18ft Skiffs: The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines One of the real highlights of the Australian 18 Footer League’s 2023-24 Sydney Harbour season was the outstanding performance of the young, rookie team on The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines from the opening Spring Championship series in October until the JJ Giltinan Championship in March. Skippered by the then 16-year-old The Scots College student Jacob Marks, with former skipper Alex Marinelli on the sheet and Matt Doyle in the bow, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines won the six-race Spring Championship series by one point from John Winning’s Yandoo with Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) a further two points back. In the JJ Giltinan (World) Championship, competing in a 27-boat fleet of experienced teams from five countries, the young team finished 12th after recording seven top-10 placings in the nine-race regatta. In the final race of the championship, the team actually led the fleet to within 100 metres of the weather mark after the long North-East leg from Clark Island to the Beashel Buoy. This is a young team with obvious talent and, given the right opportunity, will have a good future in the class and be a top performer in the Australian 18 Footers League’s fleet on Sydney Harbour. Alex Marinelli, the driving force behind the establishing and management of The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines team, got into the 18s in the 2020-21 season, and recalls: “I was on the sheet with Tom Cunich and Flynn Twomey, sailing Vintec. Over the next two seasons I ended up driving, firstly on the Appliancesonline with Darcy McKracken and Tyler Creevey, then getting The Royal Oak the following season with Darcy and Matt Doyle" “By the end of the 2022-23 season I got a bit tired of steering, so during the off season I thought I should find a big skipper and I could hop on the sheet. Solo sailor Lisa Blair is on the home straight of her newest sailing record, briefly accompanied by intrigued Orcas after she rounded the southern tip of New Zealand off Stewart Island and is now crossing Cook Strait to the North Island and entering the potentially most treacherous leg of her Auckland to Auckland record attempt. The Australian sailor battled through sleep deprivation in five to six metre swells as she round South West Cape, with 35 to 45 knots of wind. She has dodged fishing vessels and huge waves shoving her vessel Climate Action Now around before relatively calmer conditions up the east coast of the South Island where the killer whales joined her journey. “The sleep deprivation has been tough and that gale off Stewart Island was a rocky and risky ride, not even the many fishing boats were out in that storm,” Lisa said. As she crosses Cook Strait and enters day 13 of the non-stop solo and unassisted voyage aiming to set a new world record route, Lisa will forgo precious sleep periods due to the increased ocean traffic and need for visual outlook. Lisa crossed the start line at 0757 (NZST) Tuesday 7th May to embark on an Auckland to Auckland, around New Zealand, sailing record over more than 2,200 nm on a rhumb line. Groupe Atlantic wins Act 1 of the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup Torbole (Garda Lake) - After six days of great sailing, Groupe Atlantic is the winner of the Act 1 of the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup, event hosted and organized by Circolo Vela Torbole; the event was characterized by the normal alternation between Peler (northerly wind) and Ora (southerly wind), which almost always blew in double digits, allowing almost all of the races to be completed in foiling conditions. Starting in the wake of L'Oréal Orient Express Racing Team led by Enzo Balanger, first leader of the long regatta series, Clement Cron's team emerged steaily, overtaking L'Oréal just at the end and defending the lead during the final day. The clash between the two crews, the most experienced in the fleet, was fierce and saw the two competitors face each other without reservations in an exciting and technically clean duel, with both finishing with only a limited number of penalities. But no one received fewer penalties than Zachary Blomeley's Oceana Vivo, that finished in third position and won the Fair Play Trophy, traditionally assigned to the crew who, during a single event, sails with less penalties than the others. Le Havre, Normandy, France (Sunday 19 May) – Racing continued into the early evening of Day 3 of the Normandy Match Cup as the semi-finals got underway in a fresh 12-15knots, combined with a challenging current off the Le Havre beach. The semi-final pairings of Pauline Courtois (FRA) v Julia Aartsen (NED), and Megan Thomson (NZL) v Kenza Coutard (FRA) each finished their matches levelled at 1-1 in some of the closest racing of the event. The day started late with a wait ashore for the breeze to fill. As the teams headed to the course in the afternoon, the quarter-finals were completed with New Zealand’s Thomson defeating Denmark’s Kristine Mauritzen 3-0, France’s Kenza Coutard defeating Julia D’Amodio 3-1, and the Netherlands’ Julia Aartsen taking five matches to defeat Australia’s Brooke Wilson 3-2 and secure her spot in the semis. As the breeze freshened, the semi-final pairings of Courtois (FRA) v Aartsen (NED), and Thomson (NZL) v Coutard (FRA) readied for battle amidst multiple penalties in both matches. Having to contend with the shifting breeze and a complicated current, defending Normandy Match Cup champion Courtois and her Match in Pink team secured the first match win over Aartsen. Undeterred, Aartsen and crew were determined in the second match, leading the start and the race before making an error hoisting their genoa at the final top-wind mark. Courtois saw the opportunity and passed Aartsen with a straight line run to the finish. There have been times over the past week when others rose up to challenge the riders from Singapore and France, but in the end Maeder and Nolot were just too good for the opposition. The biggest drama of the final day came in the men’s competition, in Semi Final A. With three French competitors ahead of her in the standings, Whitehead also achieved the position of third nation and with it a significant boost in confidence for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, which is limited to one entry per nation. The week of intense competition featured a range of conditions that challenged the 125 competitors from 36 nations. Whitehead advanced to the semi-finals in fifth place but was beaten by French rider Jessie Kampman for a spot in the top four final. Reflecting on the competition, Whitehead said, “We had a great range and really nice conditions. The sun was out after the first day and turned on some glamour conditions towards the end of the week. The girls were pushing so hard all week and it was amazing to get to test out my performance on the whole range of kites (minus the 9m).” Looking ahead, Whitehead is planning to take a short break to recharge before resuming her preparations for the Olympics. “Next steps are to have a bit of time off. I’ve had a packed start to the year, and a little break is much needed to recharge and focus before the Games. Then it’s to Marseille and getting prepared for the Olympics,” she stated. In stunning sailing conditions, the Pallas Capital Gold Cup concluded from the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club today, with David Doherty’s Matador reinforcing their position at the top of the leaderboard to take Act 4 on both TPR and IRC, and to win the Pallas Capital Gold Cup overall. The minor placings on TPR were too tight to call on the water. Craig Neil’s Quest finished strongly to take second over Sebastian Bohm’s Smuggler. On IRC, Zen, owned and skippered by Gordon Ketelbey took second, with Quest in third. “Yeah we’re pretty happy, pretty proud,” said David Doherty. “Before the season we were nervous that we wouldn’t get to where we have, but it's a good group of guys and girls and we just make it happen. We've been able to dig out of trouble. That's the best thing about the boat and team, we can just get back out of trouble,” Doherty said, summing up their series. On their consistency in this year’s results, Doherty focussed on where he sees room for improvement. “Last round we struggled a little and this time we struggled with our starts, but we will work on that and get better. “I don't know, I guess we will go again but who knows it seems like the fleet just gets stronger and stronger so it'll get harder as it gets more and more competitive,” Doherty finished, looking to the 2025 series. Worrell 1000 Legs 5 & 6 On Thursday morning, May 16th - Teams lined up on the beach in Jacksonville, Florida, ready to set sail on the longest leg of the event: JAX Beach to Tybee Island, GA - 120 miles. The forecast looked grim; Light, southerly breezes under bright, relentless, full sun ALL DAY. This leg would prove to be not only a physical & strategical challenge, but one of mental endurance as well. Winds for the day were forecast to be light; 5-10 knots, with little chance of building. The wind direction would prove to be of a particular challenge: Throughout the entire leg, there was a mix of BOTH on and off shore breezes that seemed to be converging into a “tunnel” along the rhumb line, and as the day progressed, the tracker showed teams taking a multitude of strategies; some took huge flyers, going far offshore while others played the rhumb line - with the remaining teams hugging the shore the entire leg. At the end of the day, those who played very close to the rhumb made out the best; but in the end, all would try to converge west of that line with the exception of Rudy’s (Randy Smyth and Dalton Tebow) who would finish 6th after taking the longest flyer far east of it and gybing to the finish (well after dark) in a sharp east/southeast point of sail. No one would finish in daylight - The first place finisher, Team Australia 1 (Brett Burville & Max Putman) would glide to the finish at 10:40pm - The last? Team Meerkat at 1:44am. As the lay-day for the event changed to Folly Beach this year, all teams needed to be on the line and ready to go at 10am for the 6th leg to Folly. Tired and restless, teams faced a mercifully shorter leg; just 65-ish miles under full overcast skies. The wind? 8-10 knots from the southeast - PERFECT conditions for a spin reach that saw all teams sail straight up the shore with little gybing to speak off. The finale of the Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup started in sporty conditions with sensational racing from all eleven entrants, with reports of over 25 knots of boat speed, in a blustery southerly at times blowing over 30 knots on Pittwater. David Doherty’s Matador took all three wins on TPR to lead that series overall, the first race was a dead heat on IRC between Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan and Matador, with Matador taking the remaining two races of the day. Craig Neil’s Quest is in second on TPR, with Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Men’s Business (SMB) in third. “It was an awesome day”, said Craig Neil, who is also the TP52 Australia Class President. “It was so good. There was a lot of breeze and we had some amazing rides on beautiful Pittwater. Nice flattish water but really lots of gusts and I think we saw nearly 33 knots at one point, our boat speed hit 26 knots on most of the runs so it was pretty good and exciting in a small course. It's just so competitive,” he exclaimed. The Transgender Participation Policy will apply to all World Sailing events – including World Sailing Championships, the Youth Sailing World Championships, and the world or continental championships of the Olympic Classes – and the Olympic Games, including qualifying competitions, and will come into effect from January 1st, 2025. It was developed following a consultation process including a survey of World Sailing stakeholders and the establishment of a working group made up of representatives from national federations, World Sailing Classes, the World Sailing Medical Commission, and athletes who are transgender female, cisgender female, and non-binary. In addition, World Sailing sought medical expertise from other international federations including World Athletics and the International Cycling Union (UCI). GSC Route for 2027-2028 https://www.mysailing.com.au/gsc-route-for-2027-2028 By Marco Nannini / Global Solo Challenge (https://globalsolochallenge.com/?utm_source=mysailing&utm_medium=news) Louis Robein, the last competitor still at sea in the Global Solo Challenge 2023-2024, has reached the latitude of Rio De Janeiro but most notably, today, has crossed the Tropic of Capricorn. The cold temperatures of the deep South are finally well behind him and, milestone after milestone, A Coruna must start to appear within reach for the formidable French skipper. The journey to the finish will be paced by milestones such as the crossing of the equator and getting back in the northern hemisphere, sailing north in the tradewinds to the Tropic of Cancer, negotiating the Azores’ high pressure and finally heading east towards the Iberian Peninsula. This year’s spring seems to have given us more rain and cold temperatures than usual but by the time Louis will cross the finish line summer will have arrived giving him a more manageable route to the finish than some of his fellow competitors who had to dodge winter storms right till the finish line. Whilst Louis gently closes in towards the finish line, there is plenty of activity in the background. Over 70 skippers have already registered their interest in the Global Solo Challenge 2027-2028 with 5 having already taken the step to formally enter, others will wait till their plans to participate will firm up, with many window shopping for a boat. Others are studying the regulations to understand what modifications will be required to comply with the safety framework of the Event.
