Today was a difficult day…not a physically demanding one but an emotionally draining one that made me question why I am in this profession. We were checking the young seedlings that had just been planted and that always gives me hope. But as I walked through the block and witnessed the utter destruction and devastation that had been wrought upon the land I was filled with despair. I had done the initial timber recce on this block of second growth timber four years ago and was now witnessing the end result. The initial harvest of the old growth had taken place about seventy years ago and the legacy of the first pass was very evident even when partially obscured by the waste of the second pass. The purpose of a timber recce is to assess the timber for its volume, quality and species composition. At the same time you are determining where the boundaries should fall, making note of features such as streams, wetlands, wildlife usage, soil structure and other features you see on the landscape. There were extensive wetlands with connecting streams and I had recommended that a significant riparian buffer be retained to protect them and the associated sensitive soils. I had also made note of the well-used elk trails and recommended that this trail be excluded from the block. Generally these recommendations are heeded and incorporated into the design of the block. Not this time….the elk trails have been obliterated, they harvested through the streams, and the trees retained in the riparian have almost all been blown over. When I see such wanton disregard for managing these features in a responsible manner, I am ashamed to be part of the process. Earlier this week my field partner (@megsoj ) and I travelled to the back end of the Three Rivers drainage system to assess the survival rate of the Douglas-fir seedlings planted several years ago. Historically this area receives a tremendous amount of precipitation on an annual basis (approximately 4 meters) but has endured near drought conditions for the past couple of years. This has caused us to worry about the health of the seedlings. Douglas-fir is a relatively drought-tolerant species and these seedlings showed just how resilient they were to extremely dry conditions. The seedlings displayed a near 100% survival rate although the rate of growth varies tremendously with seedlings ranging in height from 30 cm to nearly 100 cm. The young trees were doing relatively well but the block was falling apart in places due to the combination of road building on steep and unstable terrain combined with large amounts of surface water run-off. This block was a difficult one to develop due to the extremely steep slopes and an elevation gain of nearly 400 meters within the block. The road accessing the block presented some engineering challenges and the first two slides illustrate the complexity of the road design. The slopes within the block are extreme and several slides and slumpages occurred during and after development. In retrospect this block, or at least large portions of it should not have been developed but the lure of big profits dictated otherwise. Walking over a block such as this does not make me proud of our industry. We could do so much better if we did not let pure economics drive development. We purport to strive to operate in a sustainable manner but those of us who adhere to this philosophy are much fewer in number than those whose goal is financial gain at all costs. It is difficult to not become discouraged but that is where our inner strength must sustain us. Dubs lost tonight but had a great wine night nonetheless. I brought a 1989 Leoville Las Cases, which was a little scary when we were opening it give the state of the cork but ultimately was a really fantastic wine. Nothing to me beats an aged class growth left bank Bordeaux. Probably slightly past the optimal drinking window, but still way better than most. Also had some excellent Napa cabs, including the 2006 Aida Estate vineyard 29 cab, 2012 O’Shaughnessy (@oshaughnessywinery) Howell Mountain cab, and 2009 von Strasser Spaulding vineyard Napa cab. Also had the 2014 Lithology (@lithologywine), which is a producer introduced to me by @aaaumiedawn @carolquintela. That was pretty good but could use a little more age. These are the times I get to taste aged, non-fruit bomb Napa wines. Alternative Silviculture Methods are one of the paths forward that will make forestry a truly sustainable industry. The Vancouver Island Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, in conjunction with Mosaic Forest Management and British Columbia Timber Sales, presented a workshop on just this…alternative silviculture methods as a viable approach to achieving sustainable forestry practices. The one-day workshop was attended by folks from many facets of the industry who were interested in adopting innovative approaches to making the transition from old growth to sustainable second growth forests. The workshop highlighted various aspects of commercial thinning of second growth stands with multiple entries over varying spans from five years to several decades. The sites we visited ranged in age from thirty-two years to fifty-three years and were primarily second-growth Douglas-fir. The majority of the timber harvested from this first entry was destined to a mill that produces veneer for plywood production. The larger diameter wood was sent to another mill as saw logs while the remainder of small-diameter wood was sold for pulp. Virtually every stem harvested had commercial value and there was minimal waste left behind. Is this approach as lucrative as the harvest of old growth? No, it does not approach the financial return generated by the non-sustainable harvesting of old growth. What it does do is contribute to long-term sustainable forestry that generates revenue over decades of multiple entries which can be combined with other intensive silviculture treatments such as fertilizing, pruning of the trees in the stand, and targeting specific sizes of trees for specific markets. This approach helps to provide stable local employment in stand tending and supply of timber to local mills and value-added producers. 2016 Château Léoville Barton, Saint Julien, Bordeaux, France 2nd Classified Growth in the 1855 Classification An Irishman walked into Bordeaux…ALMOST 200 YEARS LATER OF HISTORY IN BORDEAUX… The Barton family’s passion for wine is reflected in the elegance and consistency of Château Léoville Barton. This estate was classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and lies within the iconic terroir of Saint Julien in the Médoc. We paired it with steak au poivre, heirloom carrots & fingerling potatoes. We chilled the wine down to around 10C, decanted 1.5 hours and started sipping around 16C. The wine really started to open up by the 3rd hour and 18C, or warmer. Concentrated, incredible pedigree, long finish, but a tad lacklustre in complexity, for a second growth Bordeaux. Final Review: Very good, would pair with a pan seared duck breast next time as the peppercorns were a tad sharp for this sophisticated luxury wine. The #Rhodedendrons may be coming out now, but the #Roses are the star of the show as #Spring gets going at the #JenkinsEstate on the northwest slope of #CooperMountain, overlooking the #TualatinRiverValley near #Beaverton and #Aloha. The first structures on the property were built in 1880, and two years after the @THPRD purchased the 68-acre #JenkinsEstate in 1976 it was added to the #NationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces in 1978. Much of #WashingtonCounty was densley forested until the arrival of the #Oregon and #California #Railroad in #Hillsboro in the early 1870s, but almost all the #OldGrowth is gone today, even in the #CoastRange, which the #USGS considers #CooperMountain to be a part of geographically. While wooded, the estate is mostly #SecondGrowth forest.
