Another community clean-up initiative in the books! 🌱🌎💚✅ Unfortunately, it started raining so I didn’t expect anyone to come but once the rain cleared these amazing folks came to help! Even though the area is small, it was very time consuming, but the results speak for itself. ✅ The mission is to help inspire and empower others, even just one person, to combat litter through awareness, education, and clean-up initiatives, and I can happily say, mission accomplished! Part 2/2 of my ravine cleanup project was a success!!🌱🌎💚✅ Hauling up garbage bags, car tires, toilets, remnants of renovations, and a lawnmower so heavy it felt like it was made of lead, I’m so happy to say that this ravine is officially restored.💚 Between two days I removed approximately 65 bags of garbage from this ravine, and I can proudly say I’ve single-handedly collected and disposed of over 100 bags of trash to date! We dedicated two hours to picking up litter along a neglected area in our neighborhood, and the picture captured only a fraction of the immense task we accomplished on just one street. The most rewarding aspect was seeing our community come together, united in our efforts to combat the litter issue! In honour of Earth week and the start of a fulfilling journey of cleaning up our communities, restoring habitats, prevention and education, here’s the first part of the ravine cleanup project I’ve been eagerly waiting to share! 🌱🌎💚 This endeavor took two days to complete (approximately 16 hours 😳) spanning this section and another I’ll share in an upcoming post. The challenge was a difficult feat, mainly because so much of the litter was hidden beneath dense vegetation, making it hard to remove. Another successful clean-up initiative in the books!!✅🌎🌱 This week was a particularly busy one, as I devoted a day to tackling a ravine, and the progress made has been incredible!! I’ve been coordinating with waste management and the city to streamline the disposal process, so I no longer have to take the garbage back to the dump myself. 😅😅😅 It’s quite funny that I’ve almost become buddies with the garbage man at the waste management facility; they recognize me now and are very supportive of what I’m doing. Last week we achieved another small victory in our clean up efforts! We collected another three bags (unfortunately had to bag the boxes because there were critters on them 🐜). The highlight was the unexpected help from a neighbour 🥹🥹🥹 We focused on a new section of the road I’ve been working on, contributing to its gradual improvement. 🌿✨ EPA officers are on-ground conducting the Honorary Litter Warden Training in Region 9. This 2-day session which started on the 28th November 2023 aims to empower individuals as litter wardens across all 21 communities under the South Rupununi District Council. 🌍🚮 Through this comprehensive training, participants will gain essential knowledge to enforce the Litter Regulations (2013), contributing significantly to the preservation of our environment. We had 18 committed individuals joining us on Day 1! #DidYouKnow? After learning the detriments of plastic and how much plastic waste is being produced, fast food restaurants have been making efforts in order to reduce them. For example, McDonald's says that by 2025 they will not be offering plastic toys and instead, offer toys made from recycled or bio-based and plant-derived materials. The company sells about 1 billion happy meals each year, so that will be a lot of plastic being reduced from just the toys alone. Our Drum A Di Gate initiative seeks to encourage residents to properly secure their Solid waste and enhance the aesthetician of their perspective communities. As we kick off 2021, let us start off on the right foot and ensure that we all take responsibilities in in making sure we reduce little in the community and everything in between. Residents can place their Christmas tree out during regular collection day until Friday, Jan. 15th. If your tree is larger than 2.13 metres (7 ft.), you need to cut it in half for collection. Please ensure trees are free of tinsels, ornaments and plastic bags and that they are placed off the road and snow banks so collection staff can access them safely. Since our Joint Operation Centre is still closed due to COVID-19, City has implemented a temporary bin exchange program by home delivery. Those who need to replace broken City-issued blue boxes and green bins with City logo can do so by requesting an exchange and arranging delivery by visiting vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281.
