So with @speedystraps offering extra entries into his giveaway for a post with a story I knew this would be one of the watches to post, even though many of you know its story. This was Poppy's watch, my grandfather, a man greatly admired by family and many others in the community. He was the son of a Lebanese immigrant who made his way through West Virgina University and subsequently working with engineering and safety in coal mines, later on becoming mayor of a small town in WV. To sum it up, he was a legend in my eyes and someone who will always hold the title of "the best man I've ever known." Poppy wore this watch for years and years, unsure of when he stopped wearing it but he opted for easy reader Timex in his later years. One day visiting my grandparents, a good while before the watch addiction, I saw a ziploc bag full of old watches on the counter. I asked Poppy what he was doing with them and he something along the lines of "seeing if the pawn shop or jewelry store wants them." His next words were, "if you want them you can have them" and I knew what my answer was before he finished. The bag had probably 20 of my grandmother's and 20 of Poppy's watches in there, all jumbled in a tangle of metal. The bag sat for years in a closet until not long after. Poppy passed and after receiving his Timex, which started this watch bug. Remembering the bag of watches was like an epiphany, and this watch was in it, head and bracelet separated. I had never put a strap/bracelet on until this point but learned quickly. In doing my research, I learned the importance of the 7A28 movement from Seiko and how this was the first quartz powered, fully mechanical movement, which is awesome...but not as awesome as seeing pictures of Poppy holding me in his arms wearing this watch, and all the memories of golf and family outings with this on his wrist.
