Beachcombing nowadays includes beach cleaning. Or at least should, and does for me. I've always been a beachcomber, from a very young age, collecting tiny fragments of the oceans gifts brought to shore on the tide. Looking down as you walk means you see some beautiful treasures. I once found a strange object that was later identified (by a museum, pre internet )as a fish swim bladder. It had pride of place in our childhood home museum. But now, tiny treasures from the ocean include plastics seen here with natural bone & shell pieces that jostle for room on tidelines across the world . I'm going to try melding these pieces into something. I'm seeing tiny rivets & metal combined with these. We'll see. Then maybe a beachcombing workshop could be born! The results are in! At this year’s Hirepool Big Clean in the gorgeous Hawke’s Bay 283 volunteers removed a staggering 16,950 litres of litter, weighing 2.2 tonnes! 👏👏👏 Everyone was so keen as they dispersed along 6 kilometres of coastline. There was a great vibe, and meaningful discussion around how the litter got there in the first place. With the first drops of rain starting just as we closed the last trailer up, we felt like Papatuānuku was on our side too. A magic Autumn day in SEQ! So nice to run in the cooling weather. Ive been consistently running three times a week and can feel my fitness improving each week. Its such a relief because I was pretty worried long covid would hang around! I also consistently take three for the sea (pick up up plastic) and although it seems futile I think it does make a difference in the places that I run. Why do we measure our litter in litres? 🤔 It’s to do with the tools we use at the beach: our big rubbish bags! One bag holds 50 litres, so for our team, counting how many bags our volunteers fill (giving us the volume) is the easiest way to directly measure the amount of litter we find. Fun fact: we worked out that around $100 enables us to remove a 50-litre sack of rubbish from the coastline. I‘m on an island. From my apartment to the beach it’s only 100 metres. Every day I walk there and have a swim before 8am. You can see some of my finds. It’s much easier however to find plastic. The little treasures in the left took me days. The miscellaneous in the right took me 30 minutes with occasional breaks. Take three for the sea.
