Well, we didn’t make it to Drake’s Bay this weekend due to unpleasant wind and seas outside the gate. But we still poked our nose out there and almost made it to the sea buoy. The crew wasn’t having a good time though, all of which were sick to vary extents. Seas were rough with winds gusting up to 30 knots and rollers of 10-12 ft every 20 ft. We buried the now a few times. Once we re-entered the gate, however, the bay was gorgeous. We anchored out a couple of nights on the north western side and had a pleasant outing. The morning were amazing… something about being at anchor and waking up to the peace and quiet of the wildlife around you… it’s surreal. Lots of porpoises and even a gray whale sighting this weekend. #itsasailorslifeforme #SelkiesSong #sfbaysailing

Sunday, April 28 is Opening Day on the Bay - the official start of sailing high season on San Francisco Bay! From the CYC Blessing of the Fleet in Raccoon Strait to the PICYA parade of decorated boats, Opening Day on the Bay is one of the premier sailing events of the year. Members can participate by chartering a boat or joining a Club Sail out of either our Sausalito or Berkeley locations. For non-members, we also have an Introductory Sail out of Sausalito. Dating back to 1917 and organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association, the Opening Day parade sails from the shadows of the Golden Gate Bridge to just past Pier 39. Any vessels, including Modern Sailing charter boats, can join the parade as long as they register beforehand. The procession regularly features tug boats, clean-up boats, tour boats, and of course sailboats, with local boaters, visitors, and spectators onboard. Judges are on hand to dish out prizes for the décor and imagination of the colorful vessels. The parade begins at noon. All vessels are welcome to join the Blessing of the Fleet in Raccoon Strait, which begins at 10:30am. No registration is required to participate! Are you looking for a route to level up your racing game by joining a cohesive crew on a highly competitive one-design racing yacht? You've found it! Step up to Tier 2 of our three-tiered Racing Program, Club Race Teams! The BYC Friday Night Beer Can Racing Series and the SYC Spring and Summer Sunset Racing Series Club Race Teams are open for enrollment now! These teams provide an opportunity for sailors with prior racing experience to go beyond the basics to gain proficiency in boat and sail handling on a J/105, the Bay Area’s most competitive one design race boat. Completion of the Racing Clinic and Asymmetrical Spinnaker Clinic and previous racing experience are required to participate. The BYC Friday Night Beer Can Races run from March 15 to September 27. We have divided the whole season into smaller "series" of five races each. Race days will build on skills practiced in previous races, so participants will be required to enroll in and attend all races in their chosen series. These Race Teams are led by a Club Race Skipper rather than an instructor race coach. The SYC Spring Sunset Series runs every second Thursday evening from May 2 to June 13. The SYC Summer Sunset Series runs from July 18 to August 29. Each racing day will build on skills practiced in previous races, so participants will be required to enroll in and attend all races in the series. Inspired by Bertrand Delhom, a sailor with Parkinson's Disease who is crewing aboard Neptune in the Ocean Globe Race, Modern Sailing member Amy Bridge is helping to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's research. Amy tells us, "I met Bertrand, who I came to learn had a lifelong dream, as a sailor to sail around the world. Now, he was going to attempt the challenge in spite of his PD diagnosis and associated issues. We connected through a shared love for sailing, and as human beings. I felt immediate empathy for Bertrand, and respect for Tann and all those engaged. I felt compelled to engage from home in some way - to support them, travel to see them off last September, and follow the adventure." When the tides come in - Jan 20, 24 @WalkSanFrancisco . I thought this was a fascinating sight from Treasure Island. A lone sailboat, braving the challenging tides of San Francisco Bay, carved a path through a unique tide channel. On either side, rough waters churned, but this brilliantly captained vessel found its rhythm, slicing through a ribbon of calm. . I learned to watch for tides in San Francisco Bay after meeting a local on my first walk around Treasure Island in March of 2019. He pointed out the sudsy looking high tide borderline that stretched across San Francisco Bay in a very irregular but contiguous line. . I met @Azhar.aitkozha on that hike when she and her husband lived on Treasure Island and before she became a mommy of two. Thanks for following me all this time!
