Stompin' at the Savoy – Rufus & Chaka Khan Released: 1983 Label: Warner Bros. Standout Tracks: "You Got the Love", "Once You Get Started", "Tell Me Something Good", "Stop on By", "I'm a Woman (I'm a Backbone)", "Stay", "Do You Love What You Feel", "Ain't Nobody" Stompin' at the Savoy is a double LP live album by Rufus & Chaka Khan. The album is essentially a reunion for Rufus and Chaka Khan, as Khan had been in and out of the group since starting her solo career in 1978. Stompin' at the Savoy is a last hurrah for Rufus, being the last album the group released before their dissolution later the same year. The first three sides of the album are devoted to live performances by Rufus and Khan at the eponymous Savoy in New York City from February 12th–14th, where the group essentially runs through their greatest hits in a spectacular fashion. The last side of the album consists of four new Khan-led studio tracks: "Ain't Nobody", "One Million Kisses", "Try a Little Understanding", and "Don't Go to Strangers". The concerts were also filmed by Warner Bros. with the intent of releasing a documentary alongside the album. Breakin’ Soundtrack - Various Artists (1984) This one is more about the vibe than the music on this soundtrack. For me the music doesn’t hold up, with the exception of “Ain’t Nobody” by Rufus and Chaka Khan. That still gets played in the wild from time to time. The last track is Ice-T’s debut on an LP. It is really the only track that features rap. The rest is the dance music associated with breakdancing in 83-84, which was more poppy and synth heavy than the hip hop that came before and after that period. The absence of rapping in this brief period of breakdancing is surprising when I look back on it because it feels like a false memory. But, again, this is more about the vibe for me. I remember going to see the movie in the theater with my friend Mark, and it was at the height of my brief obsession with break dancing. I specialized in toprock and freezes, and my brother had the idea to steal our dad’s plexiglass office chair mat to replace the cardboard we used to practice backspins and windmills with the neighborhood crew. This was short lived but very meaningful at the time. Our school district even had a breakdancing summer school class. This was all in the East Bay suburb of Orinda, so for something that started in New York and flourished in LA where the movie takes place was kind of remarkable because it happened relatively quickly and intensely without the benefit of social media. . . . . While I was born in the 70’s, it was the 80’s when I became music obsessed as a pre-teen and teen. Records - W 2880 ‘Ain’t Nobody’ was originally released in 1982 - the year that Rufus and Chaka Khan split up after 12 years. This version, remixed by Frankie Knuckles, was released by Chaka Khan during her successful solo career. In my opinion, the original is far, far better. And more interesting. For example, the amazing, memorable, famous synth line that the song starts with was actually sequenced by an LM-1 - the original Linn Drum, one of the first drum machines. AND, Roger Linn was auditioned and accepted to be the guitarist for the touring band, but turned it down because the pay wasn’t enough!! (I’ve used the audio from the original, ‘cos it’s so great!)
