What a revelation is London's Whitehall Gardens! Swipe left ⬅️ and feast your eyes on four photos featuring the exquisite tulips. Overlooking the gardens is Whitehall Court, one contiguous building but consisting of two separate constructions, both in Renaissance Revival styles. The south end was designed by Thomas Archer and A. Green and constructed as a block of luxury apartments in 1884 while the north end, the National Liberal Club ("NLC" or "the club"), was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1887. Much of Whitehall Court is now the Royal Horseguards Hotel. In 2015, Alex Younger, the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) unveiled a blue plaque to Mansfield Cumming, MI6's founder, at 2 Whitehall Court. At various times between 1911 and 1922, flats 53 and 54 - on the building's seventh floor - served not just as Cumming's home, but as the headquarters of what was originally known as the Foreign Section of the Secret Service Bureau. The NLC meanwhile was, at the time of its construction, the largest clubhouse ever built. Waterhouse's design blended French, Gothic and Italianate elements, with heavy use of Victorian Leeds Burmantofts Pottery tilework. The clubhouse is built around load-bearing steelwork concealed throughout the structure, and it was this resilient structure which enabled the building to survive a direct hit in the Blitz. Waterhouse's work extended to designing the club's furnishings, down to the Dining Room chairs. The NLC was also the first London building to incorporate a lift, and the first to be entirely lit throughout by electric lighting. NLC members were so enamoured with the modern wonder of electric lighting that the original chandeliers featured bare light bulbs, whose distinctive hue was much prized at the time. CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION 1987 – GRADE II* LISTED WHITEHALL COURT Working on behalf of The British Constructional Steelwork Association Limited (BCSA), MCS was appointed to carry out extensive refurbishment of their head office at 4 Whitehall Court. The Grade II* Listed Whitehall Court was built between 1884 and 1887 and consists of two separate buildings joined to form one contiguous structure. The building is built in a Châteuesque Style, which is a revival architectural style based on the French Renaissance Architecture of the Châteaux of the Loire Valley. The South end, and incidentally the major part of Whitehall Court, was designed by Thomas Archer and Arthur Green and constructed as a block of luxury residential apartments in 1884. Archer and Green were also responsible for designing the Hyde Park Hotel. The North end, occupied by the National Liberal Club, was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1887.
