Team Leader Ruth and Support Worker Asiya got on their high-vis jackets to go litter picking around Harpurhey. ♻️ Ruth and Asiya did a lap around the local park, filling up two full bags in just under an hour! What a special & fun-filled afternoon!!! Thanks to my friends Sierra (@sierra.leigh.thrifts ), Krystal (@andersonstudios247) & Nirvana (@nirvana_zzay) for taking part in the scavenger hunt/art show/ litter pickup event with me at Toronto's Cherry Beach & Cherry Beach Park. Two of my wildlife photos (a frog & a duck) along with 58 other photos from different photographers who are part of the Beauty of the Don Facebook group were selected by some representatives of the Toronto Nature Stewards. These chosen photos were posted at various spots within Cherry Beach & Cherry Beach Park to spread awareness for people to stop littering, hence the scavenger hunt to find them. This in a sense was also an art show kind of thing. Not only that, but we got to pick up litter along the way to keep Cherry Beach clean. How cool is that? And we were guided by a very friendly member of the Toronto Nature Stewards group named Christine who took us through the trails as we picked up litter along the way to clean up Cherry Beach. What an unforgettable afternoon of miracles. We were pretty much having a bit of a tough time finding my 2 photos for a bit of time, but each time before we found one of my photos, something had happened to one of us which got us going to a spot where we accidentally come across one of my photos. The most special moment was after our long Cherry Beach chill session at the sandy area. We were leaving and packing up for the evening, and as we made our way to the parking lot, we came across my mallard duck photo just on the fringes of the sandy beach area of Cherry Beach. Wow!! If we hadn't decided to chill at the beach, we could have only spotted 1 of my 2 photos (ie the frog). But what a special afternoon! This morning the @neighbors_of_the_nw_branch hosted a private clean up event with a group from the Adat Shalom synagogue which I led with guidance from Ed Murtagh. It was a dry day albeit overcast. The group was enthusiastic and keen to clean up the area around the Northwest Branch, at the Kemp Mill Road trailhead. Trash was found along the roadways and in the tributaries leading to the Northwest Branch. Thank you to the Adat Shalom for reaching out to us.
It was yet another wet day but rain or shine the litter hotspot clean up at Long Branch-Arliss Park went ahead as planned. This was a clean up organized by @friendsofsligocreek with help from @montgomeryparks. Because of the rain we didn’t have as large of a group as expected but the seven volunteers who showed up were eager and enthusiastic to clean up trash and make a difference in their community. A LOT of plastic and glass bottles were picked up as well as aluminium cans. My thanks to Ed for his guidance. We have another clean up event this morning!

It is important to use the outdoors responsibly and take care of our local environments, our magnificent wildlife, our lands and waters. With this in mind we are asking those visiting the River Bann to please #leavenotrace. Sadly in recent times the beauty of this local amenity has been destroyed with carelessly dropped litter, drinks cans and bottles, items of clothing, crisp packets etc. with some strewn along the banks of the river and floating in the water. Also numerous vape liquid bottles emptied from a vehicle and dumped at the entrance to the area!!Please be mindful when you visit and please bring home your litter to help keep the area #litterfree. Two of my wildlife photos (a frog & a duck) have been selected by a representative of Toronto Nature Stewards to be used as signages to help spread awareness for people to stop littering. There will be 58 other photos (60 in total) on display from other photographers as well who are part of the Beauty of the Don Facebook group, which I'm also part of. In terms of the address of this event, the starting point is 16 Regatta Road. Here are some instructions on how to get there: *The public transportation alternative involves taking the number 202 Cherry Beach loop bus down to Cherry Beach Loop from Mill St & Parliament Street (Distillery District area, around King St & Parliament Street area). From there, it will take you about 6 or 7 stops south of there, and it's about a 13-15 minute walk east from Cherry Beach Loop to the 16 Regatta Drive area of Cherry Beach Park. *If you will be using the subway, best get off at Castle Frank Subway station, and take the number 65 bus southbound & get off at Parliament & King. Then, walk a tiny bit south to around Parliament & Mill St, and take the number 202 cherry beach bus (as stated in the previous point). This bus will take you 6 or 7 stops south to Cherry Beach Loop, and it's a 13-15 minute walk east to 16 Regatta Road. *Another public transportation alternative is to take the number 114 Queens Quay East bus which goes from Union Station all the way east to Carlaw Avenue via Commissions Street. Get off at New Cherry Street & Commissioners Street, and walk south down Cherry Street, then east along Unwin Avenue, and south down along Regatta Road. It's about a 28 minute walk from New Cherry Street & Commissioners Street to 16 Regatta Road. *For biking & walking, you can go along the Martin Goodman Trail. *And for those who want to drive here, there's parking between 4 & 16 Regatta Road. Apologies for the delayed post!! Our Goose Island cleanup for My Chicago River Day was monumental. We gathered 55 volunteers and even had a visit from the Deputy Mayor! We covered Hickory, Cherry, Division, and Elston, right next to the river. Cherry and Hickory are among the worst dumping grounds we’ve seen in Chicago, so we knew we had our work cut out for us. In roughly 2.5 hours, we collected an estimated 165 bags of trash, plus a ton of other dumped items like a bed frame, couch, tires, a sink, etc. Although we don’t have exact weight totals, I am putting it around 2200 lbs, which officially sets a new record for the group along with the bag count. Absolutely outstanding work, team!! Thanks for showing up to keep our river system litter free. Special thanks to @friendsofthechicagoriver for hosting this amazing event each year. Not only does it tarnish the beauty of our surroundings, but it also poses a threat to wildlife and our environment. 🚯 It also makes it unpleasant for the next person🚶♂️➡️, family 👨👩👧👦, and group🚣♀️ that would like to enjoy out beaches, harbour, green belts, or rivers. We understand that with **council home collections now every three weeks**, it's challenging to manage waste. But don't worry, we've got a solution! 🌟 🌸 **Grab a Pink Bag** 🌸 Can't take your litter home? Simply fill a **pink bag** with your litter and leave it next to the council black bin. The council will take care of the rest! Easy, right? 📍 **Pink Bag Pick-Up Points** 📍 You can find pink bags at @harbour_cafe_fisherrow or help yourself to some from our Biffa bin, we will add a few to the handles when we're closed. ⛔️ Please don't try to squeeze your rubbish it to our commercial waste biffa bin, which is locked. As a small independent business, we have to pay for our waste to be removed, and it's billed by weight. ⛔️ Let's keep our community clean together! Daviess County Fiscal Court would like to recognize Katy Vogel, a third grade student at Deer Park Elementary School. Katy has been a strong advocate for litter prevention and spearheaded an artwork competition in her school to raise awareness about the issue. This morning I spent close to three hours cleaning up the trash behind the Park Forest Apartments located on Piney Branch Road, close to New Hampshire Avenue, on the non-trail side of the NWB. Working beneath the canopy of the trees I was unaware that a steady rain was falling! While the apartment complex had cleaned up a lot of the trash earlier this year there was still a lot to pick up and more to do. Can you see the shopping cart in the last photo? It’s embedded deep in the soil and too difficult for me to remove. In total I picked up 125 gallons of trash including 67 plastic bottles and a whopping 49 plastic grocery bags. I will arrange for a group clean up to complete the work.
Thank you to all the volunteers who came out on Tuesday for our Community Clean-Up 👏 We had a lovely evening for it ☀️ We dug weeds & swept the main village area including Rahara Church & Rahara National School. We planted some lovely bright flowers at the Church & at the flowerbed outside the Old Church. We picked litter, cut down plastic around poles in the village & painted our vintage village pump. We are delighted to have some native plants growing in our 3-tier planters including buttetcup & herb robert. These are great pollinators. Thanks to Rahara National School for allowing us to use their compost & water butt. We also used cardboard to supress weed growth.
