We often joke that Louisiana has three temperatures: warm, hot and '10th level of hell.' Because of this, the turning of the seasons in my area is gradual and almost unnoticeable. My grandmother had many axioms about the seasons that she passed on to me. I live in the State of Texas in North America, decidedly in the diaspora of my northwest European ancestors. Branwen called to me, this beautiful goddess who left her homeland of Wales for Ireland. Her heart ached so far from home. In grief, in loneliness, abused, and homesick, she called to the starlings and asked one to fly to her homeland to send for her brother. Across land and sea and sky, the starling flew to carry her words to her brother, Bran the Blessed. I often think of Branwen as the Patroness of the Diaspora, the Goddess of Hiraeth. It is so easy to connect with her here, with a nostalgia for a land I have never even set foot on and have only visited in dreams, meditation, and journey work. The knights of Arthur are seeking Mabon, son of Modron. They first meet the Blackbird of Cilgwri (Descent), which guides them to the Stag (Confrontation). The stag does not know where Mabon is, but guides the knights to an animal that is still older, the Owl of Cwm Cawlwyd. The Owl of Cwm Cawlwyd is so old that she has seen a great valley filled with a wooded glen cut down by humans, regrow fully, cut down by men again, and regrow fully a third time. The Owl, like the Blackbird and the Stag, does not know where Mabon is, but leads the knights to an animal still older, the Eagle of Gwernabwy (Ford, p. 104)." In Britain, Iron Age Celts dwelt in small farmsteads with extended families and clan groups living together in nucleated hamlets with their privately owned land adjacent to the homestead. Silently comes the Barge, gliding over the waters, coming close to the shingle, calling us aboard it, and we sit down inside it… It’s empty. No one can row in our stead. Our Journey proceeds from us alone, and sitting down aboard the barge is not enough to begin to voyage, because we can’t let ourselves be led without leading our walk. If you don’t act, nothing can happen, and you keep still. Two oars are inside the barge, and we know it is up to us to ship the oars and to begin the Walk through the Waters, the magic Immram. The Barge moves away from the shore, gliding slowly away, and so the Journey begins. It is a Journey which takes up the whole of life and it has already started a long time ago, before the birth in this life, though we do not Remember. However it is taken up again each time, and if we do not remember the Journeys of yore, the lore dwells inside us, though often we are not aware of it and only when it arises by itself we realize it has taken root inside us, when we are in need of it." I am not a Christian, however for me, along with many, Mary is the archetypal mother. She further represents the Divine Feminine, while for some she is the feminine face of God. Mother Mary reminds me that even within the confines of patriarchy–and within traditions we may be ideologically opposed to–‘She’ is present. The road curves up and out of the Scottish town of St. Andrews, leaving the harbor below to the left. A small, unobtrusive sign appears on the right, pointing down a narrow lane. I first read about it in the Gwyl Mair 2011 issue in an article by Ashley Michael. She made hers in an Altoid Tin and it really intrigued me. I have made sculptural boxes and books over the years and love the clearly defined space as a structural element. I had to make one myself! Then I realized that not only did I have to make one, but my hearth should join in the fun. We had just finished discussing sacred space and what is more sacred than your own altar and how wonderful would it be to have transportable sacred space? They loved the idea and we embarked on the journey to make our own personal altar boxes. I have been chronicling our process in the last several issues of the Tor Stone.
