The cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), also known as wild geranium, is in bloom! Due to this plant's styptic properties (the ability to stop bleeding), cranesbill is typically considered a Venus plant, but the herb's astringency gives it potential for binding spells. This combination makes cranesbill especially effective for binding love spells. Cranesbill gets its common name from the shape of the seed pod, which acts like a spring to throw the seeds away from the plant to help it spread. Cranesbill is related to herb robert and has been used a substitute for that plant in magic and in medicine (but it doesn't have a bad smell like herb robert). Great as a groundcover around hedges and a friend to several species of bees, cranesbill is also known as spotted geranium, wood geranium, wild geranium, alum root, alum bloom, shameface, rockweed, crow foot, and - wonderfully - old maid's nightcap. Here in Southern New England, cranesbill is currently in flower. These pictures are from a recent walk around Cumberland Monastery. An open woodland plant, cranesbill likes light shade or even partial sun (in cooler areas), so you'll often see it on the edges of paths. It is native to eastern North America, from Quebec south to Alabama and west to Oklahoma and South Dakota. We have cranesbill seeds available on our website, as well as the seeds of many other types of plants that Witches, Pagans, and mystics of all kinds – and lots of other folks, too – have used and learned from. #cranesbill #wildgeranium #geraniummaculatum #witchingherbs #wildflowers #woodland #magick #wortcunning #growyourown #metaphysicalshop #witchlife #alchemyworks #alchemyworksmaterialsofmagic

I've heard it said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I don't know about all of that, but I do know my favorite path to the river is unpaved and absolutely lousy with wild geraniums, and it just might be the way to heaven, or at least as close as you can get in this neck of the woods. Native Plant Spotlight: Wild Geranium Geranium maculatum is a perennial and native throughout the eastern half of the U.S. In the wild it is mostly found in wooded areas, but it also thrives in full-partial sun as well. It prefers medium to medium dry soil that’s rich in organic matter. Wild geranium will grow ~12 inches tall and produce purple flowers late spring - early summer. About a month after blooming, the seed capsules appear. The seed capsules have a central piece attached to a base and resemble a cranes head, which is where the geranium gets the common name of cranesbill or cranesbill geranium. The seed pods explode when ripe and catapult the seeds 10-30 feet away. This plant spreads readily and will form an attractive ground cover. It’s a great early nectar and pollen source for our native bees, and also attracts butterflies & other pollinators. . . . #wildacre #wildacreoh #smallbusiness #lexingtonohio #plantnative #nativeohiopollinatorplants #conservation #biodiversity #protectthepollinators #plantsforpollinators #plantnative #nativeflowers #wildgeranium #geraniummaculatum #getoutside

I was so psyched to get wild geranium this year from @onplants.ca . More psyched that it was still blooming when it arrived! Wild geranium (Geranium maculatum) is a low growing perennial and can handle SHADE, perfect for under our mature Japanese Maple in the front garden. Growing up, I remember my mom having one of these in her garden. Otherwise, the geraniums we normally see are those deep red funny smelling ones sold in seasonal planters that are treated as annuals in Ontario. #wildgeranium #geraniummaculatum #ontarionativeplants #ontariogardening #hamontgardens #nativespecies #shadegarden #purple #flowersofinstagram #geraniums

Wild geranium, geranium maculatum, is a native woodland flower that likes partial sunlight the best but can tolerate a range of sunlight conditions. After it flowers, the foliage stays around. It can reseed itself somewhat so it makes a great plant to be in a shade garden you want it to naturalize. #wildgeranium #geraniummaculatum #nativeplantgarden #wildlifegarden #nativeshadegarden

Some things I’ve learned work in pulling together native landscaping: Layers, repetition, time. Layers: Truly know the height of plants when they’re in their ideal location and put the big guys towards the back. Repetition: Place plants in large drifts with your layer info and have at it again. Time: not all plants or plant owners are on the same timeline. Some plants leap quickly, others it’s almost a 3 year waiting game. Not all plant owners are willing to wait it out. But the ones that do reap the reward. Happy 4th Birthday, Hinsdale Garden. I’m so lucky I get to see you grow and tend to your needs. Your owners are oh so patient.

Geranium maculatum, commonly known as wild geranium or spotted geranium, is a native perennial plant found in woodlands and meadows of eastern North America. It’s prized for its delicate pink to lavender flowers and distinctive palmate leaves. As a garden plant, it’s valued for its ability to attract pollinators and its low-maintenance nature. It makes a great groundcover or green mulch for both sun and shade. This plant is a major host species with over 25 types of butterflies and moths utilizing the foliage. Wild Geranium, (Geranium maculatum), is certainly one of our desirable but underutilized natives for the garden. Blooming profusely with pink-lavendar, five-petaled flowers in late spring and staying in bloom for about six weeks. A bright spot in the spring garden; loved by bees and butterflies. Colonizes by rhizome slowly, but not at all aggressive. Found mostly in woodlands throughout the state, tolerates a wide range of light conditions; blooms in shade but will survive more sun with added moisture. Wild geranium, Geranium maculatum, is a clump-forming native perennial here in Missouri, that has five-petaled flowers that bloom in the spring for 6–7 weeks. The flowers can be white, pink, or purple and are saucer-shaped with bright lilac pink colors. The fruit is about 1 in long and shaped like a crane's bill (another common name). Wild geranium prefers moist, humus-rich soil but can tolerate average, well-drained soil. It does best in part shade or shade, and flowers more prolifically in full sun. I don't think I can have too many of this great plant! #wildgeranium #geraniummaculatum #nativeplants #grownative

Wild Geranium - Geranium maculatum - also known as Spotted Geranium or Wood Geranium. April 23, 2024 at Walls of Jericho, Jackson County, Alabama. A native perennial of Geraniaceae (the Geranium Family). Has showy, pink to lavender to rose purple, rarely white, five-petaled flowers, 1.0-1.4 inch across, April-June. Grows 12-24 inches tall. Leaves are 4-5 inches wide, have 3-5 narrow lobes deeply toothed at the tips. Found in rich, open, wooded slopes in most of the eastern U.S. as well as southeastern Canada. Can be abundant. Has become naturalized in Europe. Frequently cultivated. Numerous cultivars have been developed. Other common names include Astringent Root, Chocolate Flower, Crowfoot, Alum Root, Alum Bloom, Woodland Geranium, Dove's Foot, Old Maid's Nightcap, and Shameface. The thick, tannin-rich roots were once used as an astringent and to stop bleeding as well as in other medicinal uses. Geranium maculatum (Wild Geranium). Some pleasing variability in the Wild Geranium plants in the garden. The older plants (Photos #1 and #2) are exhibiting the more common purplish flower color and leaf size, including leaf margins with some small lobes and coarse teeth. By comparison, there are two younger plants (Photos #3 and #4) that have a much more lavender flower color (even lighter in person), and leaves that are about five times larger and with far less lobes and teeth. Only time will tell if this can be attributed to genetic differences or plant age/maturity. All of these plants were previously purchased and are of unknown ecotype. I’m starting to get some very young, self-sown plants pop up in the area, so it’ll be interesting to see what they look like as they mature. Wild Geranium is such a beautiful and easily-grown perennial that I think every garden with a sunny/partly sunny spot and well-drained soil in the Eastern US needs to plant this! Wild Geranium is also an important pollinator and host plant. You may have to protect the new foliage from bunnies and deer but I don’t think it is their favorite. Native to most of the eastern half of the US. Highly recommended! #geraniummaculatum #garden #gardening #gardeningforwildlife #collectorsgarden #tomsgardenhaven #perennials #nativeplants #plantnatives #pollinatorplants #butterflygarden #butterflygardening #homegrownnationalpark

The imperative to talk about what plants do for the ecosystem they are going to be part of and not what they look like is a pressing issue if we want to support habitat for wildlife in our outdoor spaces. From an ecological perspective, if we consider the reason for the plants, we change the way we use them. This approach is different than the old-school ornamental gardening tradition of collecting and arranging plants based on their color and form for a particular gardening aesthetic. In my latest blog post called Native Plants are Not Ornaments www.nurturenativenature.com/post/native-plants-are-not-yard-ornaments I profile Geranium maculatum (spotted or wild geranium) and Geranium caroliniana (Carolina geranium) as an example of two native plants that are treated very differently based on their looks and growing habits, even though from a functional perspective wildlife finds the habitat value of both the same. In metro Atlanta, the National Wildlife Federation site that ranks native plants according to the number of butterfly and moth caterpillars that use them as a host makes no distinction between the two. They both host 27 caterpillar species! This means the common and “weedy” Carolina geranium that grows everywhere is an equally valuable habitat plant as the more refined spotted geranium. It seems like a win-win for nature to just let Carolina geranium grow wherever you are trying to restore habitat. The pocket prairie in the photo is my little rewilded front yard in the fall. There are no non-native plant ornaments to be found! I’ve also included a photos of the showy Geranium maculatum and a video of the Geranium caroliniana growing along with other hardy native plants including rose mock vervain (Glandularia canadensis), lance-leaf coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata), and America aloe (Agave virginica) #nativeplants #pocketprairie #nativeplantfunction #rewilding #geraniummaculatum #geranium caroliniana #coexistwithnature #nurturenativenature
