From my new ‘Astrology 101’ series: 👇 I’ve started a series of posts about foundational astrological concepts and decided to begin with the Ascendant, also referred to as the ‘Rising Sign.’ The Ascendant refers to the zodiac sign that was located on the eastern horizon at the exact time you were born. Just like the sun rises in the east each morning and moves across the sky before setting in the west (as viewed from our perspective on Earth), the signs are constantly circling around the sky. Each sign occupies the ‘rising’ position for approximately 2 hours a day. When you look at a birth chart, the Ascendant is the starting point of the chart, and provides the anchor point for the rest of the 12 houses of the chart to unfold. Symbolically, this makes sense, as we associate the sunrise with the beginning of a new day. In the case of a birth chart, it’s the beginning of a new life. Because the Ascendant changes so quickly, it is important to have an accurate birth time to provide the fullest interpretation of the birth chart. So what does your rising sign mean? It is the cusp of the first house, which is associated with our self – our physical body, our identity, and our awareness as a unique individual. So one interpretation of the Ascendant is that it’s the first impression we give off, or how we appear on the surface. Some say it’s like a filter, the lens through which everything else inside of us – all the rest of the planets in our chart – get out. And that’s true. But it’s more than that. When you think of the concept of a filter, part of its role is filtering what gets out, but it also filters what gets in. And that is the dual role of the Ascendant. It’s how we appear, but it’s also how we take in the outside world and assimilate it into ourselves, how we make sense of what is beyond us – like a scout venturing out into the wild and bringing information back to the village. In this case, the village is the rest of the planets in our chart. The Ascendant is a bridge - it's the moment when we pass between the womb and the world, where we are seen, and see, for the first time. And we carry that imprint with us for the rest of our lives.

Happy Mother's Day to all of those who stuck around and are in their children's lives, to the ones becoming parents, to the ones who are pet owners, etc. For me, the mother-daughter relationship was a rough one for me growing up. She was a narcissist to which I forgave her and had to heal that wound. By looking at things from an astrological point of view these days, everything made more sense reflecting back to that time frame in my life. In astrology, the fourth house is commonly referred to as the house of home. It is where our ancestry, roots and heritage are focused upon and can be thought of as the house of the mother, the parent or the nurturer. Having my Chiron (the wound healer) in the 4th house explains why that relationship was wounded. Then, there's the asteroid Ceres which carries strong feminine energy and named after the Roman equivalent of Demeter, the mother of Persephone. Ceres has to do with your relationship to your own parents and being your own parent to yourself. With the story of Persephone's abduction, Ceres also deals with the themes of grief, loss, the painful side of love and emotional attachment. Something I've learned having this asteroid in the sign of Sagittarius in my chart, you don't feel fully loved if someone tries to hold you in a cage. I felt caged at times in my childhood. Ceres in Sagittarius likes intellectual stimulation. It's the thinker and needs someone to ignite their passion for exploring. At times we are brought to our knees, cracked open.✨ Though this is an opportunity for growth, for healing, and to choose a different path. And to discover the gold that’s hidden beneath the surface. I used to resist these moments, and run for the hills! Avoiding those uncomfortable emotions that were lurking in the dark. The shame, the fear, the panic, the anxiety, the overwhelm that needed to be felt to be alchemized and released. I wanted to think my way out of things, though we all know we’ve got to feel things to heal. Even though the human mind loves to keep busy. These were dominant emotions that were running my life until recently. I realised this week that my old friend ‘shame’ had reared it’s head again. (If you missed it - I’m leaving my part time job next week because it’s draining me and doesn’t feel aligned anymore.) I feel deep relief, trust and excitement for the next chapter! Though I also feel anxiety and deep shame. And that’s ok, it’s all ok. The old me would have kept busy, (oh yes the Capricorn part of me will sometimes lead me to burnout).😂 Though I made a different choice in that moment, I decided to surrender and feel it all. I sat with the shame, feeling the sensation of my clenched, tense stomach and listened to what it wanted to say. I felt shame because I haven’t created enough finances to support myself since I started my business in 2019, and have had multiple part time jobs alongside. I felt shame about the times I’ve undervalued my soul work and not fully believed in myself. I felt anxious about ‘how’ the money will come now. Afterwards I felt more spacious and relaxed within. All your emotions are valid and have hidden wisdom for you if you are willing to delve deeper. Your shame, or whatever difficult emotions you are feeling do not define you. Cut yourself some slack cos you’re only human! 😂 Albert Einstein once said: “You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.” You get to choose in each moment to surrender and be guided by love. Ohhh the journey… I received quite a powerful reading the other day. I’d love to elaborate, however, it’s a deeply personal one. I talked with my community this morning about how to think about this new moon 🌚 . It’s such a fertile one! 🌱 Find 18° of Taurus ♉️ in your natal chart. That’s where the new beginnings are happening. That’s the very short version. 🙃 We’re planting seeds, Taurus ♉️style. We can REALLY lean into Taurus and use this stable, value- focused, committed, and dedicated energy to create some long, lasting things that are important to us in our lives…. It’s a good time to work on foundational stuff. Maybe I’ll do a reel later, sharing a little bit more.
