MAY THE FOREST BE WITH YOU! It’s Star Wars Day and a perfect time to share the story of our trail mascot, Yoda. We found Yoda 14 years ago on our first thru-hike of the Trans-Catalina Trail. We were up on the ridge heading towards Parsons Landing, and found a little plastic Yoda toy discarded on the trail. We picked Yoda up, dusted him off, and he’s been adventuring with us ever since. He’s hiked many of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge Series, including SoCal, San Diego, Bay Area, Arizona Winter, Oregon, PNW and New England. He’s backpacked the Lost Coast Trail, and explored Arches National Park. He’s hiked the entire Theodore Solomons Trail, and thru-hiked the Coast-to-Coast Walk across England. So join us on Sunday April 21st at 9 am for a beautiful 10 mile loop around Zuma. We will NOT be doing the hike all the way up the canyon as described on the site, while this is a lot of fun it’s pretty advanced on a good day but with all the rain it’s too washed out to be practical. So the rim route is slightly longer, loaded with wildflowers and also a lot of fun. Coffee’s cool, but have you ever taken a first date on a hike through a landfill? 🚮 Okay, more like a former landfill. Hike No. 33 of the LA Trailblazer Challenge (made up by me, but I am open to catchier alternatives) brought me to Griffith Park. Last year, I did the 10 Peaks Challenge across Griffith and it was a lot harder than I expected. Like, a lot. I’m talking Class 2/3 rock scrambling and bushwhacking (Right in the heart of LA, no less). But the experience got me curious and itching to learn more about the park’s history and cultural significance, one trail at a time. The Toyon Trail is a 3-mile loop that winds around the defunct Toyon Canyon Landfill. It’s not well hidden, either. You can easily see it from several major freeways in the San Fernando Valley. The landfill operated from 1957 to 1985 before being decommissioned and filled in 2008. Over 16,000,000 tons of waste entered the landfill. Today, you can take a stroll and see a variety of native plants growing along the rim of the landfill like toyon, oak, California poppy, and lupine; a cool juxtaposition of industrial history and ecological renewal. While Big Red went to the shop to get the hitch installed, Shawn and I went to Casper’s for a 7.6-mile hike. Everything was very lush and green, and the creeks were all flowing. Embrace the ridiculousness Climbing Mount St Helen's on Mother's Day weekend is a Pacific Northwest Tradition. Nearly everyone who climbs Mount St. Helens on Mother's Day is in a dress. Men, women, children, dogs (leashed, of course) - outdoor enthusiasts definitely embrace the spirit. The tradition is somewhat ridiculous, but embraced by many, including yours truly. I am starting a new tradition here in Southern California coz the permit is hard to come by in St Helens, and the logistics is a bit tricky and expensive coming from Southern California. We don't hike as a one big group. You hike with your own group of friends. All are invited - this will be the only time your male friends, husbands, sons are invited (as part of an Adventure Sisters event), but they MUST wear a dress. Dogs are always welcome.
