Featuring a pro-feminist plotline, it is the only film in the beach party genre to be directed by a woman (Stephanie Rothman). This film, along with Catalina Caper (which also starred Tommy Kirk), is among the last of the beach party films. The mainstay of the once-popular genre was the series of films by American International Pictures (AIP), starting with the surprise hit Beach Party in 1963 and ending with The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (a box-office flop) in 1966. Although AIP picked up distribution, It’s a Bikini World was not an AIP film. It was produced and originally distributed by Trans American Films under the title The Girl in Daddy’s Bikini. I watched OLD YELLER for the first time in a very, very long time. It is as great as I remember it! OLD YELLER is a hard one to revisit too often (that ending 😳), but it is so beautifully made. Did you know OLD YELLER was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress? Tommy Kirk really is remarkable in this (Beverly Washburn as Lisbeth is so charming too.) On this day in #Disney history - January 22, 1964: The live-action "scrambled egg-head" comedy The Misadventures of Merlin Jones is released in select U.S. cities. #MerlinJones, an intelligent college student, played by future Disney Legend #TommyKirk, experiments with hypnosis and creates a mind-reading machine, leading to incidents with a local judge. Former #Mouseketeer #AnnetteFunicello plays his girlfriend Jennifer (and sings the film's title song written by brothers Robert and Richard Sherman). The film will open nationwide in March. Filming took place in January 1963. Originally titled simply Merlin Jones, the film was intended as a two-part production for the 1963-64 season of the NBC television show Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. In March 1963, NBC was so pleased with Annette Funicello's performance in the film that it asked Disney to produce two more films with her character, and the film was released theatrically rather than airing on television. The film was a box office success bringing in $4 Million. E. Carton Walker, Disney's vice president in charge of advertising, commented that "nobody knows what a picture will do. Merlin Jones grossed $4 million ... and surprised everybody The following year a sequel "The Monkey's Uncle" featuring the Beach Boys in its opening title would be released. I did promise more content! I've no idea which magazine this is from, but I do know it must have been published sometime during the first half of 1966. I'm not 100% sure when this headshot was taken either (I'm so vague today! Call myself a fan?!! I'm a disgrace!!🤣) but I would take a guess at around the latter half of 1963, between Savage Sam and Mr Novak. Not for the first time, the press did their best to remind the public that the little lad from Old Yeller was now a grown-up!! A SHOW BUSINESS VETERAN, NO LESS, FOLKS!!!!! As a matter of fact, the poor love had been trying to make "Tom Kirk" happen since early 1962, as he felt he was by then too old to be known as "Tommy". Most of his later films (Track of Thunder, Unkissed Bride, Ride the Hot Wind etc etc) had him credited as Tom, and his final TV credit on The Streets of San Fransisco had him credited as "Thomas Kirk" — after all, by that time he was the ripe old age of 31!!! No, I can't remember that far back, either!!!🤣🤣🤣 Funnily enough, his final few film credits in the 80s-2000s had him revert to being credited as "Tommy Kirk"—25 years between screen credits must've changed his perspective over a lot of things!!🥰🥰 As Shakespeare said, "that which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." Hello folks!! I know it's been aaaages—unfortunately, getting settled in at the new improved Egghead Central here in God's Own City has been a much bigger and more stressful job than I expected. The boys and I are finally happy with how the new place looks, so I'm hoping to be back to business as usual with more posts and videos about this precious angel in the next week or so!!! I've been busy compiling stuff to post here over the coming months—I've got some lovely new footage and pictures to share, and loads of ideas for video edits too. All I need now is time and brain capacity to make 'em happen!!!!🤣🤣 In the meantime, I thought I'd share one of my favourite things—a Tom photo I hadn't seen before!!! I actually saved this in mid-July thinking "oh wow this is gorgeous—I'll post that in a minute!!" but as any of my fellow ADHDers will tell you, a minute is a very difficult unit of time to measure...!!!🤣🤣 This is a promo shot from 1963's Savage Sam, featuring both Toms (Sam was played by a hound dog named Tom Dooley! Quick trivia: Kevin Corcoran actually helped train Tom Dooley for the film, as it was his first film role) and Brad Weston as Ben Todd. I think Ben's character was SO underused in this film, he had a lovely warmth about him, and Brian Keith (Uncle Beck) had crazy good chemistry on-screen with him, I'd have loved to see their friendship fleshed out a bit more—certainly at the expense of certain other character arcs. 👀 It's no secret that Savage Sam is probably my favourite of Tom's films, and as I'm a day late and a dollar short for International Dog Day, I thought this one would be the most appropriate to come back to you all with!!!! I've missed you all loads!!
