Positive affirmations were introduced to me by my life coach @heather_coaching_services . She asked to write my own affirmation; mentioning something I was struggling to get others to understand; “ 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 “ “ 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 “ I wrote these on a mirror in red lipstick. For weeks I would just reading words. Seeing the image in the mirror rather than the meaning. I’d had a bad relationship with mirrors for over 20 yrs at that point, so not only was it words I didn’t believe, I saw a reflection I hated everyday. It was a mental challenge. My persistence paid off. It pushed me. The Affirmations started to guide me into a positive focus. It made me realise who I was & reminded me of all the qualities I already knew about myself. They were true. The change from this simple routine was empowering. There is something beautiful about connecting with yourself on a deeper, more authentic level. The power of affirmations rely on strength. Strength - To read them, to repeat them & to find connection in them. No matter the emotion. No matter the struggle. No matter how many tears fall down your face. The use of affirmations, encourages positive mental change. It increases confidence and aids in controlling negative feelings; failure or frustration. They are a mechanism to turn to in times of struggle; to seek clarity. Affirmations help to control your mindset & emotions. #ItsAllMaya #wordsforWednesday #myentrepreneuriallife #Enabling vs. #Empowering Many times at any event, whilst introducing my work, people mention things like "they are into empowering women." I find this very daunting, and I curl up within me. The term Empowerment has become synonymous with Employment and sometimes Enablement. Every other business that supports women or is women run is talked about as one women empowerment centre. I, for one, find this quite misrepresented and misinterpreted. Empowerment is within one self. Enablement is more to do with external factors. You enable your women to an extent that they believe they have the power. Many times, as leaders, we micro-manage and detail every little breath that the staff has to take. Mistakes will happen, and let them make those learning-errors too. They would have learned after this experience, and what you get in turn is a pair of hands and a head to rely on. What the person gets is confidence to do that work and an enhanced self-worth and esteem to try something new again. When it comes to employing them, regular conversations with them on how they use their money, how they control it, opens their mind to think about their salary as "their's" and the possibility that they can exercise their decision to spend that money as they choose to. These are simple manifestations of the way somebody can be enabled. Once this is done, you are empowering the person to think and make a choice. And is it not this that we call Empowerment? I , for one, choose to clarify that we are trying to enable them by way of employment. They will themselves be empowered sometime later when the time comes calling.
