To @philip_mould_gallery in #PallMall last night for the launch of @cliveaslet ‘s latest book Sir Edwin Lutyens: Britain’s Greatest Architect? published by @triglyphbooks . There I met the King, well, in the shape of his latest portrait by @jonathanyeo which is currently on show at the gallery. It’s a magnificent piece which is much bigger in stature than it appears on screen and an appropriate one to have marking the gateway to Clive’s launch party for the King is passionate about architecture. Clive’s first piece on Lutyens was written in 1977 when he had just joined @countrylifemagazine who had a close association with the architect. The original offices and furniture were designed by him. Since then, Clive has gone on to become something of an expert on the man known for his regular supply of jokes which Clive said made it difficult to get a true picture of the man as “he hid his personality behind them”. Clive is now head of the @lutyens.trust and Professor of architecture at Cambridge. Can’t wait to read the book a copy of which Clive signed for me (yay!). The design embraces the inherent beauty of the landscape, drawing inspiration from the earthy hues and textures that define the surrounding Southern Highland terrain. The carefully curated colour palette reflects the tonal richness of the nearby landscape, mirroring the subtle variations found in the weathered basalt rock scattered across the paddocks. In the new capital of the British Raj, New Delhi, the Viceroy’s House or Rashtrapati Bhavan had a footprint bigger than Versailles. His unfinished Liverpool Cathedral would have rivalled St Peter’s in Rome. Intensely shy, Lutyens hid his personality behind puns and jokes - and yet he could be called ‘part mystic’, a reference to an inner profundity. Rich in stories, the Talk will cover the entertaining and stylish biography of the architect, based on Clive's forthcoming book, a major new study incorporating fresh research which shows this most charismatic of architects in a new light. Clive Aslet is an award-winning writer and Visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge. In 2019, he founded Triglyph Books with the photographer Dylan Thomas, whose first title was their joint book Old Homes, New Life: the Resurgence of the British Country House. Clive has published more than thirty books on architecture and British culture, beginning with The Last Country Houses for Yale University Press in 1982. For many years Clive was Editor of the magazine Country Life and he is now Chair of the Lutyens Trust. When I was a flippant and irritating school kid I was taken, aged around 13 , on a school trip to the battlefields of the #somme in France but also to #ypres in Belgium. The #lastpost at the #meningate started it I think, but by the time I came back to England I believe I was a slightly different person. There is no-one who can go and see the battlefield sites and memorials of this region without being profoundly affected. And the most extraordinary of all is perhaps #theipval where the cataclysmic scale of it all is manifested in bricks and mortar. Somehow, #lutyens has almost achieved the impossible and in physical form brought forth the intangible into something solid and created a contemporary and secular church of sorts. It's an extraordinary place and generates feelings that are profound and leave you somehow changed. S N O W D R O P living her best life… We’ve had 4 chickens, and they’ve all had such different personalities. Snowdrop runs out to see me every time, as she knows I’ll have some fruit or vegetables. Then once shes weighed up the snack situation, she moves to the gate to be asked to be let out around the garden. She’s the only one that’s ever done this. We’re lucky that we can have both Snowdrop and Alfie (our dog) out at the same time. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t leave them unattended, but they are simply not interested in each other.
