girls drop out of sports at 2x times the rate of boys during puberty and their confidence declines. 96% of females in leadership roles participated in sports as teenagers. I remember seeing this and thinking I had to make sure my girl continued to stay active! She started dance at Ailey when she was 3 and was introduced to other sports, basketball, volleyball, and cross country, through middle school. She was NOT interested in any of them and started to loose interest in dance just as the Pandemic hit and activities came to a halt. She was 12. I continued to encourage her to move with me at home. Then while watching Artistic Swimming at the Summer Olympics in 2021, she jumped up and exclaimed “I want to do THIS!” After a Google search, she discovered a program (that happens to be one of the best in the country!) was less than a mile from our house. We agreed to sign her up and give it a try. I remember being nervous because, while she could swim, she wasn’t exactly strong in the water. Like many sports, starting at 13 is considered late, but it turns out she has a natural inclination for syncro and most importantly she loves it! Artistic Swimming, aka Syncro, is a very difficult sport that requires an immense amount of athleticism, flexibility, rhythm, and endurance…all while holding your breath! I am in awe of her growth and grace after just three years of training. In the fall, she was invited to join the Junior Team and is swimming with girls who started when they were very young. It was a HUGE leap for her and extremely challenging. She endured and I am incredibly proud of her! The team as a whole came in First Place at the Eastern Region Competition last weekend! Zuri qualified to swim both her team and duet routines at Nationals in Houston next month and in Budapest at the International Competition this summer! 👏🏾✨ Aside from watching the exciting and mesmerizing routines, one of my favorite things to witness at competitions is the team dynamic and the way they cheer for and celebrate each other. Another win, her confidence is soaring! Routine highlights 😍✨👉🏾

Introducing @jasminekarisofficial as one of our @kezcamps workshop facilitators for this summer’s Black Camping Club! 🎨⛺️🔥🌱🍃🌞🌻 She will be facilitating a workshop exploring our connection with nature through creating your own nature diary which you will construct and creatively add to throughout the session. Throughout the camping trip, participants will be encouraged to collect natural materials that they feel connected to and inspired by. These collected items will then inform our guided drawing and journalling session. The idea of this workshop is to embrace our innate curiosity and connection to nature and to explore creative ways of documenting and celebrating this tender relationship. There will be an emphasis on experimentation, whereby participants will be encouraged to practice with different drawing and mark-making techniques such as; continuous line drawing, using a non-drawing hand, drawing with eyes closed, focusing on texture detailing, collage and using a range of different mediums.
