Inspired by the timeless psalm 23 🐑🤍 ___________________________________________________ According to Aristotle, a sheep is a foolish and sluggish creature, prone to wandering even when it lacks nothing, and incapable of finding its way back. A sheep cannot save itself from storms or floods; it will simply stand there and perish unless the shepherd drives it away (Trapp). “The lord is “My shepherd” 🐑✍🏾 (psalm 23:1) ~ The most endearing word in the entire verse is the monosyllable “my”. He doesn’t say: “The Lord is the shepherd of the world at large, guiding the multitude as His flock,” but rather, “The Lord is my shepherd.” ~ Even if He were shepherd to no one else, He is a shepherd to me. He cares for me, watches over me, and preserves me (Spurgeon). Before a person can genuinely declare, “The LORD is my shepherd,” they must first recognize their own nature as that of a sheep. One cannot understand God as their Shepherd without acknowledging their own sheep-like qualities—foolishness, dependency, and a flawed will. In “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23,” Philip Keller explains that sheep do not lie down easily and will not unless four conditions are met. Being timid, they will not lie down if they are afraid. As social animals, they will not lie down if there is friction among them. If flies or parasites trouble them, they will not lie down. Finally, if sheep are anxious about food or hungry, they will not lie down. Rest comes because the shepherd has dealt with fear, friction, flies, and famine. If a sheep can finally lie down because it’s assured the shepherd has addressed these concerns, we can also find rest knowing that God, the good shepherd, is aware and capable of addressing our own concerns🤍. All who came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.” John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” … My mom has us reading ‘The Shepherd Trilogy’ by Phillip Keller, starting with ‘A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm’ - and man, if you don’t know why the Lord continually compares us to sheep, it’s quite humorous, and 100% spot on. Phillip Keller was a shepherd, so he beautifully breaks down just how reliant sheep are on their owner for everything. He also calls out just how lost it is on us in today’s world, having not grown up close to the farmers or labor intensive cultures that existed before the industrial revolution, we struggle to truly relate to just how alike humans and sheep are and how important it is that we know we belong to our shepherd (the good one), so that we may have life to the full. In the most recent chapter he dug into the phrase “I shall not want.” In John, Jesus says “I have come so that they may have life to the full” and David tells us in Psalm 23 that because the Lord is his Shepherd, he lacks nothing. A very humbling realization being newer to life in true contentment, is the fundamental mortality of what we think we know we “want” on earth as eternal beings just passing through this life on the way to the next. The “want” from Psalm 23 is the peace that only the good shepherd can give. A type of contentment that can only be given by Him. But that’s just it…. Taking a seat is REALLY hard for someone stuck in fight or flight mode. If staying busy and constantly “doing” makes you feel safe, taking a seat feels very unsafe. Your brains job is to keep you safe. That’s why rest can be really hard for a high-achiever. Kind of like the Israelites wanting to go back to Egypt. My Egypt wasn’t a place but more a work ethic that kept me doing, doing, and doing which led me to burnout, overwhelm, and a stress induced autoimmune disease. The women I work with are high-performers and most are stuck in fight or flight without even knowing it. When I ask them what they do for fun, what they think of the word “rest” and what their self-care routine looks like, I usually get a blank stare or an “I don’t really do anything for fun” or “rest feels lazy”. Those used to be my answers, too. How is it that resting seems more like punishment than a blessing when the sabbath was created for man? How about you? Do you have a hard time resting, slowing down, and simply being? I have and still do sometimes! But I now have the tools to regulate my nervous system and get back into alignment with Truth when I recognize the signs of overwhelm, burnout, and stress I was never meant to carry. But the state of your mind and heart doesn’t change the fact that the table has already been prepared…it’s simply waiting for you. So, here’s a wild thought for you today to consider…. What if the key to receiving what God has prepared for you is the opposite of what you’ve been doing? What if the key to MORE is to slow down, take a seat, and feast at the table? This requires TRUST. The key to long term success is learning how to operate in rhythms of rest and trust the One who has everything you need. I don’t know who needs this today but you have permission to take a seat. God’s already prepared the table for you. It’s your choice to sit down. Are you ready? Vor ein paar Monaten habe ich diesen Vers auswendig gelernt. Warum? 🥰 Hier die Wundergeschichte: Anfang des Jahres ging der Zünder unserer Gasheizung kaputt. Immer wieder ging sie aus und ging nicht so leicht wieder an. Die Heizungsfirma bestellte das Ersatzteil, doch die Lieferung dauerte ein paar Wochen. In dieser Zeit lernte ich neu zu schätzen, was Gott mir mit Psalm 23 sagen möchte. Ich kniete mich neben unserer Heizung und betete mal wieder für die Funktion, aber so wirklich glaubte ich nicht daran, denn sooft hatte ich dieses Gebet in den letzten Tagen gesprochen. Also fragte ich Gott: „Wie soll ich beten?“ und Psalm 23 kam mir in den Sinn. Ich holte meine Bibel und las den Psalm 23 mehrmals am Tag neben unserer Heizung.
