A few fun facts about bilingualism! 💜✨ There are many myths associated with bilingualism, especially when it comes to neurodivergent children or children with language delays 🧠 Caregivers are often advised to switch to the majority language (English, here in the US) and to avoid speaking more than one language at home. This has NOT been shown to “fix” language delays. Families often wonder if using more than one language will confuse the child and this is has also not been shown to be the case! So, embrace the language diversity! Embrace the home language. Your child will actually benefit much more than you think 💫. . . #LearningToPlay #LTP #autism #autismmom #autismdad #autismparent #autistic #positiveparenting #neurodivergent #momtips #play #playislearning #toddler #toddlers #toddlerdevelopment #toddlertips #language #languagedelay #parentingtips #inclusion #neurodiversity #community #toddlers #behavior #parentcoaching #childdevelopment #parenting #family #disability

Meltdowns are hard. It breaks my heart each time I witness my sweet boy having one. As a result, I try my best to prevent them. Here are some practical tips you can try to help your kids cope better in social situations 👉🏾 During social situations, if your child can, teach & encourage them to use signals or words to communicate when they are feeling overwhelmed. If they can't, observe their body language to know if they're already feeling uncomfortable and respect their feelings. 💐 And of course, most importantly... Be patient, be flexible, educate others about your child's sensory needs, and consider working with an occupational therapist who specializes in sensory integration for tailored strategies and interventions to help your child manage sensory sensitivities. 💯 💭 How do you prepare for social situations as an autism parent? Share them in the comments below & help a fellow mom out! 🩷 . . . . . . #specialneedsmomlife #actuallyautistic #specialneedsmommy #specialneedsmomma #autismwarrior #specialneedsmoms #differentnotless #autismadvocate #blackmommies #momssupportmoms #mommymode #momsunite #realmoms #supportmoms #blackmomsbelike #autismfamilies #autismparent #autismmomma #autismmoms #autismmomlife #autismmom #specialneedseducation #specialneedsmama #specialneedsmum #inclusionmatters #asd

Curious...is your autistic child sensory seeking or sensory avoiding...or both? My son is actually both. Most autistic children, teens and adults have sensory needs! So how do you support your child with those needs? Do you know all of following areas contribute to sensory input and stimulus that our bodies receive on a daily basis? 1. Visual 2. Auditory 3. Olfactory 4. Tactile 5. Taste 6. Vestibular 7. Proprioceptive 8. Interoceptive. If your child is sensory seeking or sensory avoiding, be sure to read all the ways you can support them in these areas in Dr. Sonja de Boer's article this month! She gives great ideas and explanations on items autistic children can use in these areas and also explains self-stimulation. It was neat to see all the different tools available for our kids! Resources and information that matters for parents raising their autistic child ⬇️⬇️ Autism Advocate Parenting Magazine - access our Autism Resource Library for Parents and Professionals! Grab it here ⬇️ www.autismadvocateparentingmagazine.com @autismadvocateparentingmag link also in IG bio If you would like to join our text community to receive autism tips, uplifting messages, humor and supports, text “AUTISM” to 289-205-9934 Follow our IG @autismadvocateparentingmag for more autism educational content from Top Experts if you are raising an autistic child. #autismacceptancemonth #autismteacher #autismdads #autismmama #autismcommunity #autismdad #autismwarrior #autismparents #autismrocks #autismmum #autismclassroom #autismjourney #autismfamilies #autismkids #autismmommy #autismadvocate #autismstrong #autismworld #autismawarenesday #asdteacher #autismstars #autismawareness #autismproud #autismparent #differentnotless #autismeducation #asdmom #neurodiversity #autismmoms

Teeth brushing can be a real challenge for some autistic kids. Whether it’s the feeling of the brush, the taste, textures and smell of the paste, or the feeling of invasiveness that comes from having a brush in their mouth. For lots of kids, whilst teeth brushing might be a challenge when young, as the years go by it gets easier. They understand the importance of it, the health benefits, and it gradually becomes a part of their daily routine. For many families like mine, it’s not always that simple. For years it was a real challenge, still is for Jude. But in recent years with Tommy we’ve established a good routine. We have a slow 5-1 countdown helping him know how long it’s going to last. We use a 3 sided toothbrush to try and cover the most area in the shortest time. And we found a toothpaste that he liked and has used for years. Which was great, except it was a toothpaste for 6-8 year olds, something we should have moved on from years ago. Each time we tried, it was met with a lot of resistance, and scared of upsetting the good routines we’d established, we kept going with the one he liked. Since last year, I decided that every time the tube would run out I’d try a more age appropriate paste. Tommy rejected it each time, and I’d just get a new 6-8 tube instead. Until that is, a couple of weeks ago, when we had a major breakthrough. I tried the adult version of the 6-8 toothpaste, like I’d done maybe 10 times before, and he accepted it. We brushed like usual, and he’s been using it every night since 🎉 There’s been so many moments of progress like this over the years. Moments that have come much later than they were ‘supposed to.’ Progress in things that I could have been beating myself up about because they hadn’t happened yet. Stressed about. Instead I’ve learnt to adjust, go with what works, whilst also knowing that just because my boys can’t do something (or won’t accept something) today, doesn’t mean things won’t change in the future. Keep going 🫶 #nonverbalautism #learningdisabilities #autismparent #autismdad #autismmom

📺 This week we’re talking all about media & gestalt language processing. If you missed out last post, we discussed the pros and cons to screen time with GLPs. Today we’ve teamed up with @that.anxious.momma a parent of a gestalt language processor who took notes on what they noticed based on the different shows their child was watching. ⭐️ As you can see through these language samples and parent notes, as the media the child was watching changed, so did the language that they were using. The earlier show was dysregulating, and the child picked up phrases that weren’t easily mitigable as well as stuck single word gestalts. ⭐️ The latter shows were more natural, applicable to their daily life and easily mitigable whole phrases which was helpful in them moving through the stages of gestalt language development. 💙 Follow us @meaningfulspeech to be a changemaker. We share the latest research and resources in gestalt language development, play and neurodiversity affirming speech-language therapy (parents and professionals) 💛Find our free resources, courses, blog, Marketplace and GLP handbook at meaningfulspeech.com

Looking for ways to engage your kids this summer? Need tips to share with families? Here's one... The summer is a great time to focus on ADLs (activities of daily living). With likely less on our plates, parents/caregivers can support neurodiverse kids in becoming independent in daily life routines, such as: • washing/brushing/styling their hair 🧴 • making their bed 🛏 • making their favorite food or snack • tying shoes 👟 • brushing teeth efficiently • buying items/understanding change with store purchases 💲 Make it fun: watch videos, have the child help in making visuals/pictures to support these routines, get siblings involved, and celebrate small wins 🥳 Hope this is helpful! Let us know your ideas in the comments...

Imagine this: Four whole days immersed in the world of ultimate frisbee, with my son capturing all my focus. 🥏💫 For a parent like me, who navigates the delicate balance between a neurotypical son and an autistic daughter with a rare genetic disease, these moments are as precious as they are rare. This brief escape wasn’t just about cheering from the sidelines; it was a revelation in relaxation. No hypervigilance, just pure, undiluted joy and connection. It was a reminder that sometimes, giving 100% of your attention to one child isn’t about neglecting the other; it’s about cherishing the unique bond you share with each of them. I have one baby at home not well…which means hot chocolate and coffees all round today! What started off as Heidi suffering from being too hot (got to love that part of ASD) has ended up with her having a cough…no idea where it came from as she has been at home since Monday!! I had a brief chat with the SENCO about finding some form of uniform that Heidi will be comfortable in but also not get too hot…now starts the game of trial and error until we find something…although I did see a potential dress in @sainsburys that *may* tick the boxes…I just need to find it and feel it to make sure it ticks Heidi’s boxes!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 #asd #asdmama #asdlife #austim #autismlife #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismparent #autismcommunity #sensory #sensoryneeds #sensoryseeker

Lord of the manor 😂 • Harrogate’s a bit posh for me and this monkey bum! But hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will have a full AuDHD diagnosis recognised by the NHS! • It’s been a long and challenging 8 years, some of the challenges for George have been awful, forced into a broken education system that isn’t designed for boys like my wonderful, energetic, eloquent monkey. • And just as we close this chapter for George the next one starts for Billy. Blessed with 2 neurospicy boys, hopefully the system doesn’t fail Billy like it did George. Early recognition, diagnosis and intervention really does change the trajectory of those with neurodiversity’s. • #neurospicy #neurodiversity #adhd #autism #autismparent #dobetter #diagnosis #blueeyedboy #adventures #harrogate

Do you have an autistic teen? See below!! My son is turning 14 years old this year and I have been reflecting heavily on his future and support... In fact, I was just getting my hair done this week and coincidentally, I met a woman beside me who helps autistic teens transition to adulthood. She helps them get set up to hold a job and she provides them on-the-job training and coaching to help them successfully in their role. This isn't the first person I've met in this field. And there's a reason for that.. I already know my autistic son is going to take longer to be prepared for the workforce. Most autistic children will struggle in this area. So I've already started connecting and finding out what is available for my son in the future and preparing him. The transition out of high school can be a challenging time for all teens. There are fewer supports and more expectations. This time can be particularly hard for autistic young adults because there is an added responsibility of finding new support systems, and not just for employment. Where do parents start? A team of experts from the Center for Autism Research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) give all the information a parent could want in an article they wrote in the May Issue of Autism Advocate Parenting Magazine. The article discusses daily living, community involvement, healthcare and even gives a ‘Transition to Adulthood’ checklist. If you have an autistic teen and are concerned for their future, be sure to check it out! Reminder... You know your child better than anyone. You know when they're tired. You know when they're hungry. You know when they're about to meltdown. But so often we defer to the "experts" and just follow the shoulds of life. Part of your parenting journey is to learn to truly trust your intuition... that mommy (or daddy gut) that we often ignore. The power comes when you learn to listen to your inner knowing. I will often ask the question or problem that's most pressing before I go to bed and I will often wake up with the answer I seek.

Last week one of my posts drew a bunch of comments about the variety of ways that PDA children and teens interact with and are impacted by screens. I wrote this to provide more nuance to the discussion. I hope it's helpful, and also that it can serve as a reminder that we can step out of the conversations about screens as “good” or “bad,” and the notion that our parenting decisions are “good” or “bad.” It's totally ok to relax out of a particular parenting philosophy and do what objectively works to support your family, find long-term peace and help your unique child or teen to thrive. And *you* will always be the best judge of how to do that. ❤️ 💕 Are you ready to move beyond information about PDA and start making moves to stop hating your life? 😉 If so, I want to offer you a powerful next step: our signature, 3-month Paradigm Shift Program™. This is the only LIVE program we offer. It is an opportunity to: 👉Gain crystal clarity about exactly what is going on with your child (even if it turns out to be more than PDA). 👉Master the practical skills needed to face any situation you may find yourself in with your child or teen, regardless of age or expression of the nervous system. 👉 Heal in a group of like-minded families making big moves to change their lives and move towards stability and thriving PDA children and teens. Enrollment for the next cohort begins in August 2024. Use the link in our bio to join the waitlist. Or, if you're not sure if your child is PDA and my free Clarity Masterclass can help you figure it out.
