Continuing our family stories around #rarediseaseday this week, this is Poppy. Her mum Hannah says that when Poppy was born she was well until day two but she then wouldn’t take a bottle and had to have a NG tube placed. On day five, it was noticed Poppy had strange breathing rhythms so she was transferred to special care. She was found to have a bicuspid aortic valve, hypotonia, feeding issues and a small birth weight. The special care doctors arranged genetic testing and Poppy was diagnosed with #KoolendeVries Syndrome. Hannah goes on to say that since diagnosis Poppy has also been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. She now has a PEG but is starting to eat orally and loving her food! Poppy attends weekly physio as having hypotonia she cannot sit or stand yet. Poppy is under many other different consultants, one of which is at Alder Hey who saved Poppy’s life. She’s very nervous of people who she hasn’t seen in a while and takes time to get used to knowing them again but she is the most happiest most loving little girl and her siblings adore her. She loves Hey Duggee and Yakka Dee, playing with her toys and is a great night time sleeper! We’ve had a great week out and about raising awareness for #rarediseasday2024. • Anita and Charlotte (two of Unique’s information officers) joined an event at the Royal Holloway, University of London talking to school students • Sarah (CEO) and Sophie (Chair of Trustees) attended the parliamentary reception, meeting up with Unique Patron, Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones and many others! • Unique member Luca, and his school held a #rarediseaseday parent coffee morning to raise awareness and funds • Craig (our COO) spoke to medical students at UCL Medical School about what life is like for those (like his daughter) living with genetic disorders #UniqueandRare
On a rare day that only comes every 4 yrs is also Rare Disease Day! I don't just have one child who is rare but instead I have two children who are rare for different reasons. Roo is as rare as they come..his genetic condition is so rare that it has no name. Many years of testing did find a mutation on his RAC1 gene. His specific mutation means he is the only one in the entire world with it. So he is ultra rare! But sadly even though we have managed to find some children with mutations on the RAC1 gene too all their symptoms vary so much and there is hardly any information written about it. I set up a FB page for children and families with RAC1 mutations so that we can keep in touch. I thought this would eventually become Roo official diagnosis but one of Roo consultants have said that its unlikely to be the cause of most of his issues and that he has another rare condition that they have yet to find but we have exhausted all testing for now apparently so we have to wait till the future where new tests might be the one we finally get a diagnosis. Roo does have a lot of other small diagnosises one of which is rare - IIH which he is currently in remission from. But all these small diagnosis are part of an unknown genetic condition. It's really hard not knowing what the future holds, what his prognosis is especially the past 2 yrs when he has started to develop a lot more issues . But despite being so rare he is very happy, stubborn cheeky boy who loves to help with whatever you are doing. He finds great joy in the simplest things and never fails to bring a smile to your face! Fox is 1 in 40000 who has Waardenburg Syndrome, which is a rare syndrome that causes various symptoms. The last day of February is Rare Disease Day. When C was 2.5 we got the results of her blood investigations which confirmed she had a microdeletion. I had never heard of the condition before and had to do a lot of googling to find @unique_charity to understand more. We found out a month later that the condition is inherited from me and my dad. In 2021, we found out B had it. 2p16.3 microdeletion syndrome. We are missing a tiny portion of genes in the 16.3 region of the short arm (p) of our second chromosomes affecting the NRXN1 gene. Symptoms include global development delay and learning disabilities, autism and ADHD, speech delays, epilepsy, schizophrenia, hypermobility, and coordination issues. Both C & B display differently. C didn't meet milestones like an NT child. She didn't sit up til 9 months, crawl until 11 months, and she couldn't walk until she was nearly 2. She struggles to regulate her emotions and has extreme reactions to things that upset her. I'm talking screaming fits, self harming, and sobbing over something small. She is easily attached to objects and people and takes rejection badly. She is hypermobile and gdd and struggles to walk, run, balance without falling over. B met milestones aside from speech. He sat at 4-5 months, crawled at 6, and walked at 15 months. He has good fine and gross motor skills, although he is hypermobile and falls a lot. He's also diagnosed autistic and we are starting the process of a future ADHD diagnosis in the next few weeks because waitlists for assessments are years long in our area. When we first found out about it, I didn't know what it meant for C or how her quality of life would be. I have a 50% chance of passing it on as do my two kiddos. Some professionals weren't sure if she would be able to learn as well as she has done. I had to fight to get her EHCP and support in school. For a while, I did blame myself, but the more I learned, the more I accepted about myself. I always felt odd growing up, and this answered a lot of questions for me. Chloe shares her daughter Violet's story of discovering how she has Cat eye syndrome (CES), and how UNIQUE has provided support. “I have a 2 year old daughter, Violet, who was diagnosed with Cat eye syndrome in August 2023. She has delayed speech, is small in size and has issues with her kidneys whereby only one functions. It has been difficult dealing with the diagnosis and understanding Violet so we have recently been learning Makaton as a family to help with her communication and understand her” “I love being a member of the Unique community as there are people who understand what I am going through with the diagnosis and are able to lift me on bad days. We would love everyone to comment on and share your experiences below, to help share your unique stories within our rare community. Amy is mum to Hettie. When Hettie was 2, Amy became aware that her daughter had autism. This led to genetic testing and being diagonsed with a rare genetic condition. Here is her story: "Hettie is 11 and was diagnosed with autism aged 2 after experiencing developmental regression. Due to the regression, her then diagnosing paediatrician suggested genetic testing. Her genetic results showed a rare chromosome disorder called a 1q44 duplication. As there were only 5 other children recorded on the international genetic database (at that time) with the same genetic code, it was not certain if the condition itself resulted in her being autistic. The data did show that each child with Hettie’s chromosomal duplication had autism, a learning disability (of varying levels) and other co-occurring conditions like epilepsy. It was helpful to have this information, and to know that Hettie would be seen at certain points in her life by the genetics team to discuss how she may be affected by her rare genetic condition." “Hettie was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. She has severe intellectual disabilities, attends a special needs school and has started using an AAC device to aid communication; as she is mainly nonspeaking. She is a very happy girl.
