Last week I was rooting in the compost heap and discovered that some of this year's grass clippings had turned into a stinking slimy silage-smelling mess. Not good! But where to put it so that it can turn into something good? So of course the idea of a new bed got in my head. Here we go again! I need my head examined. But the compost bays DO need to be emptied so it's gotta be done at some stage anyway. The bad bit is that I know that I will be the one to do every single bit of work on it. But anyway. Yesterday I went ahead and dug out the shape of the new bed, around an existing small bed that doesn't do a whole lot. Some saved cardboard went down today, and I've started emptying out the compost onto that - but basically what's on top of the heaps, which is mostly the grass clippings, and nasturtiums that have just been hit by frost. This layer is very messy and not yet composted down, so will need a good covering of nicely composted stuff from further down the bins. I'm telling myself that if I do three barrows a day over the winter it will get done, but of course I have already done like seven barrowfulls today and can feel my back going already. Book 17 of 2023. Too Late to Stop Now by Allan Jones Let me start by stating that music is important to my life. I don't play music, but hearing a record for the first time, or seeing my favorite bands/singers live has such an affect on me. There's nothing that soothes my soul more. That's why I decided to check this book out. I'm a fan or music biographies, and music behind the scenes books. This is one of them. There are some great stories in this book. Sadly, most of them are self-indulgent about the author boasting about getting drunk or the lines of cocaine he did with the band. I understand that's part of the rock and roll world, but it's overkill with the author trying to take center stage in some stories. Where the book works, it tells some great stories of the singers/bands talking about how they formed, and behind the scenes of their albums/tours. This was a good book, but I wished for more of the essays that were great such as the ones told about John Cale, R.E.M., and The Clash.
