Thank you to all our very lovely visitors who pick up after their dogs and dispose of the waste properly, we REALLY appreciate it. 😁 Unfortunately we also have a number of visitors who don't do that! We do have bins all around the park that you can put poop bags in, or you can double bag your dogs mess and take it home, or put it in one of our bins in the car park area. Please do not put poop bags in our Fort foundations, drains, lake, river, trees, on the Fort or decorate our standing stones with them! Please also be aware our lovely goats are free range after hours, and could eat poop bags, potentially resulting in their death or at least a huge vets bill! Dog poop can also cause sickness in wildlife, as well as domestic stock, and children. And, if your dog has an accident in our cafe or outdoor seating area, please tell a member of staff, rather than just leaving it behind! If you have forgotten your doggy poop bags, just ask in the kiosk, or cafe, we have them for sale. We just want to reassure our lovely lake users that our lake is SAFE to swim and paddle in. The river Alyn has been polluted after the fire at a factory in Mold, but this does NOT affect our lake at all. Our lake is spring fed from an aquifer underground. It does not draw water from the river Alyn at all. The lake has an outflow to the river, but there is no way for river water to enter the lake. We carefully monitor our lake to ensure great water quality for both humans and wildlife, and also have our solar powered 'Algae Busters' operating , using harmless sonic pulses to prevent the algae from developing blooms, and ensuring the lake water is clear. Please remember to keep out of the river until the all clear is given by the Environment Agency - but DO continue to enjoy our lake. In our run up to our 'Auxilia' event 👉https://fb.me/e/1AKL4OuVB - 25th May - 2nd June, we thought you'd like to find out more about the lives of the Legionary and Auxiliary soldiers who would have occupied Forts similar to one we're building here at Park in the Past. Being on the Northern Frontier at the edge of the Empire was a hard life. Its cold and wet ( don't we know it!!) So the soldiers who were stationed here had to adapt and wear suitable clothing, and footwear. Roman soldiers didn't all wear sandals!! As you can see from the photos of various members of Deva Victrix, there were a variety of boots and shoes available for the soldiers ( and Civilians) The Roman army introduced hobnails into Britain - and they soon caught on! As you can see the bottom of the shoes and boots have the nails driven into the sole to help create grip - if you walk around the Park and look at the earth tracks, you will see where the Romans have been walking by the tracks left by their hobnailed shoes and boots - our Iron Age Britons don't leave noticeable footprints when they walk because their boots don't have hobnails! Next time you meet a Roman or a Celt in the Park, ask about their shoes. Getting ready for AUXILIA!! EEK!! our flagship 'Auxilia' event is FAST approaching!! We are looking forwards to hosting some of the BEST Roman Reenactment groups from Europe and the UK. With the weather finally pointing in the right direction, we can now crack on with sprucing the Park up. We are creating a NEW VISITOR CENTRE which will also host our collection of beautiful models of Roman buildings, and replica Ballistas as well as being an information point - the building will be having new windows put in, and has now got a new lick of paint, ( the scruffy unpainted bits will be replaced with a new door and window - we didn't miss a bit!!) Our little Kiosk also got some TLC too - we think it looks quite cute now! The Fort is undergoing its spring tidy up after all that rain, and has a snazzy new drainage system, so it will be able to cope with future buildings, and visitors feet! Our landscape rewilding project, which began during the Covid lockdowns, is a great success!! Our wild flowers are now starting to thrive, and will eventually spread to produce some beautiful wild flower meadows. 🌼🌼 The whole site has been seeded with a wild flower and grass mix of native British plants, that would have been common 2000 years ago. But we need YOUR help! Our flowers NEED TO SEED!! So we are asking our visitors NOT TO PICK flowers in the Park. We planted the flowers to help increase the diversity of insect and bird life in the Park, and its working - but if people pick the flowers, they are preventing those plants from seeding, and reproducing, as well as removing valuable food for insects and birds. 🌼🦋🐌 Unfortunately we have noticed more and more people who just pick the flowers and then dump them around the site - so sad! We had two lovely UK-Pakistani families glamping on the farm this weekend. The weather was nice and sunny, the views superb and they enjoyed feeding the chickens and sheep, and visiting #llangollen and #parkinthepast. We love meeting guests from all over the world - and sometimes they share food with us, one of the oldest human traditions of friendship. Wednesday Spring Projects. - Grow a Bean in a Jam Jar! Park in the Past, Fagl Lane, Hope, LL12 9HB Wed 5pm till 8pm (swim & stroll only) Sat & Sun 9am - 6pm Last Entry 1 hr before closing. A good fun easy project, and strangely satisfying for adults as well as kids! One of the staple foods in the Iron Age in Britain were pulses - peas and beans etc. Easy to grow and eay to dry for long term storage, pulses were, and still are a large part of peoples every day diet. One type of Bean Archaeologists have discovered on Iron Age sites is called the Celtic black broad bean (Vicia faba L.) Why not start your own Iron Age veg garden? If you don't have much outdoor space, create it in plant pots or even hanging baskets, depending on what type of veg you want to grow. Let's start with easy beans - Runner Beans and Broad Beans are easy seeds to get, and super easy to grow - other varieties of beans will also grow in a jam jar to start off with. Items Needed: quite a large jam Jar Dry Bean Cotton balls or paper kitchen towel Water Sunny Window Steps: Place wet ( but not too soggy) cotton balls or kitchen towel in your jam jar - press them against the side and sandwich your bean between the glass jar and the cotton balls - that way, as the bean germinates, you can see it, and watch it grow. Put the bean in the jar in a sunny window. You could make a little growing diary, draw the bean as it develops or measure it as it grows and see how long it takes to go from a dry bean to a recognisable plant. Don't forget to carefully water it periodically so it doesn't dry out. You could plant several beans in different jars and have a 'Bean Race' - see which one REALLY is a Runner Bean!! When your bean plant outgrows its jar, you can plant it in your garden or in a pot, in a sunny spot - Runner Beans will need canes or a trellis to climb. Meet some of 'Deva Victrix', our Roman Reenactment Group. Park in the Past, Fagl Lane, Hope, LL12 9HB 9am - 6pm Sat & Sun Last Entry 1 hr before closing. The 'Romans' and 'Britons' you meet when you visit Park in the Past, are mostly volunteer members of 'Deva Victrix', the reenactment group based here. When visitors meet them, they are all in 'kit' - dressed as the characters they've researched and portray and demonstrating everything from living history to combat. If you have read some of the little Bio posts, you will know some of them. Members of the group take a huge amount of time and effort to research characters, facts about the time period, how people lived in various situations, from military to civilian, including how people of different cultures lived. They also research and make clothing and some weapons, as well as being advised by archaeologists and historians. Other items are commissioned from expert makers, who also advise on what's correct for the time period and type of person. On top of all that they train in combat and archery ( in all weathers!) and help to build the Fort. The group have an immense amount of fun doing this and are dedicated to giving the best possible portrayals and information, right down to the smallest detail, in every event they do. They help each other and work as a fantastic team and really bring the Fort to life. Joy is....... A Segedunum Duck Cup!!! 😁💕 Thank You to 'Potted History'. EEK!!! This little 'Duck Cup' fills me with a RIDICULOUS level of joy! I decided my 'Roman Paintbox' also needed a tea mug ( I know tea is not a historically correct drink for Romano British people - unless you read Asterix in Britain!!) As an artist, and reenactor, I am a bit tea obsessed, I can't function without a brew! I've always wanted one of these mugs since I saw an article about it. Anyhoo - having decided I would get one from @Potted History , I discovered that because they use authentic historical glazes , that that version of the mug wasn't suitable for modern tea drinking, so I requested one with a 'tea proof' glaze. That's the beauty of commissioning something hand made from people who really know their historical pottery. So Graham Taylor and Sarah Lord created my perfect reenactment mug, and it's PERFECT... I have been regularly testing it, and it is definitely one of my favorite reenactment items....apart from 'Little Bob' - my sword - but that's another post. Did you know that warm weather causes Algae to bloom, and many lakes and ponds start to show that familiar blue/green colour as the water gently heats up. The Algae can cause upset stomachs and sickness if ingested. We don't have that problem at Park in the Past though - our 35 acre lake is kept beautifully clean and eco friendly because we have our state of the art Solar Power 'Algae Busters' (the floating tent like things in the lake). Wednesday Recipes - Iron Age Mutton or Lamb and Juniper Stew. Park in the Past, Fagl Lane, Hope, LL12 9HB EASTER OPENING 👉- Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon 29th, 30th, 31st March & 1st April 9am - 5pm Last Entry 1 hr before closing. Lamb is a meat traditionally eaten at Easter, though the pre Christian Celts didn't celebrate Easter - they did enjoy eating sheep! This is a historical recipe from Jacqui Woods book, 'Prehistoric Cooking' published by The History Press. This simple recipe can be made with either lamb or mutton, if you can get it - mutton is the more historically accurate version. Ingredients: 1kg chopped mutton or lamb A piece of butter for frying ( the Romans haven't introduced oil for cooking yet!) 4 whole Ransom plants, including bulbs ( please forage respectfully) or use an onion 1 litre of dry wine 10 Juniper Berries 1 tsp salt Method: In a heavy base pan, fry the meat in very hot butter. Add the chopped onion or Ransoms ( and clove of garlic if you like) and the red wine, Juniper Berries and salt. Put into a pot with a good tight lid, and place in an oven, or by a fire for around 4 hrs, stirring periodically. ( This would also work in a slow cooker.) I've been a bit quiet recently due to be being extremely busy getting our Art Workshop/Studio room all sorted for our very first proper workshops with a den of our very own!! Rob has been brilliant helping me to paint the room and move furniture - we even had help from some Romans! The room isn't quite there yet - but now its a case of moving a RIDICULOUS amount of paint and brushes and general arty gubbins into the room, and also make it look welcoming - we even got new colourful rag rugs for it!! ( probably didn't need them - but I'm a sucker for a good rag rug!! A business lecturer will take the plunge for a transformative children’s charity. Anne Williams, a tutor at @Coleg_Cambria Yale in #Wrexham, is to participate in the epic #Aquasphere #Chillswim #Coniston End to End Swim this summer. The 5.2-mile challenge takes place on Coniston water in the #LakeDistrict on Saturday June 22. Anne, from #CefnMawr, is hoping to raise more than £250 for #LevelWater, an organisation which provides affordable and expert one-to-one swimming lessons for children with physical, visual and hearing impairments. A former #RAF senior aircraftwoman, she swam for the military before competing in several Masters’ events in recent years. Training hard for the event at Hanmer Lake, #ParkinthePast, #Hope, and #AlderfordLake in #Whitchurch, she said: “My Dad was in the Navy, and I was in the RAF for seven years before going to university and becoming a lecturer, so I swam for them when I was younger. “I’ve always been comfortable in the water, especially outdoors, and while this is a huge task I am looking forward to it and hoping people get behind what I’m doing. “I love swimming and love a challenge!
