Bealtaine 2024 – something was broken. Bealtaine is about more than putting logs on the Fire – but this this event has become a shadow of its meaning. Ancient Bealtaine Fires were co-created celebrations of life. When I first came 6 years ago, this Fireside was warm community made manifest and this event still has moments of sublime beauty... Positives; twas was full of beautiful people, workshops and stalls. There was a profound calm about the land. For me the dancefloor with @domhan_well then @bogbodiesband was the high point, such HEALING! (The Fire itself felt like the dessert). And let’s not forget that many attendees do have their eyes opened to Irish heritage.. But behind the scenes, things were off. Speaking ONLY for myself; I don’t feel respected as a Fire Artist – while I surely had fun, we got the same meager fee as last year (which was the first year we got paid at all) – Bealtaine, if you have increased ticket prices and can spend tens of thousands on pyrotechnics, you can afford to pay us properly.. and taking away our food vouchers this year was just stingy. Land Ownership; Uisneach, the spiritual centre of Ireland, is privately owned, usually not open to the people of Ireland like many other sacred sites are e.g. Tara… private ownership permits negative energy e.g. what happened to one true wisdom-keeper and elder who was ‘barred’ by the land owner for making a ceremonial offering… insane s**t. Techno and fireworks in the official procession? ‘Lads, how is this appropriate at Uisneach?’ Cultural commodification; the Fomorian forces of capitalist greed that have sold our land for mining, our waters for fishing and St. Patrick's Day for drinking.... They're now in our heart centre. The saddest example was later when we came to the Fire to sit in community as always and were roughly removed by a bunch of high vis security lads shouting about ‘Insurance!’ – shameful for the ancestors 😞 I was able to help revitalise the Fire with some chants, songs and mindfulness… but something was broken... Last weekend on a hill in the Irish midlands, thousands of people from all over the world came together to light a big fire and welcome in the summer…just like they have done for millennia. There is perhaps no other place in Ireland so closely associated with Bealtaine as the Hill of Uisneach in Co. Westmeath. At just over 180m, it is one of the highest hills in the midlands and affords extensive panoramic views across Ireland’s central plain; with up to 20 counties visible on a clear day. Its most ancient name ‘Uishnech Míde’ meaning ‘Middle Temple (or Hearth)’, probably refers to a huge rock on the southern slope of the hill, known as the ‘Ail na Mireann’ (Stone of Divisions). Surrounded by an ancient earthwork, the stone is said to mark the exact centre of Ireland, where Ériu, the spirit of the land, is said to reside. Legend has it, that It was on the Hill of Uisneach that Ériu met with the Sons of Míl and gave sovereignty of the land to the Gaels; asking in return, only that they name it after her. According to the Annals this mythical encounter between the Goddess and the Gaelic ancestors, took place during the time of Bealtaine. Central to the Bealtaine festivities was the fire itself. Historical sources tell us that the Bealtaine fires have been lit on the Hill of Uisneach since the Early-Medieval Era. However, the mythological sources would suggest the tradition is much older than that. According to the Dindshenchas (Lore of Places), it was a druid named Míde that lit the very first fire on the Hill; “which burned for seven years and across the land, every chief's hearth was lit from the fire at Uisneach”. The earliest attested Bealtaine tradition is the driving of cattle around the fire (or between fires) to cleanse and protect them as they are moved out to their summer pastures. Known as ‘Booleying’, this pastoral tradition of moving cattle onto higher ground during the summer months is the origin of Bealtaine. The Trees Return a Song of Stars. Like many, I can find myself arriving at an ancient site with worldly and mundane matters on my mind. Bills to pay and worries; you name it. But what can happen next is often unexplainable. I will forget or become unaware of a transition taking place before realising that I have become completely relaxed and ‘in-tune’ with the land or monument. It goes without saying that there is a relationship of sorts occurring, both on an unconscious level, and, maybe, in terms of expectation too. Perhaps I have come to identify ancient sites and places with calmness, for example. Walking through mountain forests to reach a place like Seefin can certainly help you forget the outside world. There is also a profoundness, some say sacredness, at these places. Again, materialists will argue that this is all created in the mind of the visitor and not part of the ritual landscape. And yet... Throughout history these sites have been chosen because of the belief that a transcendent essence was pre-existing. The monument was chosen for the land, not the other way around. The stones are placed purposefully in order to shelter and amplify something unnameable and beyond description. These megaliths were chosen for their shape, alignment and composition, perhaps circles, solstice and granite, all deeply considered before becoming the connecting physical bridge to something ethereal but always deeply known. A magical day & night as always. Welcoming in the light half of the year barefoot in the sun and by the light of the bonfire on sacred Irish ground with joy and ceremony fills mo chroí every year. We met wonderful people, sang healing songs in community, took part in soothing group holistic and spiritual activities, listened to enchanting folk stories, soaked in the beautiful views & the sun from the hill - the heart of Éire, honoured our heritage and ancestors, ate gorge vegan food, laughed, set our intentions for this half of the year & gave them over be cast into the fire, cheered and danced, enjoyed brilliant music and moving poetry, bought gorgeous hand made wares from lovely small business owners, met majestic animals, participated in group traditional crafts, connected to the land & fellow kindred souls and so much more.. what a day. We loved every second. So wonderful to celebrate and connect with kindred spirits on the @hill_of_uisneach this year for the Festival of Fires 🔥 For me this ancient celebration is too short, I’m pretty sure our our ancestors would have been dancing around the ceremonial flames for at least a week. Honoured to join the fire procession again along side such a talented team of fire artists. More pictures to follow.
