Thinking about my father, David Masters, on this Memorial weekend. His father, also named David, was sailing the yellow-sailed catboat, third from the left, in the original 1929 photo of The Rainbow Fleet. This imagery became my father’s signature scrimshaw motif, allowing him to make his work truly stand out with the vibrant colors he added. Walrein. The walrus pokemon. In ruby and sapphire its family are encountered quite late in the game meaning that they never made it onto my squad. Competitivley, walrein is a brilliant staller, gaining the nickname stallrein. It is bulky and can heal with hail and ice body, leftovers or rest and has decent attack power. I hate facing walrein and have used it multiple times on my teams, with great success. These team aqua and magma cards look good but im not really digging the secret base aesthetic. Wholesome family business content here! When I'm looking for small pieces, I always go first to my dad's "scrap" bags that contain a variety of bits from his days in Newport. Mostly unfinished odds and ends, but this sweet signature was discovered today. He used a square scribe primarily, and would always make sure his scribe was at the correct angle before signing a piece, so this was just a test run. 🤯 This signature has always been the thing that inspires the perfectionist in me to get more and more detail in my scrimshaw work. It's a 2mm script signature for Pete's sake! But to make this even more special, this was scribed in 1984, the year I was born. Material & process appreciation post! Before I pick up the scribe, every piece of ivory is hand picked, cut, filed, and polished using mostly hand tools until it hits the buffing wheel. It is never taken lightly that the material I use belonged to one of the most majestic earthly beings, and that my/our ancestors snuffed out their light for us to have our own. In that spirit, aggressive tools and machines tend to clog my inspiration, removing the spirit of the art form originally done by sailors without the luxury of machinery. Of course, sometimes the fast paced economic demands require me to use a band saw or the grinding wheel, but it grinds my soul a bit to take that route. I consider it my duty & obligation to make as much beauty as possible, gently & quietly, with what is left of these incredible whales, and to not discard or abuse their memory. Ivory used in Gotauco Scrimshaw is guaranteed to be Pre-Act, and at minimum 125 years old. I made an agreement with myself, when I first decided to make my scrimshander title official, that I would not purchase ivory in order to turn a profit, and I maintain that agreement...a strange, but worthy, career choice. When the last piece of my family's marine ivory/bone is used, I may work on fossil or bone of an unregulated sort, or just scrim' customer owned ivory as it comes. Or, maybe, I will be able to retire on a boat somewhere and enjoy another medium (or not) while watching the whales where they should be. Until that day comes, I treasure every little part of the process, and hope that my mission, and my deep appreciation for the origin of scrimshaw, translates to everyone who encounters my work. Y'all, burn out is real, so check on your small arts business owner friends..... 🙃 Taking a moment to share this cool piece as I climb my way out of a social media hiatus! The featured tooth is a replica (fakeshaw/Fauxshaw) of a Starbuck tooth. The original work of art would, I'm sure, vibrate with the energy of the rumbling seas, and few will have the honor of touching it, along with the other museum items locked within glass cases. This is exactly what I love about the reproduction scrim' that has woefully been judged by many, including myself, to somehow be less worthy of conversation. Were it not for the reproduction of teeth like this, we would not ordinarily be able to get such a close look at the visual poetry that is real, sailor made scrimshaw. I am absolutely in love with every scratch Starbuck left upon the whale's tooth, every odd line, the composition and fullness of the story. While I am here to create traditional scrimshaw on authentic antique marine by-products, I am also here to encourage people to embrace the awesome process & intrinsic value of Fauxshaw in the modern age. It's ok to want it, have it, and admire it as a part of your collection, and I'm thrilled to have this in mine! Thank you, Spouting Whale 🐳 ➡️ As noted before, Fauxshaw has been given a bad rap mostly due to a lack of transparency. So in an effort to educate folks interested in collecting scrimshaw, who may run into something at an estate sale or flea market, see the last pic for a telltale sign that a tooth is not real: the cut end with clear saw marks. A genuine whale tooth will never look like this. If a real tooth has been cut or filed, you will likely see both enamel & dentin, and if it has grain it will run vertically up the root.
