It’s here. It’s confirmed. The OrwellChallenge this year is introducing an ultra marathon to the various distance options. The ‘Orwell 55’ as we’re going to know it as, is a 55km challenge utilising the existing event route paths and truly embracing the spirit of the 47 year event. It covers the current marathon route with an extra lap of the southern Trimley loop and we’re offering it with an 8.5hr cut off time. If you think you’re up for it, come and show us what you’re made of and help make this incredible local event even bigger and better than ever before. All proceeds go to charity. There is no profit. Yes folks, it’s the return of the #OrwellChallenge and this year, as well as the usual walking options and the half marathon and full marathon for the runners, we’re introducing the Orwell Challenge ultramarathon. After a successful trial of this last year on one of the hottest days of the year, 2024 will see the inaugural official running of it. The exact distance of this is yet to be confirmed (due to logistics of utilising existing route paths) but it will be a distance of between 31.8 and 38 miles (51 and 61kms). Confirmation of the ultramarathon distance will be made ahead of the cut off of the early bird discounted entries at the end of February. Meet Richard. Richard is a member of our Rotary Club (organisers of the Orwell Challenge) since 1971, being in fact one of our founding members. Richard is also the official photographer of our events, and he's taken photos of EVERY SINGLE Orwell Challenge (or Orwell Walk, as it was known before) since its very first edition. All of them. Since 1976. Except this one. Unfortunately, poor health landed Richard in hospital shortly before the Orwell Challenge this year, and we were left without his much appreciated participation and contribution to the event. No one is sadder about this than Richard. Due to these circumstances, our official album would seem to be rather thin this year, so we've come up with an idea. If all of you were to send us your best pictures of the day (of yourselves, of the views, of your poor muddy feet, of whatever you like!), we could collate them into the official album of the Orwell Challenge 2023, which will be posted on our Facebook page and our website. We'll obviously credit each person for their photos and, as a token of appreciation, we'll give away a few goodie bags among the people who take part.
