Before I read this book, I only knew about the first woman in space, Sally Ride. I was very happy to learn the remarkable story of the first class of female astronauts selected in 1978: Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Kathy Sullivan, Anna Fisher, Margaret “Rhea” Seddon, and Shannon Lucid through the new book The Six by Loren Grush. My thoughts on this book: 🚀 I read this both as a physical book and listened to the audiobook. I liked that the book had a brief two pages of the “cast of characters” describing the six women astronauts. It helped me to keep the ladies straight while I was listening to the audiobook. I would reference this section often at the start of the book. 🚀 The physical book has great pictures and index. 🚀 Nichelle Nichols visited Nasa’s newly named Johnson Space Center to talk about the space shuttle and a new crop of astronauts. These astronauts were going to be more than just test pilots. They wanted scientists and engineers, women, and people of color to apply. This sounds like it was a very inspirational pitch that got a lot of people to apply. 🚀 Just like their male counterparts, all six women were extraordinary, very smart, and successful people. 🚀 Unfortunately, the novelty of female astronauts caused a lot of press and strange questions to them. I can’t imagine as an engineer being asked about make-up and dating rather than your skills that got you to your position. 🚀 I really identified with Judy Resnik and loved her story. I was horrified to discover that she was killed on the Challenger. I was eight when the Challenger exploded, and we watched it live on TV at school. Christa McAuliffe, a schoolteacher going to space to show that space travel was for everyone, is the person that most stuck in my mind from this disaster. I was glad to learn more about the rest of the crew. In 2020 when Netflix released Challenger: A Final Flight, a four episode documentary series about the space shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28. 1986, I was surprised to find there wasn’t a book that was accessible to general audiences (and widely available in print and ebook formats) that detailed the tragedy. Author Adam Higginbotham, best known for his book, Midnight in Chernobyl, detailing the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, finally provides the book I was looking for. Higginbotham provides us with a book that is detailed and thorough, but also incredibly engaging as it details the lead up to and aftermath of the Challenger disaster. Despite wading into scientific details about the development of the space shuttle program, Hugginbotham showcases his talent at keeping things engaging and approachable for a general audience. As somebody not old enough to remember this event, I was shocked to learn that the shuttle launched despite warnings as late as the night before from engineers from the contractor responsible for building the rocket that would end up failing the next day, leading to the tragic loss of seven astronauts. This is an event that should never be forgotten. O Secretário Regional dos Assuntos Parlamentares e Comunidades, Paulo Estêvão, enfatizou recentemente a importância do ecossistema espacial nos Açores como um “desígnio autonómico e não partidário”. Durante a segunda edição do CanSat Junior Açores, ele destacou os “resultados muito significativos” alcançados nessa área, mesmo após cerca de 20 anos de ceticismo quando o tema foi inicialmente discutido no Parlamento dos Açores. Nos próximos meses, podemos esperar boas notícias relacionadas a esse ecossistema. O CanSat Junior Açores é um evento educacional que envolveu 13 equipes de sete ilhas do arquipélago. Os alunos participantes tiveram a oportunidade de trabalhar em projetos relacionados a microssatélites, conhecidos como CANSATs. Esses dispositivos têm o tamanho de uma lata de refrigerante e desafiam os estudantes a integrar todos os sistemas essenciais de um satélite em um espaço reduzido, incluindo antena, bateria e sensores. O evento faz parte da estratégia dos Açores para o espaço, promovendo a divulgação, educação e cultura científica nessa área1. Ironically, despite the glamour with which astronauts were portrayed in the media, other test pilots actually looked down on them at first, and would not volunteer for the Mercury program, because there was no actual piloting going on: the astronaut sat inside a capsule hurtling through space on a parabolic orbit (eventually the astronauts pushed for and gained a degree of control over the spaceship’s flight). This is not a technical book, detailing specs of rockets and dates of spaceflights. It is rather a study of the world of test pilots in the 1940s to early 60s: their backgrounds, their aspirations, how they built their careers, how they and their wives coped with the stress of such a highly-competitive and particularly deadly line of work (26% mortality rate back in the mid 40s to late 50s). It also provides a glimpse into the arena of space flight during the Cold War, and the effects on the society and military of the US of having to catch up with the Soviet space program, which launched the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, and then put the first man in orbit (among a long list of “firsts”). Alongside, contemporary associations were also reflected through various Joint Working Groups, Artemis Accord, NISAR, and the use of the Laser Reflectometer Array on Chandrayaan-3. Somnath outlined India’s commercial space activities, including payload technology and space-bound hardware being fabricated by commercial units and facilities provided by the Department of Space, enabling them to compete in global markets. Discussions on future collaborations included NASA's participation in India's proposal for a G-20 satellite for the environment and climate change, an advanced imaging spectrometer satellite as a follow-up mission for NISAR, a proposal for a QUAD satellite, and the utilization of the Gaganyaan cargo module as an option for cargo transfer to the International Space Station (ISS). Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has announced the upcoming launch of the country's advanced communication satellite, PAKSAT MM1, on May 30.
