I’ve been no stranger to embracing my shadow over the years, allowing my darkness to take stage. I’ve found that it was much more of a defence mechanism, an armour that I adorned in order to survive the construction industry & the various chapters of my life that needed to feel secure & safe. It was my darkness that kept me warm at night. It has been this past year that I found ‘someone’ else within the depths, someone much more delicate, like fine lace, beautiful within her own being, yet full of ‘holes’ to make her whole. As the light emanates from within & I process the quantum leap and codes that the Auroras brought in, the shadows play out upon the walls of the cave as a delicate tapestry of art. In this dream I had, where I traveled to different worlds made by spiders, some worlds were new, and the spiders were waiting for humans to inhabit them, some, the humans had just left and the world was in the process of going back to nature. Some worlds had humans living in them. I remember the last world I visited before I finally woke…I was waiting in a glass house processing area. There was a friendly lady behind a large desk processing my papers and I could see the world beyond the glass. It was lush and green and there were children playing with ribbons and running around laughing. In the corner of the glass house was a large spider. I approached the spider and the woman behind the desk (who had obviously seen me getting up off my seat) said “that’s the spider that made our world”. A spider that created such a beautiful smiley-children laughing world must be friendly right? So I stuck out my finger to give it a little pet and the lady behind the counter screamed “STOOOP! It’s deadly poisonous!”. Jumping back I asked her why they would still keep the spider around if it was so deathly poisonous. And she replied, “the spider gave us life!” And I woke up… In indigenous cultures around the world, spiders hold significant spiritual symbolism, often representing wisdom, creativity, and connection to the natural world. I laughed out loud when I pulled this card for myself today. I have been reading a book about the divine feminine and the world soul the last few days and there have been a few web, matrix, weaving references that immediately brought forward the image of a spider in my mind's eye. And earlier today before my daughter went to school, I was outside on the deck (freezing my behind off btw!) enjoying my morning coffee and she came out to show me a spider she removed off the wall in the bathroom to let it go outside. From Wikipedia: “In some Native American and First Nations cultures, a dreamcatcher (Ojibwe: asabikeshiinh, the inanimate form of the word for ‘spider’) is a handmade willow hoop, on which is woven a net or web. It may also be decorated with sacred items such as certain feathers or beads. Traditionally, dreamcatchers are hung over a cradle or bed as protection. It originates in Anishinaabe culture as “the spider web charm” – asubakacin ‘net-like’ (White Earth Nation); bwaajige ngwaagan ‘dream snare’ (Curve Lake First Nation) – a hoop with woven string or sinew meant to replicate a spider’s web, used as a protective charm for infants. Dream catchers were adopted in the Pan-Indian Movement of the 1960s and 1970s and gained popularity as widely marketed “Native crafts items” in the 1980s.” Firstly, I want to acknowledge the First Nations People of Ojibwe, where these medicine tools originated. Spider is my power animal, and when I did my Four Seasons Journey with the The School of Shamanic Womancraft, my power object that I made for the closing gathering was a dream catcher. Then in my second year apprenticing, during the Wilderness Solo / Vision Quest - I made 14 dreamcatchers for the women out on solo. The colours, beads, weaving just came through me. Life is difficult at times, but there’s always little glimmers to be found. The Universe has been throwing spiders at me lately 😂 If you don’t know, I’m working through my fear of spiders. I can admire the lil guys now, but anything bigger than a 20 cent piece? 😬😬😬 So it’s always a big “HEY, PAY ATTENTION” when Spirit sends a spider. Whenever I wonder if I’m doing the right thing, BAM! I love to craft, and I particularly love to craft sacred tools. It was my pleasure to learn how to create a dream catcher, where each knot was a beautiful meditative practice, and each bead and feather was chosen with great intention. Dream catchers originated within the indigenous cultures of Native America, firstly with the Ojibwe tribe. There are several myths and stories which explain the importance of this spiritual tool, each featuring a spider. In one myth, it was the job of Asibikaashi - spider woman - to take care of the people. She wove webs over the children as they slept to trap any harmful dreams or spirits, and these webs would vanish at dawn as she brought the sun back. As the Ojibwe began to migrate further across America, the task became very difficult for Asibikaashi, and so she taught the mothers and grandmothers to weave dream catchers which would do the same job. The web would ensnare any nightmares or harm, protecting the child, and the small hole in the middle would allow the good dreams to escape, travel down the feathers, and into the mind of the child. The dream catchers were hung over the beds of infants; this was documented by explorers in their records when they visited the tribe a hundred years ago. It was thought that this would protect them from harm, evil spirits, and bad dreams. I have a dream catcher made by the indigenous people, bought at a trading post when I visited America a long time ago - it takes pride of place above my bed. But one of the reasons I was pleased to make my own was that my children suffer from nightmares, and they wanted a dream catcher to catch their bad dreams. The hoops - which represent the sun, the earth, and oneness - had already been spun with ribbons of their choosing. They have diligently been collecting sacred pigeon feathers over the past year, but I did not know how to make the spiders web!
