Definitely couldn’t make out this level of detail with my eyes (and might not make out any details at all tomorrow if I don’t get to sleep I set an alarm to wake up to get my phone from outside). So beautiful. Reading the science behind it, the auroras were caused by a severe geomagnetic storm during which “three separate coronal mass ejections (CMEs) merging into one as they approach Earth. St. Helen’s House of Kingston, Ontario, built c.1837! 😍 Originally situated on 12 acres of Lake Ontario waterfront, St. Helen’s was built for the first mayor of Kingston, Thomas Kirkpatrick, and named in honour of his wife, Helen Fisher of Adolphustown. Thomas, Helen and their 9 children lived in this house until about 1850 when it was purchased by Kingston business man, James Morton. James changed the name of the estate to Mortonwood 🙄 In 1860, #Mortonwood was the chosen location for the Prince of Wales’ (later King Edward VII) stay in Kingston- although because of Orange Order trouble the Prince never actually set foot in town. Morton died in 1867 and the estate was sold to Robert M. Barrow, a captain. The house changed hands again in 1907 and was sold to Edward J.B. Pense, owner of the newspaper, the British Whig and named it Ongwanada (Mohawk word meaning, “home” or “community.”) During World War One St. Helen’s acted as a hospital and provided medical aid for soldiers returning home. In 1919, the government decided to buy it, and it served as the district military headquarters until 1968 when Corrections Canada took over ownership. Day 65: #rollingforIBD We didn’t make it as far as we wanted to today. This morning was a late start. We dawdled getting packed up and then rode about 10kms into Brighton for groceries and to the pharmacy to restock on Advil. . . Since apparently Midol doesn’t exist anymore 🙄 I’ve looked in every province along the way. A short ride down the road, we turned onto a path where we spent most of the day!! The trail was beautiful! It was hard packed gravel and ranged from tree lined shaded sections, to bridges over streams and lakes, to open farmers fields of hay crops. We passed an alpaca farm so, naturally, I had to stop! I sure do miss my farm animals!! Just as I was about to leave, I looked on the other side and saw the animal I miss the most. . . DONKEYS!!! 😍 oh man, I love donkeys. . . I even have my stuffy, Donk, with me on this trip 😂 The three of us carried on and eventually the path came out into a town. A town with a McDonald’s 🤩 we stopped for a quick snack and then realized that it was getting late. We decided that we would call it early and stop at the campground just on the other side of the ferry. The third ferry of the trip! Since it’s a long weekend, we were warned that the noise and music limit was stretched to midnight and that our neighbours would be rowdy. Yay. 🙄 hoping for a restful sleep!!
