Are you looking for a route to level up your racing game by joining a cohesive crew on a highly competitive one-design racing yacht? You've found it! Step up to Tier 2 of our three-tiered Racing Program, Club Race Teams! The BYC Friday Night Beer Can Racing Series and the SYC Spring and Summer Sunset Racing Series Club Race Teams are open for enrollment now! These teams provide an opportunity for sailors with prior racing experience to go beyond the basics to gain proficiency in boat and sail handling on a J/105, the Bay Area’s most competitive one design race boat. Completion of the Racing Clinic and Asymmetrical Spinnaker Clinic and previous racing experience are required to participate. The BYC Friday Night Beer Can Races run from March 15 to September 27. We have divided the whole season into smaller "series" of five races each. Race days will build on skills practiced in previous races, so participants will be required to enroll in and attend all races in their chosen series. These Race Teams are led by a Club Race Skipper rather than an instructor race coach. The SYC Spring Sunset Series runs every second Thursday evening from May 2 to June 13. The SYC Summer Sunset Series runs from July 18 to August 29. Carmen has been teaching ASA courses with us for a few months now, and is coaching a Modern race team for the first time in tonight's BYC Beer Can Race. Meet Captain James Jenkins, one of Modern Sailing's outstanding sailing instructors. James’ sailing experience began at a New York high school that specialized in oceanography. He developed a thirst and love for the ocean and watersports when he joined his school’s boating club. After moving to California in the early 2000s, he gained even more sailing experience at the Lake Merritt Boating center in Oakland, at OCSC, and several other sailing clubs. In 2014, he acquired his Captain’s License. James’ appreciation for sailing was further realized after sailing in other regions including Asia, Europe, Central America, and the South Pacific. Over the years, he has engaged in activities that have furthered his and other people’s experience, including, but not limited to: - Participation in multiple racing events, including the Master Mariners’ Regatta as a volunteer with the Pegasus Project for a number of years, which invites youths with an opportunity to sail the bay. - Currently serves as the Chairman of the Oakland Boating Advisory Council at the Lake Merritt Boating center in Oakland. James holds a USCG 100-Ton Captain’s License and has sailed both inland and along the western coast shore of the USA. His biggest future goal is to participate in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. At Modern Sailing, many of our instructors and team members are military veterans, including Captain Stan Lander, who served as a Coast Guard officer for 20 years. It's now been 20 years that Stan has been teaching at Modern Sailing. As our Head Instructor, Stan leads our USCG Captains License Courses and ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics. He also still enjoys teaching beginners at the ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing level and intermediate sailing courses and clinics, as well as coaching the occasional race. We thank Stan and all our veterans for their service to our country, and for their service to countless Modern students who have become outstanding sailors and even instructors because of them.
