This quote resonates with me, and I’m guessing many of you who strive for a healthier lifestyle will also vibe with it. I want to stress that it’s important to remember that labelling food as “bad” can create an unhealthy relationship with eating, but let’s quickly unpack what “eating badly” really means. Labelling food as “bad” can actually be problematic. It oversimplifies the complexity of our dietary needs and creates unnecessary guilt around eating. Instead, let’s think about “eating badly” as having a diet that doesn’t nourish us mentally and physically, varies from person to person, and depends on individual circumstances. Consider this: Food is not just fuel. It’s culture, pleasure, and a means to connect with others. What might be “bad” for one person could be perfectly fine for another, depending on their health, lifestyle, and even their emotional state. For instance, a slice of cake enjoyed at a celebration isn’t “bad”—it’s part of a balanced, tasty life. You should recognize that some diets can indeed be very poor, lacking essential nutrients. I advocate for variety and balance rather than rigid rules. Enjoying a diverse range of foods in moderation will help ensure you get the nutrients you need while also enjoying your meals and helping you create sustainable eating habits. So, instead of focusing on “bad” foods, focus on how you can make your eating experiences more enriching and nourishing. Food is an opportunity to fuel our bodies and connect with the world around us. Let’s not waste it by being overly critical or restrictive. A rainy Sunday is a good time to make soup and batches of easy healthy snacks and quick breakfasts for the week ahead. We love these Apricot Pistachio Energy Bites.
