Today, we are celebrating #fishfriday and #endangeredspeciesday by sharing another popular resident at SSC, the lined seahorse. Yes, with swim bladders to float in the water and using gills to breathe, seahorse are fish! The #linedseahorse (hippocampus erectus) grows between 3–7 in (7.5–18 cm). They are found in shallow, sheltered areas such as seagrass beds, coral reefs, and mangrove habitats. #Seahorse are primarily located in the western Atlantic Ocean. This small marine bony fish has a distinctive appearance with a slender body, a prehensile tail, and a characteristic coronet (or crown) on its head. The coloration and pattern varies; including shades of brown, yellow, green, and red, providing effective camouflage. Also, known for their unique reproductive behavior with the male carrying the babies. This species faces threats due to habitat destruction, pollution, and overexploitation for the aquarium trade and traditional medicine. At least 35% of all seahorse species are #endangered, vulnerable, or near threatened, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Lined seahorse, found in our Restoring Reefs exhibit, are listed as a #vulnerablespecies and at high risk of extinction.

Japan’s new whaling ‘mother ship’ is set to sail on its first voyage later this month as the industry hopes to inspire new demand for whale meat. The ship, named Kangei Maru, will be capable of sailing for months at a time and travel distances of over 8,000 miles. The vessel adopts the mother ship hunting process, in which a fleet of smaller boats are used to catch the whales, before their bodies are loaded on to the mother ship for carving, freezing, and storage. The 9,300-ton vessel was built by private company Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha at a cost of over $47 million, and is part of the company’s wider push to spark a renewed interest in Japan for whale meat. “Unless a new mother ship is built, we cannot pass on our whaling culture to the next generation,” the company’s president, Hideki Tokoro, previously explained to the press. The new ship will aim to increase the country’s annual haul of whales, with last year’s catch figures including 83 minke, 187 Bryde’s, and 24 Sei whales. Ahead of the Kangei Maru’s maiden voyage, the Japanese government announced this week that it will add large fin whales to its list of commercial whaling species. I've been lucky enough to swim with the adults and witness the hatchlings emerge from their nest. Staff Introduction: John Tomerini is one of our Conservation Officers. John is involved in searching for and protecting Golden-shouldered Parrot nests at Artemis Station. John has a keen interest in the many aspects of land management in the Far North Queensland area. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Environmental Science from the University of Queensland, John has worked with a wide variety of relevant land management stakeholders around the Cape and greater FNQ area, including QPWS, pastoralists and indigenous ranger groups. He enjoys all things outdoors, whether it be fishing, hiking, exploring historical sites or working under the sun. For high value nesting areas, we cannot afford to damage termite mounds (within which parrots excavate their nest) and so clearing is done by hand using chainsaws and clearing saws, with herbicide application limited to the cut stump. What we see is not always the actual picture... This Nicobar Pigeon aka the "Ghost of the Shadows" put my editing skill to a test. If I have to narrate the circumstances under which I triggered my shutters, then I would describe it as one of the most unfavorable ones of my Birding life where I was given around a minute, not only to spot this amazing beauty roosting amid dense darkness but to adjust my camera settings, position myself favourably and last but not the least, trigger the shutters. Well, a minute is equal to 60 seconds, which seems to be a lot at first sight but this tenure was nothing compared to the unpreparedness I had to go through. To cut the long story short, when I was repenting of my incompetence, our Guide console me that we are extremely lucky to have a minute of time because in general, the visiting Birders, if at all lucky, figure them out only in a blink of an eye. And, there are even instances where people keep coming back solely to photograph this 'ghost of the shadows', yet they return empty handed. Well, still cursing my incompetence, I wish to go back to have a decent record of this illusive rare species.
