King Kong 1933 : the Lost Scenes - Part 2 Following the scene which Kong confronts 3 triceratops, the sailors arrive at the edge of a precipice where they fall prey to a new monster, an arsinoitherium. As they scramble up the log to escape the animal’s charge, Kong, alerted by their cries, appears on the other side and begins to shake the tree. All retreat cut off, the sailors are caught in the crossfire… This sequence, which came out of Creation, was also reused in the test reel and was present in Kong’s screenplay (although in the novel a triceratops was used instead of the arsinoitherium), was finally eliminated (pics 1, 2, 3). Cooper changed his mind and asked for the scene to be reshot using a styracosaurus. In the new version, the styracosaurus tried to move the log with its long horn placed on his snout. In the end, both versions were abandoned because they distracted the audience from the story itself. The styracosaurus finally made its cinematic debut in Son of Kong (pic 4). King Kong 1933 : the Lost Scenes - Part 1 Compared with its initial cut, completed at the end of 1932, King Kong was cut by some forty minutes when it was released in March 1933. Among these cut scenes, which have never been found, the Spider Pit is of course the most famous, but many others are missing. Apart from a few minor scenes on the boat sailing to Skull island (mainly dialogue and the introduction of the little monkey Ignatz), the first major scene was to show Kong, shortly after he abducted Ann, confronting three triceratops. Taking refuge on a dry mount in the middle of the swamp, King hurls huge boulders at his attackers. One of the triceratops is killed instantly, the second gets stuck in the swamp and the third prefer to give up. All the evidence suggest that this scene was never filmed, given the time and effort required to create it. However, it was included in the script and sketches during production. Merian C. Cooper Is one of those rare filmmakers in that their personal lives were possibly more interesting than the films they made. Cooper fought as it pilot in World War I, his hands being burned up at one point, and he having to try to land the plane with his knees. Then he helped the Polish to repel the Soviet invasion, which ended up landing him in a communist Gulag from which he escaped and walked all the way to Lithuania. When World War II broke out, he traveled to China to be part of the flying Tigers, who helped the Chinese take down the invading Japanese fighter planes. He helped start the first international airlines: Pan-American. 91 years ago today, the original King Kong movie was released!!! This is a film that is always going to have my love & respect! It inspired so many filmmakers I look up to & without it, I don’t think cinema wouldn’t be the same. Ik that may be a cliche thing to say, but it’s honestly true. King Kong (1933) Directed by Merian C. Cooper & Ernest B. Schoedsack • • • With the movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) releasing soon, I figured I’d watch a movie relating to one of these iconic monsters. Normally I’d go for a Godzilla movie but since I’ve seen most, I thought I’d go for the original Kong movie since I had never seen it. It’s honestly pretty crazy how much they were able to do 91 years ago. The stop-motion animation looks great. The matte paintings are beautiful. The rear projections were done well. It’s a technical feat to see all of what they managed to put on screen. The cinematography captures it all wonderfully. The story is pretty simple but is still interesting enough. The characters are probably even more simple and didn’t have me as interested in them. I mainly just enjoyed this for how it presented Skull Island and for its production value. One of the best parts was the iconic T-Rex fight scene. One of the big takeaways I had with watching this was how much of this was used in Peter Jackson’s 2005 Kong film. The story and some of the action scenes are all are practically the same. Even the iconic score is brought to the 2005 version. Anyways, it was great seeing this all-time classic. REVIEW: #sonofkong (1933) Now this one isn’t a bad film but it’s isn’t good either. Sure it does have some recurring cast from the first film and had some interesting ideas but man this film is I’ll admit is kinda slow and doesn’t get to skull island until 40 minutes into the film. The stop motion I do like and had some interesting creatures like the cave bear and kongs son . Some of the dinosaurs have been reused i from the original film, and the soundtrack for this film almost sound Disney like. But that’s just the signal that some of the grim and somewhat dark tone were gone and has gone completely lighthearted. Now I’m case if some of you asked why it came out the same year as the original well that’s because after the original became a major success the studio wanted a sequel but made half the budget and made within 9 months for a December release, not a terrible film I say earlier but you can tell it’s rushed. So you can check this film out if you want to know what happens after the events of the original film but I watched once in a while only because of the stop motion effects. Otherwise you can pass this film. REVIEW: #kingkong (1933) Very much like Godzilla I shouldn’t have to say much about this film because not only is one of the greatest films ever made but one of the most groundbreaking and influential movies at it’s time and still is. This film pioneered a lot of special effects and was one of the very first films to have sound. The story is pure and original in its own way ( other than the lost world (1925) ), the visuals and cinematography were eerie but unique and lastly the stop motion. It may be dated to most people but I’m a sucker for stop motion and that art of format will never get old. Of course The trex scene is one of my favorite scenes, and intresting the scene took 7 weeks to animate that whole scene. Plus the ending is iconic. Overall it’s a gorgeous film and very important on special effects came a very long way. Willis O'Brien was born on this day (March 2nd) in 1886. O'Brien was the man behind the sensational stop motion visual effects for 'The Lost World' in 1926 - the Jurassic Park of its day. It is a silent film and this dates it, but the vfx are way ahead of their time and still pack a punch. Today his is best known providing the title character for Merian C Cooper's masterpiece 'King Kong' made in 1933. Still considered by many to be the gold standard of 'monster movies'.
